HEY!! I didn't post that mars trip crap! [edit]Oh, you already edited it. [/edit] They managed 3 HOURS with the dogs--that's a far cry from even 1 day, let alone 5 days, let ALONE multiple 5 day periods. They are obviously using the low temp to slow down the metabolic processes without actually stopping them--without actually killing the cells. So that what little oxygen the individual cells can store goes a long way--like 3 hours long way. Not 5 days worth.

Yes, sorry about that ;) It happens when you manually add a name to a quote.

The five days was a figure I pulled out my...out the air. I was thinking about how long you could keep a piece of meat fresh in a good fridge...not the best analogy I'll agree ;)

While the meat in my fridge may still be ok to eat, the subtle damage to brain cells would be far more critical, and it would only take a few to have dire consequences..so yes maybe five days is a bit of a stretch

Edit: Read your post again...there is no metabolic process involved. The heart is stopped, there is saline solution instead of blood, no oxygen is carried to the organs. The cold temp is to prevent decay.

No problem. Well, I'm sure there are still processes that are taking place within the cells, and the cold temperatures retard those processes, including the action of decay.
