Evo VIII review for Aussie Tuners
I really like this tune, despite the fact that I don’t really like the car. The Evo VI and IV are fun to drive but the Evo VIII is rather underwhelming in comparison. I was pleasantly surprised with this tune. It seems twitchy to begin with, but with a bit of practice that twitchinesss simply allows some really late and precise braking.
The one problem I did have with the car was instability under high-speed braking, and regaining control if it does flip out. Also, the top speed could have been higher, not that I really wanted much more speed with my high-speed braking problems, but I’m sure it could have done with another 10-15 mph. With some practice I was able to turn in some really good times with this tune, and it beats the living crap out of my previous tune. The only other problem (if you could call it that) I had with the car is that it takes a bit of time and attention-span to really push it hard both into and out of corners. Once this is learned the car rides beautifully.
I put about 80 miles on the car before realising that I was in practice mode and could not gauge tyre wear. It seems like a tune that would churn through the rubber. I’m sure to be using this car quite often, so would you recommend any changes for a R1 or R2 setup?
I initially ran the car a few times without the weight reduction, and got it to behave completely differently. With the extra weight and sports tyres (and some suspension alterations that I forgot to write down) the car seemed to blur the line between a grip and drift tune. This version is obviously slower to drive than the original one but I found it an equally entertaining ride, happy to initiate drift/long powerslides and really controllable with good exit speed
Also, you were right about the TCS, I think it was confusion with notes for another car, cause it was set at 0 when I checked today.
