Problem is, how do you know the revival will result in a good conversation?

I addressed the issue jsut this morning in this post.

The problem is with ppl posting the same simple questions, most of which are addressed in the FAQ, and each of them making a thread about it. There is a lot of good content on gtp that is buried by this crap and I think we can expand the knowledge of newbies like me (maybe 2yrs lurking/posting) by pushing some of the stupid content off the front page.

Not many people are a fan of gravedigging, but if the alternative is to have a page half full of locked threads created by newbies that didn't read the AUP, then call me a necrophile.

So what? There's nothing wrong with reviving a thread if good conversation results from the revival. The mods would rather see us revive a thread than start a new one that's already in existence.

Thank you JohnnyFioma. Very informative. +Rep

Indeed. Since I don't follow the series I wouldn't know that the BMWs wouldn't be driven in DTM. So thanks for that info!

Just to reiterate, I agree that reviving a thread could make for good 'new' convo. Also, just want to point out that just because we're tagged with "New Member" doesn't necessarily mean we're new to the forum. I've been a member since '05. I just don't post. Hmm...That said, I'm not even sure if the number of posts one makes advances the level of membership (ie; New > Senior > Gold > Platinum, etc...) :)

It does, when I hit 200 I rolled over too senior member so get back in your corner newbie (jk).

If you'll look back to the question that revived the thread, you'll see it doesn't add anythin to the topic. It just asks a question which could've been asked as a separate thread.

Then again, he would've probably been told to search, in which case he wouldn't have ended up in this thread.

Because we're all car fans here. And it's interesting talking about the DTM and what cars are allowed in it and stuff. It's a topic of conversation that's guaranteed some discussion. I would take a chance reviving such a thread if I had this question in mind.

It's like you take a chance. If nobody else wants to discuss it, fine...it's still better than starting a new thread when there's already one in existence. 💡

Now if somebody revived a 7 year old thread about "where do you find DTM cars?" and the answer is obviously been done to death and irrelevant to good discussion, that's a bad idea. Everyone's gonna go: USE THE SEARCH!!

Even I, someone who considers realism as just another word for fun, half wish there was just some random car, like 79' Civic or something that could enter the DTM series. Leading an A4 and 190 Evo through the Karussel on the first lap with a 30 year old rust-colored 206hp FF Civic with a meaningless spoiler on the back ftw.

Now, can someone explain why you can't use this car, but you CAN use the Alfa? I mean, it IS Deustche Touring!!! But someone please explain if I am missing out on something.

DTM stands for German Touring Car Masters. They're not just regular touring cars (at least not nowadays).

Anyway, to answer your questions, the BMW 320i Touring Car I believe is a car used in the WTCC (World Touring Car). In WTCC, the cars are something like 250 to 300 horsepower or something like that. In DTM, at least the modern ones, they put down like 500-600 horsepower, they're much more powerful than regular touring cars like WTCC and BTCC (British Touring Cars).

The Alfa 155 was in DTM in the 90s if memory serves me right, so that's why it's there, just like how the 190E was in DTM in its day as well. I don't think recall any BMW touring cars in recent times, certainly not the 320i. If BMW did have a DTM car, it'd be more like a M6 or M3.

You can't use the BMWs in the DTM because they weren't DTM cars. The GTR was used in sportscar / GT / Le Mans style race series and the 320 touring car was used in the ETCC / WTCC which have completely different rules to the DTM.

You are correct. The GTR was used in the American le mans series from 2001 to 2003 or 2004. I can't remember the dates specifically so correct me if I am wrong.
