Any board gamers out there?

We've invested quite heavily into X-Wing miniatures and played around in the tournament scene. My son and I play quite regularly and enjoy the "building" your squadron and slapping em on the table.

I hadn't discovered the hobby in the SPI and Avalon Hill days but I'm fully onboard with GMT, Lock'N'load stuff etc.

Actually not. There's many cooperative games that can be solo'd and even solitaire games themselves.

Co ops are good to play solo and on the odd occasion you can get together with friends.

Also two player specific games are great with spouses.
I was thinking about the older games I use to play, except card games. All the other games needed more than one player.

This is an advantage of computer games. You can play these games alone.

The only problem with board games is that you have to have friends whom want to play with you.

Online board games in that case would be where it's at.

I'll have to look up if there are online versions of Seven Wonders

Playing a game that involved bluffing would seem soulless via a screen for me.

I think a board game "night" is the exact opposite of playing alone.

My wife was turning into a computer widow. No interest in any computer games at all.

I'd read about a cooperative board game called Pandemic and the idea of trying to beat a traditional board game intrigued me.

I ordered my wife a copy for Christmas and we played the heck out of it. Conversation flowed and I got my gaming fix whilst enjoying time with the wife.

Then the flood gates opened and we fell into the hobby hard.
As it happens it's now a golden time in the hobby and its growing. Not to the extent of computers but that's a well established medium.

Monopoly being ranked at 11000 on board game geek shows that there is quite a lot more out there.

This is why you play Monopoly Deal. Game ends wayyyy sooner since the goal is to own 3 property sets rather than making everyone go bankrupt.

Yup, I've played that and it was fun for a short quick game vs. the full on traditional Monopoly game.

I've played Pandemic with my friends who host boardgames nights. Fun game, and it was somewhat hard to win. I think most of the time we lost to the infection.

I may have burnt out on it a bit. There's a few expansions available to beef it up however there is also Pandemic Legacy which evolves as you play it.

Three other newer titles that scratch the Pandemic itch are

Dead men tell no tales.
Co op Pirate game whereby you need to board a burning ship to claim treasure and defeat the ghost captain. Players 1-5

Burgle Bros.
Co op heist game. The gang need to break into a three story building, crack the safe on each floor and escape via the helicopter on the roof.
Players 1-4

The Captain is dead.
Basically the last ten minutes of your favourite Sci-fi show. Warp drive needs to be repaired to enable the jump to warp speed (win).
Aliens are boarding, systems are failing and an alien ship is taking pot shots at your ship.
Players 1-7.

All these are a great alternative to Pandemic.
Captain is dead may suffer from repeated plays because the event deck can get predicable if it's played a lot. ( I tend to rotate games in play list). But that's a minor nitpic.

I'd love to get into more table top games, we play Uno and Monopoly sometimes if there's nothing else to do, it's great fun.

If I'm with my family, a couple more card games are thrown into the mix. Pontoon(Blackjack with slightly different rules) and 25(no idea if this is an international name :P) mostly.

Occasionally play a bit of Hold'em.

International Table top day was yesterday (yes it's a thing). Local gaming store hired out multiple function rooms and we gamed most of the day.

Came back with this little oddity. It's a variation on Jenga but with business cards and multiple strategies and tricks to build. Family loved it.

Had a buddy that celebrated it as well by convening and hosting a bunch of friends for board game night. It was mega fun. 👍
