I'm trying to decide which browser to use instead of IE6 - stupid Microsoft could include a built in popup-killer and slim it down resource wise.

I'm using Opera 7.11 at the moment, but it has a few little oddities that really annoy me.

Anyway, convince me people.

I use Mozilla on my Linux box. I like it because it's lightweight and it has popup stoppers in it. And, I also like the fact that when you need plugins, all netscape ones are compatable, so it's not like it's only the other way around.

Heh heh, I didn't expect you to remember Safari, Shannon, but good job! :D:tup:

Safari for me, most definitely. Incredible rendering speed, excellent stability, tabbed browsing (big plus)... it's all good.

rjensen, how can you possibly say that Mozilla is lightweight? Mozilla carries quite a bit of garbage with it...

Meh, I dunno. To me, it seems lighter than Netscape, and it runs on a crappy 200mhz computer. I suppose I could start looking around for better Linux browsers...

Well, just about everything's lighter than Netscape, what with all of the Java BS that it carries around! ;) Netscape would be Mozilla's fat brother, and Mozilla ain't much skinnier... are there any other Linux browsers that are based on the Gecko rendering engine? Quite frankly, Gecko is one of, if not, the best rendering engine, but the only non-bloated browser that I'm aware of that uses it is OS X's Camino...

Why exactly did you put Safari on the poll? I mean, it only works on Mac OSX and there is an Other option.

Yeah, I've used Crazy Browser before. It was built off Internet Explorer. It's virtually just IE with a pop-up killer and tabbed browsing.

I still use IE6. Getting sick of it. I've downloaded both mozilla and opera. Havent installed either yet. Prolly mess around with those as soon as I get Battlefield 1942 to work again.

Well I just fixed the BF1942 problem. Took me all this time to realize it was just one file that was causing it. :odd: Now then, I think I'll install Mozilla to see if I like it.

Mozilla's good. Trying to find a nice skin for it.

So, what's new with Mozilla? I still use IE6...how much would the download be?

Mozilla uses less system resources (so you're computer won't get bogged down and operate real slow), it is skinnable, has tabbed browsing (so you can view multiple web pages within the one Mozilla window) and it also supports all major web standards, so most pages will display correctly (unlike Opera).

Im new to using Safari and i agree with everything Sage says :) it's all good.

I notice that Safari shouldn't really be here, but the thread title suggest's that it should...

But on your original question,,sorry i don't have a clue about this PEE CEE stuff But i know IE sucks

I put Safari on the poll.

I did it because it's actually more interesting to find out how many people are using it. You'd listed all the mainstream browsers for Windows and Linux, but had excluded Mac users. This is surprising given that you develop your own web sites: do you care so little about whether your site works on a Mac that you're not even willing to find out how many people are browsing on Macs?

I use IE6 on the PC, plus Mozilla on Linux, and occasionally Opera, usually when I'm looking to resolve an issue that I think may be caused by incorrect standards compliance.

I just meant that why put it on there if only a few may use it. If it was a crossplatform browser than I would be fine with it being on the poll.

As with websites, I try to make them compatible with other browsers. One thing gets me though, how does your OS effect the display of a web page? I thought it'd be up to the browser.

The browser does the rendering, yes. However, all applications hook into the core graphics subsystem, which is run by (and therefore dependent upon) the operating system.

Additionally, different OSes come with different font sets, which can affect your designing, and some will do things such as font smoothing slightly differently, which could also affect your choice of fonts/sizes etc.

So you're saying, the only thing that may be effected by the OS is the fonts and sizes?

... and colors, and maybe javascripts. Most Linux distros require users to add a java runtime program, and so far I've been unable to put one on my 200mhz box. But then again, so far that's only given me troubles for Open Office and LimeWire, the browsers I downloaded and installed a plugin and they work now...

Man I dont know if its just this version of Mozilla but its a freakin resource hog. Much more than IE. I just hope its this version.
