Caparo T1, Discussion thread.

Nasty incident though, especially as the flames crept forward from the rear.

Especially while traveling in excess of 100mph? Youch...

Trust Fifth Gear to balls it all up. They'll probably say it was the guys at Top Gear trying to get their own back.

Awsome, I laughed outloud when Clarkson blamed Fifth Gear for the barn fire. I bet the FG crew actually chuckled too--and don't be surprised if a tongue-in-cheek remark happens on FG soon. ;)

According to the TV page in the paper today, it's on Fifth Gear tonight.

Time for a quick update on the T1.

This months copy of Evo has just landed on my door-mat and they have put a T1 through its paces. So here are a few independent figures for it.

0-30 - 2.2
0-40 - 2.8
0-50 - 3.4
0-60 - 3.8
0-70 - 4.3
0-80 - 4.9
0-90 - 5.6
0-100 - 6.2
0-110 - 7.0
0-120 - 7.8
0-130 - 8.9
0-140 - 10.1
0-150 - 11.6
0-160 - 13.3
0-170 - 16.1
0-180 - 20.1

1/4 mile = 11.00/143mph
0-100-0 = 11.3

Very impressive figures all-round, however what is quite simply mindbending is the laptime. The current lap record holder at Evos circuit (West Circuit Bedford Autodrome) is the Gumpert Appolo, a stupidly quick, but ugly car I'm sure you would all agree. Even the tight nature of the circuit and short straights didn't stop the Appolo besting even a Caterham R500 and posting a time of 1:19.4 (an R500 does it in 1:20.2).

The T1 absolutely destroys this time, its time (on road legal tyres and road trim) was 1:10.8. Which makes it over eight and a half seconds quicker around a 1.8 mile circuit.

To help put that into better context let me post it up with a few other quick cars.

T1 - 1:10.8
Apollo S - 1:19.4
R500 - 1:20.2
Atom 3 - 1:21.5
430 Scud - 1:21.7
LP560-4 - 1:22.5
Carrera GT - 1:23.3
997 GT2 - 1:23.5
Nissan GT-R - 1:23.6

Quite quick then.

one caught fire on fifth gear, on top gear some floor panel came loose. its fast no doubt but it does appear to be a bit hit n miss in quality. imo the hulme f1 looks better too

Does it mention who does the driving?

Does it mention who does the driving?

It does. John Barker was driving, who drives the vast majority of theh cars for Evo's track times. No tricky race driver swapage here.

In regards to the comments on the car's that caught fire, etc. Please do remember that those were development cars, the Veyron caught fire enough times when it was in development, the difference was that Buggati wouldn't let anyone else drive it at that stage, Caparo would.

Its worth picking up a copy of Evo for Phil Bennett's comments on Clarkson's opinion of the car (understeered too much, unsafe, caught fire, etc). Rather telling of Clarkson's main body of experience being with road biased cars (Bennett basically says that Clarkson overdrove the car and then blamed it rather than himself).

Do you know the number of people in the UK who actually think that's true is quite frankly scary.

+1. And a few on this forum too...

Pretty impressive figures on the T1 then, my brother gets Evo so I'll have to borrow his copy and have a read.

But does it exist? They have articles from magazines on their website but there's nothing newer than 2006.

NEITHER car exists - neither car is in production. We hear a LOT about the Caparo T1, but it's not in production or for sale.

The Caparo exists bacause I've seen it on the telly, and it has been driven by magazines. Does the Hulme F1 exist as a moving car?

I never mentioned and don't care about production of either at this point.

Yes and no.

While no customer cars have been delivered, the car is most certainly for sale and road registered versions do exist. In the UK for a car to be road registered it needs to have production documentation (what is called a Certificate of Conformity) or to have undergone an SVA test.

The T1 in the Evo article is road registered, and as such could be legally sold to anyone they wished to. Feel free to try and argue specifics about that if you wish, but the simple point here is that at least one road legal T1 has been built and run, and should they wish to sell it to a private owner they would have no problem in doing so.

Find me a dealer which actually has a Caparo T1 sitting on the lot. You won't.
