OK, so I was drifting in this japanese lobby just tuning, and this guy come and started tandem drifting with me. after about 10 laps he wrote this

"klev ^_^ drift"

to which I replied

"dude *o* drift " -cant remember his name

we were both complementing the other with pictures lol. So could anyone teach me how to write "nice drifting" in japanese using the english alphabet? Im not sure if you can but hey, That guy was awesome!

Just type it into Google Translator, after its done translating there should be some english writing with the pronunciation of the word.

Nice drifting: Hyōryū nīsu

Uh I'm half Japanese and while my Japanese isn't that great, i'm sure "Hyōryū nīsu" doesn't mean "nice drifting"...

You can say "dorifto sugoi!" or "yoku dekirune~" if you want to compliment his drifting. If you want to thank his compliments, go with "arigato (everyone knows that one )"

Or keep using pictures. It seems to work pretty well

Yeah that was pretty clear... I never said your Japanese was wrong though. I was just trying to help the OP out here, and answer his question, rather than have him say some completely irrelevant phrase to a stranger over a video game.

Unfortunately with google translate it is quite capable of giving wrong or different words. I found this when learning Indonesian.

That's usually only translating horrifically different languages, like European to Asian in general. That usually ends in tears.

But when you're working with, say, English and German, I've yet to really see Google Translate fail to any important standing, even to the point I'll double check my grammar with it.

The problem with Google Translate is that it looks at each word individually, not the whole sentence. As my French teacher said as an example, "I played a football match", the match was actually a fire-lighting match. So it doesn't take in the context.
