Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds Die

:(...

Must... not... cry... :(

What is it about 20 bleeding 16?
I think we're coming into an era where the people who are dying are the people whose names we recognise from our own youth. Granted, the likes of Fisher, Michael and Prince all died too young, but they were approaching the later stages of life. I can't see 2017 or 2018 getting any better in that regard.

Been in mourning all day, I thought she was recovering then this happened...... this is a sad day for millions of people around the world. The Carrie Fisher I knew outside of Princess Leia (from watching some of her interviews) seemed very fun to be around, witty, charming and good natured in general. This one is going to be raw for awhile I think. I feel like a part of my inner child died today.

It's true that it's only going to get worse, all the baby boomers stars we grew up with are getting on and that coupled with the fact they lived through the 70's and 80's (not exactly the model decades of health) means that only more will be unfortunately leaving us.

This 2016 crap is driving me nuts. The universe doesn't care what year we've decided it is, there isn't going to be some kind of paradigm shift when we cross the date line in to 2017 on Saturday. This will continue regardless of what year it is because the number of celebrities has increased exponentially in the past fifty years, they have to go eventually.

Yes, for all we know, even more celebrities and icons could die in 2017. The number of the year doesn't decide anything.

Anyways, rest in piece Carrie. You will be remembered for you contributions to popular culture and science fiction as a pioneering strong female lead.

Indeed, we've just hit that period in time where a lot of the famous stars of the 70s and 80s, when celebrity culture really kicked off, are getting into their 60s and beyond. Plus those slightly older from the 50s and 60s are going to be reaching old age. I'm afraid they're going to keep dying, as is nature.

Everyone, well most people anyway, are fully aware of that. It's just a joke that has become a way for people to point blame at a year that has been quite horrid. Dont forget all the horrible political stuff that has also happened that has only added to the hatred of the year 2016. When we look back, we won't just be saying "Oh remember that year where so and so died" it'll be "Remember that horrible year of 2016 which saw countless lovable celebrities pass on and also the election of Trump, Brexit, the crisis in Aleppo and countless terror attacks".

For most people, this hatred of 2016 doesn't exclusively relate to a bunch of celebrities dying, it's also about the horrible things that have happened in the world in a time when we as society are more divided then ever.

I still remember watching A New Hope as a kid for the first time. I was sitting in awe as I watched 3PO and R2 walk down the hall of the Tantive IV. The characters, and later on, the people who played them, became a big part of my childhood. As Yoda said, "Death is a natural part of life." All life must come to an end at some point, for some, too soon.

Wonder if she'll recognize Tarkin's (Peter Cushing) foul stench when she arrives.

Rebel In Peace, Carrie!

The 2016 crap is not as innocent as suggested above, in reality it's just a thinly veiled attempt by bemoaning liberals to politicize these deaths and it needs to go imo, it's very stupid and it takes away from properly remembering the person who died.

If you say so. I like to think of it as a little dark humor, but then you need a sense of humor to think that.

The best I can tell it started on buzzfeed on nov 8th and then it snowballed from there:

Not that I like linking trash sites like buzzfeed but here it is in all it's uh, 'glory':

-edit link removed, the link contained profanity, you'll have to google it yourself

This is not dark humor, this is essentially whining while trying to be clever about it. In the end, whining is still annoying no matter how clever about it people are.

That's a better explanation than "liberals did it" which is ridiculous.

If that's your opinion..... Mine is they have used every platform to whine about this election that could possibly be used and now it's celebrity deaths. I find it stupid and classless. We lost a lot of great entertainers in 2016 and I just don't see the point of politicizing their deaths over a crappy election. They should be remembered and respected for their artistic contributions and nothing less.

If you think this is a new thing, you should pay attention more.

Sadly, people using deaths to score points over groups with political views they don't like is not exactly unheard of.

Yeah it's nothing new. Heck, just look at the past 2 presidential elections in my country.

Back on topic, people will probably bash me for this but I haven't watched Star Wars Episode 7 and Rogue One yet :nervous::ouch: because of this news I'll definitely have to catch up on Star Wars.

All my thoughts, prayers and condolences are with the family during this unbelievably difficult time for them. :(

Damn, that's pretty sad.

Though tbh, if Debbie's death wasn't hot on the heels of Carrie's, I probably wouldn't find it all that sad... 84's a ripe old age, she had a full life.
