If this M6 were a person, I'd say it was former high school quarterback just turned fifty with hopes that his scrawny son joins a team. I think that vibe might come from the car's mixture of its (arguably overdone) lines that say "bulky" with the seriousness of BMW that says "businessman." This is the kind of guy you meet at those Superbowl parties that hollers at the TV and swears that if his team had just done one thing differently, they would've had the game in the bag. And yet, he hasn't put on pads or tights for decades.

I'm not the biggest fan.

The convertible version is a bit better, though. Typically I'm not a huge fan of convertibles, but on this car I think that it's really necessary to balance the gruffness and visual weight of the rest of the car. It adds a bit of fun into the equation and makes it feel a bit less chunky.

All that said, I'd like to see one of these in real life. It's a bit difficult to judge from just photos.

California ruined convertibles for me. BMW M cars must be coupes in my book for the serious driver. A convertible is sorta like a Facebook post by an insecure teenage girl.

Or it's perhaps that, like Hammond said in the USA trip he took in a Porsche: I'm driving it for me, not for the people standing at the corner.

There's definitely a stigma around convertibles that ties them with men in their midlife crises trying to compensate for their retracting hairlines (among other things), but I really do find a bit of charm of having the wind whip around your face. At the same time, I'd rather not sacrifice my suspension for it.

^I can see the allure a convertible gives. The sense of open air freedom, the wind, and the engine note singing along.

It looks great no doubt about that, but I'd rather get the coupe and use the money saved to invest in upgrades.

I'm not planning on starting a flame war or anything but I thought it would be interesting to see the main competitor side by side.

Here is the new SL63 AMG along side the M6. Images from BMWBLOG

Ahh the Sl63 is so beautiful when compared to the M6, Mercedes's new front design though, isn't as flattering as it used to be. :(

The new SL is properly Ugly, I like the way it kind of reminds me of 80's SL's, but it is just ugly and a bit weird in it's proportions, the AMG version looks a mess... it actually fits with the "After Market Garbage" tag, like something Wald would produce, its a shame because the SL - previous ones - are usually a really good looking car. This time around the standard one looks better than the AMG! I'd take an AMG E class coupe over this 99 times out of a hundred.

In those pics the M6 looks like it's being driven by a midget, BTW!

Still, I'd take the M6 over anything else...

I'm a massive Merc fan and I liked the direction they had been going in until this new SL which especially from the front looks pretty ugly. There's way too much going on across the whole bodywork and in places it looks like they raided the old SL parts bin and stuck it together with bits of SLS. Its totally out of proportion especially along the side and only the rear looks OK because its a carbon copy of the old one!

It almost looks like another old SL facelift that has had a ton of tat stuck on it, when I first saw it a while back I couldn't believe this was an all new car! Everything else in the Merc lineup I love but this is a very odd looking car.

Also whats with the new Merc's having the 3 pointed star sealed in a solid circle? Is that to hide the night vision and proximity radar? Looks horrible.

In terms of looks, I like the AMG far more than the M6. Where the M6 has bulk, the AMG is lean and carved. I still don't like it all that much--it looks a bit forced. Those gills scream (far too loudly and into my ear), "THIS CAR GOES FAST. LOOOK!." I suppose they're both offensive... just in different ways.

I think Mercedes made a huge mistake with front lights. They ruin the whole car in my opinion. Event hough the M6 is a 4 passenger car the SL still looks much "fatter".

Personally I like the styling of the coupe much more than the convertible.

The M6 looks fat while the SL looks much more muscular. However, in terms of lines and curves and everything I still like the M6 more. The 3-pointed star of the Mercedes looks like a sticker and those headlights are something wrong. Other than that, the SL is definitely a looker!

The M6 is better off in a coupe form. The convertble just doesn't get me that much.

I'm gonna go with the M6 on this one. The shape of the SL is the main thing I don't like. The way it curves downwards at the back, but then you have this stupid spoiler there. And the lights. :yuck:

The guy in the SL has the smallest head in the world.

I was on a bus the other day, and a dude in a new 6 series drove past. I had a good look of the interior... and it had to be one of the nicest I had ever seen. It looked extremely nice.
As for the exterior design, am I the only person who thinks the previous M6 was a much better looker?

interesting comment haha! I usually find that awkward looking cars on camera look better in person. Does that mean that good looking cars on camera arent so good in person?

And then there was the F458 hehe....I love the new M6
