There was no 2006 M3 CSL -- as Poverty said, it was a limited production model. He was also correct in calling it the "911 GT3" to the M3's "911 Carrera"...the CSL had extra horsepower, lower weight (it even has a carbon-fiber roof and a cardboard trunk floor), a different front bumper, different rims (IIRC), high-performance track tires, a small lip spoiler on the trunk lid, and a significantly higher price.

The only other E46 M3 derivative has been the M3 GTR Strasse Version, which was a very, very limited production model that had a V8 and a real spoiler.

Then, of course, there's the M3 Competition Package, A.K.A. M3 CS, which is just an M3 with some performance-oriented goodies.

Thanks, done a little research and found the M3 CSL was only releases in 2003.

Took a look at the M3 GTR Strasse Version, but it's not the sort of thing I'm looking for, despite it's huge price tag and exclusivity in Australia.

Also the 2003 CSL is just too 'DTM' to me, as this car will eventually and no doubt be finely tuned in the future, with the addition of body enhancements not to the liking of either of these cars.

I just watched the BMW M3 CS VS. AUDI RS4 and the car looks great.
So I am left with the 2006 BMW M3 CS!

The only thing now left behind buying this is whether the next M3 will be any better, what's your opininon: E46 M3 or E92 M3?

EDIT: E56?

lol there is not E56.

Its the E92 your after, (E90 is the sedan, E92 is the coupe)

The E46 M3 was a very accomplished car, although earlie models didnt suit british roads all that well. The E46 is definatley a legend, and the E92 should be even better, and if you can snap one up straight away, chances are you could drive it for a year and still sell it for a profit afterwards.

If I had the money Id wait untill I read some reviews of the E92, and if you dont wnat it atleast the E46 will be even cheaper to buy.

As Poverty noted, the next 3-series coupe is the E92. Here's a link with a list of all of the BMW chassis codes, so that you don't have to ask ;) : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW#Series_Generations

The E92 M3 will undoubtedly be a better-performing car, but I think it all depends on your preferences, because pure performance numbers are not what the M3 is all about -- the E46 may not seem very powerful with "only" 333hp, but the driving experience it offers and the handling poise it possesses are said to be positively sublime.

Anyway, do you like the scream of a straight-6 or the growl of a V8? Which one looks better to you? Shallow reasons to pick one car over the other, yes, but they matter more when it comes to sporty, fun cars. :sly:

^ Shallow reasons are the only ones that matter in a sporty car purchase.

As for the growl of a V-8, noone has heard the M3 V-8 in final trim that I know of, so it's hard to say exactly what it will sound like, should be glorious though.

 👍 that's the naked truth. If you've got that much money to blow on a car, you can afford to snotty and picky.

I don't care what it sounds like, though, as long as it goes fast.

E56?, well after the E36 then E46 it seemed to catch on.

As Poverty said I'm going to wait for some reviews/ road tests of the E92 w/ V8 upon release which will probably give me a good idea of whether the V8 is really that much better than the six.

At the minute I'm leaning towards the E46, as sixes have always been more to my favour.
So my decision will no doubt be in the soon future, thanks for all your help.

That's your definition of a sleeper? I don't agree with it, but I won't argue against it, because I'd rather not get into semantics, here.

I'll just say this -- my definition of a sleeper is a car that looks like something ordinary, when it really isn't. The E36 and E46 M3's look enough like the "ordinary" 3-series cars to qualify, IMO.

Oh, and being loud never comes into it -- it's all about speed and cornering prowess.

The bit about it being loud was a joke. All those kids driving rotted Civics with nothing but a failed exhaust upgrade....

What I meant by "sleeper" was something that is deliberately fooling you into thinking it's something that it's not. When a 1990 Hyundai Elantra with fading paint pulls up next to you, your first impression is, well, it's junk. But if that Elantra had two 4G63's like the 2003 SCC USCC entrant, you won't be first to the next traffic light. That's a sleeper. The S4 and M3 are just real subtle.
