Ask GTP About Your Car Problems/General Questions

Just make sure everything is sealed and tight. If you've got a can of WD-40 laying around, spray and check for bubbles. Smoke machines are nice to have but are expensive. Pics?

Thanks. I'll try that.

If it's still acting up then I'll get pictures.

UPDATE: I figured out the problem, no hoses involved. :D As it turns out, it was simply an electrical cabe that had disconnected from the Idle-stop solenoid on the carburetor. Always some stupid little thing hey? haha.

So I was on my way to a gas station, and it happened, I think...

Ususally, my car can run into the middle of the E before I worry, but this time, it seems to have run out before leaving the little scale. Granted, it was at the "Empty" side, but usually it moves about a 16th of an inch further to the left...

My engine died, with zero warning. (EFi, 1.6 Gasoline, Manual) I believe it may have been because I was out of gas, and the injectors got all gummed up with sediment from the bottom of the tank.

I put 2 additional gallons of fuel, and then tried to just turn the key to on and off several times, hoping to clear the fuel line. Nope. Tried to get it to start probably 15 times, no such luck. Help me? Is the fuel pump gone, or do the injectors need cleaning? How much does that cost?

Are you sure it's fuel related ? If you turn on the key, you should be able to hear the fuel pump cycle for a second or two. If you do not hear it, suspect the pump or the fuel pump relay. It's unlikely that all at once every injector got plugged from sediment. It still should, at minimum, hit on a couple of the cylinders and act like it wants to start. If you can hear the pump cycle, then you may want to investigate the electrical system / ignition system. How many miles are on this car ? Timing belt been replaced lately ? It could have jumped time / belt snapped.

It had its 120,000 mile service recently. All belts were replaced. When I turn the car on, I hear a click, and then it clicks again, as if to shut off, a few seconds later. I think that MAY be the fuel pump, but I am not certain.

I'm not certain it was fuel related, that was just my first assumption since I had already done 210 miles, and I usually get no more than 240, if I had been driving carefully.

Thanks!

So my sister was driving me home from work. The Engine light goes on. I don't know a thing about cars. We took a look when we got out of the car, the oil and A/T fluid look fine, though it was difficult to make out the power steering fluid level. The engine light goes on for that too, correct?

ALRIGHT!. My car needed a new sunroof glass so I drove 30 mins to the abandon vehicle place to go see my old exact car. Took sunroof off of it and drove home. Tried putting it in and its too big.

Now how in the HELL DOES THIS HAPPEN? TWO SAME EXACT CARS (240sx).

Aftermarket sunroof? If so which one is the aftermarket, how do I figure this out.

I tried looking up if these cars had different size sunroofs but the answer was no. All fastbacks have the same size.

No. The check engine light will not go on for low fluids. Depending on the year of the car it could be something as simple as a gas cap not being tight enough(later ob2 emissions require a fuel system vacuum check). Have her take it to an auto part store like advance auto parts or autozone, they will scan the light for free and tell you what code it threw.

Nissan OEM manual hatchback moonroof glass actually says Nissan in the glass and is tinted. There are aftermarket moonroofs that look and function like the OEM unit, but don't have the same dimensions. All coupes with OEM sunroof were electric only.

Pics of the roofs? Both could be aftermarket...

Nevermind, yea this one takes a aftermarket one. Thanks anyway

Nothing major, (I hope) my wife's '04 Bonneville when you drive around (sometimes on straights and mostly on turns) you can hear sloshing under the dash, like its full of water. i assume it might just be washer fluid but I dont know. any ideas folks?

^
The only item under the dash that would have liquid in it would be the heater core. If the core is bad / leaking, the coolant will slosh around in the heater box. When you turn on the heater, do you smell anti freeze ? Does the windshield mist up when you turn on the heater ? Are your floorboards damp ? Feel the carpet, if it smells like anti freeze, well ... If you answer yes to any of the 3. replace the heater core.

What is the freaking part that is suppose to go on this windshield motor. Its freaking making me mad.....

If I try to put the motor through the little hole thing. It wont lock in or anything. I'm told its suppose to have a snap or something.

I apologize for the terrible description >_< 240sx

I don't think mine has the Nissan Logo on the sun roof. It is manual also.

Im here again..... I bought a sunroof and it was Freaking to small so I need a simple question answered

I took apart the whole sunroof. Measured it 17 x 31. Am I looking for cut hole size or outer frame size?

Anyone know where I can purhase cab mounts and pillars for a '85 F250 Regular Cab? I cannot find them anywhere and I really don't want junkyard ones.

Did you try the catalog companies like LMC truck,NPG or something similar? I would think that would be your best bet.👍

If you don't know what you're doing with a sunroof, then you should take it to a professional to get it installed. If you D.I.Y it, then it will most likely cause problems later on.

Anyone have advice on how to get plugs like these off easily? I'm having trouble with this one.

If you're talking about the little black connector then I usually just stab it with the smallest flathead screwdriver I can find.

LMC doesn't make them. Never heard of NPG before.

This.

I have a bit of a question.

I have a car that has a 3000lbs towing capacity, according to the owner's manual. This summer, we're planning on renting a caravan that weighs approx. 2800lbs, to tow on an 800 mile road trip.

On top of that, the car will be loaded with 3 adults, 1 small child, 1 big dog, and all our luggage.

Basically my question is: is all of this safe? Is it ok to tow something so close to the limit across such a long distance, with the car itself being loaded with stuff?

Update on Sunbird probalems - the rough running could apparently be anything in the fuel system OR rotted ignition wires.

I have, however, found that when you beat on it (which is happening more often now, due to my tendency to leave for work at the last possible moment), it seems to run smoother for a little while afterwards. Recurring clog somewhere?

Depends on how hilly it is. Towing heavy loads will make your engine run hot so above all else make sure your cooling system is working properly.

Dirty throttle body ? it can get quite gummy in there on the back of the throttle plate and surrounding areas.

It works fine as far as I know, the car's only got 40k miles on the clock. However the coolant has never been changed (though its been topped off at least once); should I look to get that done before the trip?

What I'm most concerned about is damaging the frame. The caravan is 2800lbs as it is and most likely the dog + 1 adult and small child will be riding in it, so it'll pretty much be at the 3000lbs limit. Would it perhaps be safer to try and loan a lighter caravan or am I stressing over nothing?

That could account for the rough tip-in and the hesitation as well, so probably worth checking out.

I should probably check the fuel lines and filter too, I know modern gasoline can degrade the lines after a while and this thing sat for 6 years with almost zero use before I started driving it. If the fuel lines are starting to come apart that could exacerbate the problem as well as causing leaks later.
