Exterior/History:
In the early 50s, VW was well known to build cars, that were reliable and fuel efficient for the average man. Although their cars were good, people wanted a classier, more beautiful car to ride in. The higher powers of Volkswagen thought itd be smart to build an elegant high class car, a car that would be on everyones want list.
So, Volkswagen contracted Karmann, a German coach builter. Then, Karmann asked Italian firm Ghia for a sports car design. Ghia dug up an already made, but unused one (it was originally made for Chrysler). Then they modified it so that it would fit on a slightly modified VW Beetle platform.
The VW executives were enthralled by the new concept. So, in August of 1955, they built the first Karmann Ghia. The public loved it, and so over 10,000 of them were sold the first year, wowing VW.
They loved the looks, the quality, the class in it. Yes, it isnt a true sports car, since it used the Beetles 36 HP 1.5 L Flat 4, but the great looks, the Beetle reliability, and the handcrafted body more than made up for it.
Unfortunately, the Karmann Ghia was discontinued in 1974, because of safety regulations and its sluggish sales. But it has (and still is) capturing peoples hearts. An owner of one has let me test out his 68 Karmann, for this day only. Its one of the few extensively modded ones, and since Im the tuner geek, it fits me well.
Thanks go to Wikipedia for the information of the history of this car.
The Good
:
It is very nimble, and it can never understeer. At least not with my settings. The Ghia is easy to turn, and power through without losing power, which many low HP cars cant boast about. I can go very easily through the kink at Midfield Raceway without even slowing down. Getting its tail out isnt hard, but keeping it tucked in isnt a chore, thank God. Its rear will slide a bit, but not much. Pretty much, it excels in its handling
And the bad:
And theres a reason for that. The Karmann Ghia only has 110 HP, and thats with at least 90,000 Cr worth of engine upgrades put in. It has a weird powerband. Its torque peaks out at 2000 RPM, which youre past in the following seconds. Its HP peaks at 5000 RPM, and the redline ends at around 7500 RPM. That means if you shift to the highest scream, youll be flailing around where theres barely any power available. I have to look at the tachometer to make sure Im getting power. And then I cant concentrate on the road if Im always looking for when to shift. The top speed is 104 MPH. And the Karmann hits the redline when youre almost finished going down a straight. I could stretch the gears so it hits 115 like it could, but that means sacrificing acceleration. A lot of it. And we dont need that.
The braking was crappy, too. Seriously. When a car is going 100 MPH, it better stop real quickly. My Corvette C1, that is 15 years older than the this.
Conclusion:
Its Photomode fodder. Nothing more, nothing less. You can try to salvage it, for some good 2 player battles, but theres better cars for the job, like a Ford Ka and the Volkswagen Lupo. But you got to admit, it looks good in Photomode. It should make for some good pictures.
