Can my internet connection be slowing me down?

Something very weird has been happening to me recently. I'm aware that the online mode has suffered from some glitches in the past, and I'm also aware that offline/online performance is differente - a car is faster offline than online - but things have gotten incredibly slow for me online. I have come to the point that my car becomes even slower in a private lobby.

Some examples:
- Testing with a GT500 car at monza (503hp, 1100kg):
- Offline: 1.41.7
- Online open lobby: 1:43.9
- Online private lobby: 1:45.4

- Same GT500 car, at Nurburgring GP/F:
- Offline: 1:51.2
- Online open lobby: 1:53.6
- Online private lobby: 1:56.5

- Again the same car, at Laguna Seca
- Offline: 1:19.5
- Online open lobby: 1.21.5
- Online private lobby: 1.22.4

All these tests were made with the same car, with all aids off except for Abs-1.

What can be causing such discrepancies? Specially at the private lobby at Laguna Seca, all other cars were lapping at 1:19, 1:18 and my car just seemed to have no grip at all and no change in setup would improve it.

Can my internet connection be slowing me down online? I mean, if I got an unstable connection, how much can it decrease my car's grip and performance? Is that any relation between internet connection/online grip and performance, or am I just being a victim of the different online/offline physics of GT5?

Not a tech myself but have noticed this myself. Dont think it affects your cars performance. But a slow connection prob would cause the game to play slightly slower. Even more so in private lobbys. What meg is your ps3 running at ???

The performance of cars is slightly different in open lobbies and private lobbies. I don't think the speed of your internet can have anything to do with your speed.

I have a 20mb connection. It should be enough, but I had some instabilities with it in the past couple of weeks...

20 meg is more than enough. Other people in your lobby might be affecting it. Open a private lobby by yourself and see if it is the same. If still the same im out of ideas lol

Are you even reading what the OP wrote? His slowest time are from his private lounge, so it's no ones issues but his own.

To The OP, it sounds like you're experiencing lag, even without noticing it. I think it has a lot to do with your connection. You can even see, when you're in a open online lobby you get a faster time. That could mean that others are boosting your connection, as I'm pretty sure PS3's network runs peer-to-peer, could be wrong though.

Yes 20 meg is more than enough but

As this guy^^ states the connection is more important than the speed. And yes GT5 does run peer to peer.

OP what Nat type are you on and what is your ping/upload speed as these are more inportant.

But aren't the online physics different to offline.

Yes but his main point is from online open lobby to online private lobby, The difference between online and offline is rather wide suggesting there is lag. i wouldnt expect that big a difference on the tracks he is using.
My online time on the Nordskleife are around 2 seconds slower than offline and thats a much longer curcuit.

Yes but his main point is from online open lobby to online private lobby, The difference between online and offline could be correct.
I don't know how the difference between private and public lobbies is caused though.

Between the 2 online options does suggest a problem, I cannot get online at the moment (football LOL) but will do a few checks becouse i dont think or even remember any differences, will check though.

Download: 18.9mbps
Upload: 0.98mbps
Ping: 106ms

It seems to me that my upload speed is very slow...can it be because my ps3 is currently in a wi-fi connection?

Your ping is extremely slow as well. As for the WiFi, if it's possible to get the PS3 hardwired, do it.

I'll hardwire my sp3 tonight and run a test. It will probably increase upload speeds, but what can I do about the ping?

As Ross says, your ping is the problem mine is around 20. I strongly suggest you hardwire asap that might improve but if you did the test on your pc then it wont I dont think unless thats wireless as well.

I run 2 PS3 machines hardwired side by side one for Remote B=speccing the other for online racing myself and never have a problem unless someone comes into the room with a bad connection. I have 50meg fibreoptic wich really is the dogs danglies.

If hardwiring doesnt help maybe get in touch with your Internet provider they may be able to tweak things there end. Other things to consider is port forwarding and also how far are you from the exchange assuming your not on fibreoptic. Your upload speed should be fine, are there any other users on your connection at the same time as the PS3 really doesnt like to share its bandwidth either.

Yes, I did the test in my macbook, wich is also wi-fi. Funny thing is, I only started noticing these issues a couple weeks ago. Can my ps3 also benefit by cleaning internet cache?

Dont know wether this will help but i do this every 2 or 3 days.
Switch on PS3
Set time via internet in XMB screen
Sync trophies in XMB screen, just below game save use the triangle button
Load game
Go to options empty cache
Go th GT and save.

Do the hardwire test on your PS3 then go onto internet using PS3 and so speedtest again.

Do I need to backup anything to clean the cache? I'm sorry for the noob question, but I've never done that...

No, just go to options in either menu and you will be fine, its at the bottom of the options menu.

If you're modem/router allows you to set "priorities", set your PS3 to the highest. My ps3 is set to the highest priority so even if my wife's downloading something on her laptop, it won't interfere with the ps3's connection.

Clearing you cache (as others mentioned) helps a bit (I do it once a day and I'm on everyday for a few hours). Clearing this doesn't affect any personal data, only system data.

One thing that has proven to help me a lot, as I NEVER get lag or disconnects, is to not leave GT alone (stand by) in GT Home or online, if you need to be away, exit all the way back to the opening screen. Doing this, it will give you a fresh reconnect back to the GT servers when you re-enter GT Home. Speaking of that, its also helpful to (when in public lobbies) to exit every few hours, exiting will re-connect you and start fresh. When in private lobby, get your car set up first, clear your cache, then get into the lobby. Once you're in, every hour is exit and re-enter, to keep connection fresh.

Hope this helps, as it's helped me very much.

Update: all solved.
Hardwired the ps3 and cleaned the gt5 cache.

Testing at monza (Nissan Calsonic GT-R 08 - 503hp, 1100kg)
- Offline - 1:42.9
- Open Lobby - 1:43.9
- Private Lobby - 1:43.3

Thanks for all the help, guys!
