BMW is plotting a return to the high-end sports car market with a dramatically styled coupe and roadster aimed at providing the German carmaker with a rival to the hugely successful Mercedes-Benz SL.

Dubbed Z6, Munich’s latest flagship sports car is conceived as a follow-up to the high-priced and ultra-low-volume Z8, which saw production of just 5703 cars between 1999 and 2003. Z6 will be priced below the $130,000 Z8, and insiders say it will be produced in “considerable volumes.” The car will be built in Germany and will be a high-tech showcase for many of BMW’s latest innovations.

“It is not just a flash in the pan,” a source told AutoWeek at the launch of the Z4 M Coupe. “We’re looking at establishing a whole new model line.”

At least one full-size model of the new car reportedly exists at BMW’s research and development center in Munich, though the final design is still up in the air. The car will form part of a rumored three-strong Z-car lineup including a new entry-level Z2 and a successor to today’s Z4.

The two-seater is already developed to an advanced stage and enjoys strong support from the BMW board.

“A go-ahead is likely, provided BMW can find the necessary engineering capacity,” said the source.

Z6 will be about the same size as the existing 6 Series and will borrow mechanical components from both the 6 Series and the 5 Series. But while the 6 Series was conceived as a luxurious 2+2 GT, the Z6 is envisioned as a pure sports car.

Original reports suggested the Z6 may boast a mid-engine design, but BMW appears to have settled on a traditional front-engine format. The aim, according to one high-ranking insider, is to create a car that combines BMW’s traditional strengths of top-level performance, handling and quality with a raft of new innovations, including lightweight construction to provide it with strong levels of performance but also class-leading levels of economy and low-emission levels.

An M5 powertrain formed the basis of the Z8 supercar; look for lots of M5 and 6 Series hardware under the Z6 sports car.

Keen to avoid the criticism leveled at the Z8, with a design influenced by BMW’s legendary 507, the Z6 boasts a contemporary design with cues from the Z4. The highlight of the new sports car is its high-tech structure—a combination of aluminum space frame and steel unibody construction. BMW is planning to take this technique, pioneered on the 5 Series and 6 Series, one step further in a move aimed at bringing the Z6 to market at less than 3300 pounds.

Rather than using aluminum for the front end only, engineers are investigating using the material for the middle section as well. This should help to achieve a desired 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution.

Unlike the Z8, which was sold exclusively with a 5.0-liter, 400-hp V8, Z6 will come with a range of engines. Sources suggest the lineup will likely kick off with the new 3.0-liter, twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder, with a range-topping version packing Munich’s secret 4.4-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 and an updated version of the M5’s 5.0-liter V10.

Channeling drive to the rear wheels will be a new double-clutch sequential

manual gearbox
It appears to be an M5 but look closely and you will see the lower body, smaller wheels, and what looks like a widebodykit.

Server troubles, Onikaze? I think a quadruple-post is a new record. ;)

I'm liking this idea so far -- I can't wait to see how the Z2, Z6, and new Z4 will look. :)

Yes, MAD server troubles. Even you doubleposted, everyones done it for 15 minutes so far and I suspect I will too.

I dont think its a Panamera.... it doesnt look like one to me, and yes I know that is an M5 body stuck on for disguise....
Anyway would BMW let them do that? Isnt that like copyright infringement or something?
Rollcage, yes, so?

Could this car be the Mystery debut for BMW in July (at the UK motor show ) that everybody is talking about , who know... :)

Porsche has done similiar things before.

If that is a Z car, they're far from anything presentable or formal. If you're testing with a sedan mule, you've got a long way to go if you're aiming to produce a small roadster.

3300 Lbs, capable of carrying the M5/M6 V-10, much lighter than it's size would suggest due to extensive use of Aluminum.

I don't think it's supposed to be small.

Wait, I'm confused. Isn't this technically the Z6?
I mean, technically the Z8 was just an extension of the 850 Ci, so what's going on here?
I also doubt that the "Z6" will have the M5 engine. It's very heavy and expensive, especially for this cars weight target.

You are so far off , the 8 series came as a replacement for they old 6 series , and the new 6 series kind of replaced the 8 series although there was a production gap between them , the 6 & 8 series are coupes that carry 4 people (I think they are call GT 2+2 cars) , the Z8 is a roadster , the Z6 will only carry 2 people and most likely to be a roadster too.

I hope you get it , as I'm not the best guy to explain anything lol

and the new 6 series kind of replaced the 8 series although there was a production gap between them
However, the Z8 replaced the 8-series in BMW's lineup until the 645 replaced it, which is what is making me confused. I'm guessing the Z6 will compliment the 645 Cabriolet, but I'm not sure if that's the case.

The Z8 didn't replace the 8 series it just filled a gap left by the 8 series , and BMW only made about 5700 cars out of the Z8 all hand built and have on eengine option and it was sold at 100k+ $ so you can't really say its a replacment...

What?
The Z8 didnt replace the 8 series nor did the new 6.
Although they are all in the line of rare hi-performance BMWs, they are not alike at all. The engines, the models, the body style. Hell, 2 of them are convertibles!

5 Series Sedan
6 Series Coupe
7 Series Sedan
8 Series Coupe

3 Series Sedan and Coupe (which was going to be a 4 series briefly)
Z4=3 Series sized 2 seater
7 Series Sedan, no more 8 Series Coupe
Z8=Large 2 seater
5 Series Sedan, 6 Series Coupe
Z6=5/6 Series sized 2 seater
1 Series Sedan, 2 Series Coupe
Z2=1/2 Series sized 2 seater

This concludes your lesson on BMW naming conventions.

I think the 6 series could go either way, as the old 6 series was more of a coupe of the 7 series of the 80s , the new one is kind in the middle between the 5 and 7 ....

I dunno about that, the 6 was pretty close in proportion/size to a 5, I know I had an '88 535i, and chanced upon a couple of early/mid 80's Sharks and the lineage is pretty clear.

Also,

makes me happy in the pants.

Very happy in the pants.

The Z8 and 8-series are unrelated. The 8-series "replaced" the 6-series, but was given a higher number because it was a different car -- it was more of a luxurious super-GT than a sports-GT like the 6.

The Z8 was just a limited-production supercar thing that paid homage to the classic BMW 507 roadster. IIRC, BMW's u.s. website called it the "Z4 V8 Roadster."

Nope. Wolfy, you are very correct. If anyone has seen the z8 concept car, it looks sooo similar to the 507, I think it is even named the 507 or something. Anyway, they mention that it is based on the 507.
As for m5 engine, no know.
