Hello

I am new here although have been visiting and learning from this forum as I have just began the steep learning curve to start drifting. I was wondering after viewing so many drifting vids I've seen some drifters using the foot brake mid-drift what does this do? I have tried searching to see if this question has been asked before but couldn't find anything apologies if it has been asked before.

:D

I hardly ever brake mid-drift. I only do it when I sense that my car will hit the outside wall and I don't want to crash. I'm pretty sure the best drifts are ones where you don't touch the brake. However, I do press the brake sometimes if my car straightens out during a big turn, so I can shift the weight forward and initiate a new drift.

im sure they use the foot brake to get more angle....or maybe to slow down some more....i mainly use it to get better angle on haipins or something like that....

i think it depends on how your brake balance is set up. my front is a low number and back is high number, so when i brake, my rear tires slow down and regain some traction so i dont spin out. if you were to set up vise versa, then when you brake, the front tires slow down, giving you more angle. just think compare the speed of your front tires and rear tires. i prefer more braking to the back for fr because you will have more control over the power tires.

So I'm guessing with your setup Divine monk the brake could be used to stop or control the rear end from spinning out

I usually only use the foot brake (mid drift) with AWD/4WD's..... Using the foot brake, mid drift, will give you more angle, and slow you down a bit (in AWD/4WD's).......

;)

I use the brake Mid-Drift sometimes to Balance out my car in a fast braking drift or if you have to slow down for the next corner. Many times though its because your going to fast.

i used that alot when i use my high hp skyline

Sometimes I use the ebrake to make the drift longer, like if I turn in too fast. Otherwise I use it to make the angle of my drift better.

The brake during a drift is usually to slow the car down, making it go more inside the turn, or to gain a bit more angle. I never really used it since my drifts were just that clean, but then again, i was a 4wd drifter.

only time i use the brake is to slow down the drift, usually for me, i use the acc to get more angle, more tire spin = more angle / less traction, for my set ups, i hav brake balance to the rear, so if i get too much angle, if there is such a thing, i can use that to bring it back to a more controllable state. Then again i use mianly RWD's so if ur a 4WD / AWD person, ur outa luck here. The only time i use e-brake however is to elongate a drift, such as in high speed ring, but other than that, its only good 4 ass-draggin FF's or 360's

!! gt2 drifter !! next, ALERT! using handbrakes can also start a "long drift" as in starting the drift "before" reaching the turn giving you a chance to continue drifts ALERT!! LoL

I set my brakes more biased towards the rear, so braking drift is the technique I use the most, I use the E-brake to "extend" some of my drifts though, using footbrake during a drift maybe quite useful when you're going too fast, as it may help a bit in trying to slow your car down or maybe for adjusting the angles...

Well i use the good brake to ether slow down or gain more RPM if my tires are gaining traction by braking then gassing again. It also works for gaining more of an angle like everyone has already said, but it can also be used in shifting the weight to conect a drift. Most people use it for there AWD or 4WD(there is a difference if u liked to go in to detail just ask me) Car. Well hope this helps

Those are the characteristics of AWD cars. They oversteer on entry and understeer on exit.

Braking hard while drifting an FR car causes the car to move to the outside of the turn, say, if you cut too soon. I use this same principle with the e-brake, but I don't use it to get more angle or progress through the corner.

:ouch:

Thanks for all the tips guys I've been getting in a lot of practice and have found that I when I brake during a drift it slows down the car and it gives me a little more control but ideally I want to able to control the drift just with the throttle, gotta keep up the practice for that though!

If you have the brake balance set right you should be able to use the brakes to help turn the car.

Also you can sometimes be smoother on exit if you get gently on the brakes, jam the throttle, and use the brakes to control the wheelspin, rather than the throttle.

I use left foot braking mid drift sometimes to allow a higher speed entrance than I can maintain through a turn. Also, on a specially tuned car, you can go into understeering drift mode if you have over corrected. In real life, this sort of thing is carried out using a "Line lock".
