This is a good question. I've probably paid in thousands in insurance premiums (has to be less than $20,000) and I'll probably pay in $100,000 over the course of my life to cover both myself and my wife. This would include homeowners, automobile, and personal liability.
Will I be happy to pay it? No. Would I do without it? No. Would I change what I have to cover? Yes. I sleep pretty good at night knowing that if something tragic happens, I'm covered. I think about some tricky attorney can sue me (and win) for hundreds of thousands of dollars for medical bills for something that isn't my fault, I'm covered and I won't lose all of my possessions trying to pay it off. Yes, this brings up a point of the legal/civil court issue, but I'll stick to the point.
Comedian Chris Rock put it best. It isn't insurance. It's in-case-🤬-happens. Granted, he was talking about medical, but it still applies. Here's his take, if you aren't aware.
