I'm here in Southern California, and it looks like we're in for a direct hit. In order to prevent any panic, you can read that they tell you not to worry, only extremely minor health consequences. Also, you are reminded that weather prediction isn't an exact science. But the longer this thing goes on, and worsens, the more intense and saturated our air will become. I'm an engineer with a scientific background, and can assess the data for myself. My wife and I are planning to have kids within the next few years. One thing you certainly do not want to mix with radiation is DNA. 👎

Anyone else thinking about heading out of town this weekend (or year)?

Radiation does not move like a swarm of locusts. It's not going to group together and descend down on one place. As it crosses the Pacific Ocean, it will disperse. It will descend over America, but it's likely to be so spread out that it will come down from Vancouver to Panama City. The radiation around Fukushima will be strong enough to cause health problems, but the radiation to come down on Southern California probably won't register on a geiger counter for more than thirty seconds.

The projection, by the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization, an arm of the United Nations in Vienna, gives no information about actual radiation levels but only shows how a radioactive plume would probably move and disperse.

This is still largely conjecture, as neither the government or private sector scientists have yet publicly disclosed the exact radioactive elements headed towards the U.S.

/Thread.

Nothing to see here people, move along....

This is probably nothing compared to what we (Europe) had to deal with 26 year ago! Remember => Tsjernobyl

The forecast does not show actual levels of radiation,
Health and nuclear experts emphasize that any plume will be diluted as it travels and, at worst, would have extremely minor health consequences in the United States. And I am central, though I haven't heard anything so far.

Radiation + DNA = WIN?

You are probably at greater risk of turning infertile from your mobile phone or microwave oven than the radiation from Japan.

Wouldn't be surprised if the radiation is still lower than what you experience in a high-altitude flight.

Exactly. Absolutely no reason to get all crazy about it. Just the news blowing things out of proportion as usual.

Or eating a banana. Or going to the beach. Or not washing some fruits off.

The list that you could draw up would be massive.

Don't worry all the smog will protect you. ;) I've lived downwind of the Tonopah test range all my life, whats a little more gonna do? Besides I'm green with envy.:ill:

After Chernobyl parts of europe could detect the radation that was in the ground, but europe is closer to Chernobyl then the west coast of U.S and Japan.

But you are right the americans have nothing to really fear.

/fixed.

Dumb. The harmful radiation from Chernobyl traveled ~1500 miles, about half the width of the Pacific Ocean. The danger from the Fukushima release of radiation isn't even close to how much was released in Chernobyl. CNN and the other news media outlets are exaggerating every reliable story they get. I wish I could read Japanese so I could get some accurate information.

That and Japan are nothing at like, at all.

We will see. The radiation is going to mix in with the smog and what not that is in this valley.

Take a picture before you start to work tomorrow (today if you live where I live :D) and take a picture when you're done working tomorrow (today if you live where I live :P).

Post these photos here on GTP. We'll notice if you lost all your hair. If so, than yes, the contamination was very harmfull. :dopey:

I work around 11 to 3. Probably the major hours of sun light..but I will take one before I head off to work.

Nobody should ever take to heart when the government says there is nothing to worry about. There could be a nuclear missile heading toward the us and the government would still say there is nothing to worry about

with that being said, i think common sense and science prevail in this case. nothing to worry about

Something is puzzling me. On a Belgian site, the reporters say that the radioactive contamination is currently located above parts of Russia and China and will reach the US in two days and Europe in 10 to 14 days.

Am I missing something but I thought that the wind was blowing to the East towards the US. How is it possible that the radioactive contamination is going towards the US and is at the same time already above parts of Russia and China and blowing towards Europe?

This post is because I'm questioning the logic of the journalists in question. Or is my logic flawed?
