And they will do so with an entirely new product, called GT, which will show its fangs during the 2017 Salon Prive, starting with August 31, at the Blenheim Palace, in Woodstock, Oxfordshire, England.

To mark the occasion of building a new road-legal vehicle more than 50 years after the Italian company renounced this idea, a preview image has been released showing the brand's logo, on top of a sketch that provides us with our first look at the upcoming exotic car.

Not much is known about the new ATS GT so far, except that it's powered by a twin-turbo V8 engine, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Styled by the brand's chief engineer, Emanuele Bomboi, only 12 units will be built (by hand), using lightweight composites and carbon fiber for the bodywork, interior and chassis, all of which part of the Launch Edition version.

"This is a pivotal day for ATS and our new supercar. We use words such as 'challenge, adventure, and passion' to represent the values that were shared among all the founders of ATS in 1962", said owner Daniele Maritan. "Today, we find the same values in the talented people bringing back this historically important brand. Salon Prive was the obvious destination for us to launch our luxury and historically important supercar this Summer, and we can’t wait to show it off to the public.”

How can a marque formed as a failed breakaway from Ferrari in 1962 return more than 50 years later? They went bankrupt in 1965.

Were the deaths of Enzo Ferrari and Gianni Agnelli some kind of precondition?

It's like starting a new car company and deciding to call it Edsel. Not only did they choose a name with at the most a very loose connection to the modern company, but they chose the name of a company which did very little and quickly failed.

Worked for Bugatti/VW.
I dunno, Bugatti was famous for its incredible road cars as well as its success in racing; it's not really remembered for failing after Ettore passed away. ATS, on the other hand, built 12 cars over three years and then folded.

It was still dead in the water as a car manufacturer, having moved onto engineering trains and aircraft landing gear - a form which it still exists as.

The only real difference between Bugatti and all the other long since defunct manufacturers that get or attempt to get revived, is VW's deep pockets.

I thought it was the wheel company building a car... :(

They tried that once before, didn't work out. Then again it was Formula 1 they did it in, so that could explain why they probably wont ever do that sort of thing again.

Indeed. It takes a lot of money to start a car company, and using an existing brand isn't going to help much with that. According to the Wikipedia article, Tesla has had around $5 Billion worth of investment from various sources to get it where it is today.

Is this the same ATS that was in Formula 1 in 90s/80s?

Great. Just what the world needs. Another Grand Theft Auto-styled vapourware supercar.

So it's just a restyled 650S? I guess I can live with that, since theoretically it will at least drive well and be fairly reliable. On the other hand, if all they were doing was restyling an existing supercar, they could have at least been a bit more adventurous:
