Just from analysis, but after comparing the sounds of the 458 Italia in Gran Turismo to other video game examples and real life examples, I feel the audio recording of all stock cars done by Polyphony Digital are sourced from the engine bay, and not from the exhaust. The 458 Italia stays true to the Ferrari sound, but it's as if it's coming from the heart and rather not the mouth (wow that sounds pretty weird).

A fully moded 458 Italia with racing exhaust just happens to sound like an old F1 car however :D same goes with an MP4-12C.

My thoughts on the Lotus 97T.

Its a bit to like the X2010 - X2014 tweaked.. 3rd Person sounds god awful. Interior is close. But still not accurate.

I watches those videos plenty of time. And heard one in real life. I'm not silly..

It sounds pretty accurate, except that it's missing the deep sound grumbling of the car.

Another car I have to give props to for good sound is the Mazda 787B. After I was struggling in the 24 Min of Le Mans race with the Sauber, I bought the 787B. It's was refreshing to hear the engine sound of the 787B over the horribly abmysal and inaccurate engine sound of the Sauber.

Sauber...ah...My favorite in GT4...I will wait for the sound update...

I agree. The Lotus is good, the 787B is damn good

I think we need to correct "god awful" to "blissful" ;)
Oh and "very accurate"

97T sounds too digital in GT6. I hate that weird high pitched digital sound it has mixed in with the original sound when it's accelerating (see GT6 video above).

The Cizeta V16T sounds pretty good in low to mid revs but is supposed to have a more muscly sound in the high revs.

I don't find that the samples of the V16 transition too well when going up the revs.

One time I was racing on the Nurburgring and I was stuck behind a Ford GT40. I really enjoyed the sound from that motor. It makes a mean low, grumbly, growl noise. It has to be the best sounding car in the game.

Quite a few sound brilliant.

Saleen S7/Isuzu 4200R/Camaro Z28 RM/Spyker C8 all sounded dirty and mean on race exhausts in GT5, imagine they'll sound the same in GT6. The BMW 507 makes this sound as well.

Taurus SHO stock sounds surprisingly mean. I wish there were more USDM V8 FF sedans in the game TBH. I basically want to be American.

Superbird has an awesome stock sound. A sinister rumble.

VW 1200'66 makes a nice rasp on stock exhaust. I'd take the power cut for a more 'Herbie'-esque growl.

The Nineties Imprezas. All of them sound just right on the stock exhaust. Previously it was just the 22B and STi version V that made that sound. Now all of them, even the early '94 models make it.

Lancia Delta Integrale stock.

Audi quattro '82 in previous games made the metallic thrumming howl on the stock exhaust. Haven't tried it on GT6 yet.

The Saleen S7 actually sounded awesome with stock exhaust in GT5 before an update which changed it to a much worse sound. The old sample was like one used in Ford GT LM race cars but it was slightly smoother and louder as well. In one race with street supercars I was passing one car with Saleen being a few meters ahead of me and still I barely heard other cars or even my own because the Saleen was so loud. It was about as loud as Red bulls in GT6 if I remember correctly. Haven't tested it with racing exhaust in GT6 but I think it uses same sound as those Ford GT LM race cars as mentioned before which isn't too bad considering they both have big crossplane V8.
