...Finally, I got to watch this film back-to-back with Spiderman: Homecoming.
I think that was a mistake, because I found Baby Driver to be a noticeably inferior film of the two. On its own, I'd have thought it was an okay movie, but now, I think it's messy, unfocused and suffering from "style over substance" issue.
It definitely could have done wonders if the running time was shorter by 15 minutes or so. And although its soundtrack was touted heavily, I thought that, with the exception of handful sequences, the BGM ended up being actually rather distracting and weirdly enough, mismatched to what was happening on screen.
The currently-beleaguered Kevin Spacey looked utterly bored, or maybe was told to play the more detached, monotone version of Frank Underwood. I dunno. The actor playing the MC - can't even remember his name - was devoid of charisma. Jon Hamm looked like he was having fun, so there's that. Jamie Foxx, meanwhile, must've been given instructions to play a more psychotic version of himself.
And to me, the biggest issue was that the film didn't seem to know what it was supposed to be. It's not really a chase movie, it's not a heist movie, it's not a thriller, it's not a comedy, it's not a musical as some have argued, it's not a romance - so what was it trying to be? Being a jack of all trades means it's a master of none, and it kinda showed.
Colour me disappointed.
