Best track for learning drifting?

What's the best track for drifting as a noob? I've been using Trial Mountain, but that helix in Cape Ring looks NUTS! Would that be a good spot to practice, or does it really take pro drifting to sustain that kind of drift?

My drifts are feeling very forced and not very drifty. It feels more like I'm yanking the car sideways and then just sliding sideways with very little forward movement until the turn exit. I lose a TON of speed and can't begin to get it back until I stop sliding. Any throttle just makes me spin out. I'm thinking that long turn in Cape Ring would be a good spot to practice keeping a sustained drift. Or is that kind of drift impossible for a noob?

EDIT: This guy is nuts. How does he do an entire lap without ever actually having traction?

In the video that's Cape Ring North one of the better tracks for drifting from the cape set. If your starting out I would use a flat track like Tsukuba or like Autumn ring even though it's not totally flat it's a good track like the above poster mentioned.
 
I personally drift my cars on Trial Mountain or Deep Forest Runway in my opinion. They have pretty good corners. Or, you could try Eiger Norway if you're skilled enough.
 
They arent impossible, Id suggest starting out with tsukuba, then when your getting better, try eiger. Its not all that hard to do after a while. Its even harder in a 600hp viper around those hairpins. But just practise practise practise and soon you'll have it.
 
like previously mentioned.... autumn ring mini, tsukuba and suzuka east are great tracks to get the feel of the basic drift techniques.

to me: im in love with the create-a-tracks with extreme banks, constant elevation change and tricky corners :)
just dont over do it tho

He has traction hence why its called "drifting" and not spinning out.

Tskuba (how ever spelt)is clearly the best track to train on because it has all variations of cornering. Also once you have a higher powered car you can drift the whole thing and feel like a badass
 
I prefer a custom toscana track. Something with hairpins, long and short corners and banked corners uphill and downhill. This teaches you about all drift corner with only 1 track. =D
 
Best track would be what you feel comfortable and like to drift in. While counter steering and throttle is key to sustain a long drift.
Trail mountain is a good place to start with imo. Cause of the long bends and the corner is wide too. Just that it can be a bit bumpy on the track.
Suspension settings can compensate that just fine.
 
Been practicing on Trial Mountain since GT4, but I think Eiger covers more variety of corners...
 
The guy in the M5 Drifting is using a wheel... Makes drifting a whole lot easier w/ less chance of mess ups than the DS3 controller.

Its actually quite difficult to drift on a wheel compared to a controller, but that depends on how you look at it. As far as tracks to practice drifting goes, Id say some form of a Tokyo Bay Kart track would be best because of no elevation or banking changes.
 
^Agreed. Admittedly I have been trying to drift with a wheel that has just 90 degrees of rotation but at first it seems to be much harder. I do notice though that the more you improve a wheel is easier to drift with. Looks smoother too as you don't get the twitchy wheels that you might with ds3 drifting

Having smooth movements out of the front wheels is definitely a huge advantage over controller drifting. I wish they would patch the game to lower controller sensitivity lower than -2, the way the game is now not even -200 would make your front wheels smooth enough.
 
Suzuka east course is my favorite personally. The corners on Tsukuba are a wee too tight for my fd at the moment so I stick to Suzuka where I can usually get a nice line the whole way around.
 
i like to use top gear test track, its open enough so that if i spin i wont hit the wall, and its has a bunch of good corners.

Thats sort of a win-lose situation with that track. Yes its wide open and has a lot of room, but thats also its downfall. You can just throw it into a corner and hope for the best, most likely doing a huge four wheel stall. You dont have to focus on any real technique to just drift around it, but to drift it properly you do for sure.
 
Suzuka is working great for me. Just so I can get used to the throttle control and how much input with the counter steer I need to use to maximize my smoothness and angle.

Suzuka is a pretty tough track for somone just starting out drifting from the beginning. You have experience from Forza so its a bit less alien to you. With that track, your entry speeds, transitions and everything have to be spot-on otherwise youll lose your momentum and fail.

I still stand by my statement that Tokyo Bay Kart tracks are the best for learning. For the most part theyre low speed with plenty of variety to
practice technique. Not to mention no banking or elevation change which generally gives beginners headaches.
