It's a social contract, people keep a government going so that the government can keep them going when the **** hits the fan. It's horribly socialist but kind of nice.
I think what @Dennisch was getting at was that people are getting money even if they haven't lost anything. For me 2020 was a good year financially, I shouldn't be eligible for anything.

There should be an option where people who do not want to receive the $2000, they can opt for a tax rebate.... it would still be the same thing in a way... everyone benefits...

For those of you with somehow a negative point of view of a government, correctly set up, it should exist to help the people. Period.
And such a stimulus during these time is the definition of help for the people...

Edit: just today the very least....

I don't quite know how US paperwork works for this and what practical matters you'd have to do to make it an actual rebate but I look at these stimulus cheques as functionally the same thing.

I've been paying US income taxes since the 60's and don't recall ever seeing a rebate. It may not be not the best term for this discussion. However, I've received refunds on several occasions, usually when I've overpaid or miscalculated. Last year I did receive a stimulus check, like money out of the blue. It was not taxable and I will pay no additional taxes because of it. At the time I simply deposited it and did not increase my spending. It was wasted on me at that time Now I am spending on a new hobby and have surely spent more than $1200 in the past two months.

@CTznOfTime
As well as providing for national defense, etc., the US Federal government is mandated to promote growth and reduce unemployment, but of course at the same time balance this against the deficit, debt and inflation. IMHO, these spasmodic little stimulus checks don't even begin to fix the problem. The Main Street economy has been crippled and is bleeding at the ears. We have to get past this pandemic and restore economic activity. If the pandemic turns out to be a permanent fact of life, and the economy remains in permanent lockdown, we will need something like a universal basic income. Such an idea may be a legislative/legal challenge, and anathema to our traditional system.

Joe Exotic!

Do you know who's to blame? That 🤬 Carole Baskin!

With regards to the pardons, I'm appalled that Trump pardoned Kwame Kilpatrick, the former Detroit mayor. I guess it was inevitable though since Kilpatrick was probably the most corrupt mayor Detroit has ever had (that's saying something too) so it only makes sense the most corrupt president pardons him.

It's so cold in the D!

Speaking of Michigan, it seems as if former governor Rick Snyder might finally get convicted for his role in the Flint water crisis. Seven years late, but it's about time.

I mean, it's called stimulus for a reason.

If you don't need it, spend it. Or if you're feeling really guilty about it, donate it.
Yeah it's not particularly hard to send my portion away to someone else who actually needs it, though the money still came from somewhere, so I'd prefer to just not be counted in the first place. On the larger scale though I'd expect that unless sorting out who is in need is very expensive, directing the funds to people who have faced hardship would likely get them more money.

Like his commutation of Rod Blagojevich's sentence, I get the impression someone simply whispered in his ear, "psst, this is a corrupt politician," and that's all he needed.

Imagine my surprise to see that Trump pardoned, of all people, Lil Wayne (busted for felony gun possession), Kodak Black (busted for lying on government paperwork while trying to purchase a gun ) and Michael "O-Harry" Harris (busted for Attempted Murder and attempted kidnapping), who helped fund Death Row Records from his jail cell.

The cynic in me is betting that Trump'll use these guys as en excuse if his claims of "doing more for the Black community since Abe Lincoln" comes under fire in the future.

More than anything, even as a hip-hop fan, I find these three to be rather...random choices. :boggled:

IMO, another bad legacy after a trump administration is the fact that he has lowered the civility level in our society and possibly in the world...

Seeing how he has been behaving in the Office, some people think that it gives them justification to behave the same way too everywhere else

trump is such a petty and shamelessly shameful individual...

he Draws the worst in all of us... Worse being ever.
Lock him up and punish him (financially)... He cannot go unaccountable... Shame his family forever.

I directly blame him for all of these instance and disruption...

Suge Knight is punching air right now.
If Trump were to let him out maybe he'll be hoping Suge runs into a few of Trump's former buddies on the outside.

With all these last minute pardons I'm compelled to wonder whether the old revolving door attack ad applies to Diamond Don (cartoon parody enclosed).

I can't help but think Trump blaming Biden for the state of America is like Sideshow Bob blaming Diamond Joe Quimby for letting him out of prison.

Hell yeah, ramparts! Rockets glaring! Air burst bombs! Hoorah! Liberty and justice for all! God damn I love America, y’all Brits have no idea what you’re missing.

I hate to say this, but the Trump experience has left a deep, dark stain on the reputation of the US that no amount of rockets glaring & bombs bursting is going to wash away. :indiff:

Listening to Joe speak after he has been sworn in, man I feel like my ears are being thoroughly cleaned...

My ears my ears... They can listen to good words, words and sentences that make sense and are in proper English...

No more lies and crap from an orange chicken butt hole...
