**CAR OF THE WEEK! Friday 22/06/12**

Indeed, there's no doubt it does the job. And in the real world I expect this would be a very good car.

Just ask the guy tailgating you. Odds are, he'll be in an Audi.

Well my tune I posted livens the car up a bit...
It gets the job done in the seasonals

Well, I tried it and could only get second at Laguna Seca and third at Cape Ring. Must be my rubbish driving as it did feel a better car. Much quicker accelerating out of corners, although a bit more prone to lose grip going in.

The appropriate scapegoats offenders have been sacked and correct times processed. The director promises a full review and is appalled by the behaviour of a few individuals who brought shame and embarrassment to the team.

Trial Mountain: stock S3 210bhp 1420KG 406pp CS tyres: 1:49.8

With faith restored the car was taken to the workshop and given the Wallbanger R300 Quattro treatment.

Now I understand what Desparado was up to with this CotW.

I applied the tune to my blue S3, with the exception of splitting the torque 50:50 - I stuck with f40:r60 as I thought this would be less prone to understeer, and brakes bias at f3:r1 (no ABS).

At Trial Mountain, the S3 is now a completely different car: firstly you notice the extra power and close gearing working in combination to provide massively improved acceleration, then as you throw it into to the S bend before the start/finish straight the reduced understeer is a pleasant surprise.

The full weight loss has made this car much more nimble, firmed up suspension reduces body-roll and the diffs provide traction as you apply power. And what grip! With this level of power you have to make a concerted effort to overwhelm the SH tyres and lateral grip is impressive as you power early out of the corners. No need for TCS here.

A few laps in and I really liked this car, having got used to its foibles. I don't use ABS, and even at 3:0 using DS3 the rear end breaks loose very easily, with the slightest turn under brakes sending you sideways. In slower corners you can use this to your advantage to improve turn-in but alot of time was spent sideways and slowing from high speed can be unstable. I did soften up the rear a few clicks as the tune has firm springs, and this helped the braking on the bumps but maybe a tweak of the diff settings might improve things further.

The other thing that caught me out initially was dealing with oversteer/sliding (often induced by braking). In common with most 4wd, you need to be very careful applying countersteer and power together: too much will snap you back as the fronts gain traction and dump you off the outside of the corner. Most of the time it is better to just ride out the slide with POOOWWWEEERRRRR.

No need to slow for the jump at Windy Hill...

Even as a 'rough tune' I thought this was a really good setup, and I'm sure would handle the full power that the engine has to offer. If I can sort out the unstable braking I could see myself using this a lot more 👍

Trial Mountain on SH: 141.6 compared with stock S3 on SH 148.5

As expected the car performs superbly on the mountainous roads of 'Windy Hill', with a respectable 1:06.3 and room for improvement.

I did also try the 530pp 4wd seasonal race at GV and, but couldn't beat the rabbit Scooby STI, being 8 secs behind on my third attempt.
