Censored Sponsors?

bud light commercials throughout the super bowl are fine but we cant have authentic genuine vehicles in the game, PD dropped the ball yet again, I thought this was a simulation racing game.. appearantly its just BS, thanks PD, Morons!

So, to sum up, we're banned from enjoying the sheer unadulterated thrill of driving a Group B rally car sponsored by a heavy licquor company because parents can't correctly educate their kids. Hmmm. Law's against this aren't in place in my country, in fact alcohol and cigarrete advertisement is seen almost everywhere and yet I've grown to be a responsible lad and I never drank a sip or tasted smoke until I was about 18. Good parents, that what saves children from being addicted, not ruining it for car fans and turning this:

And obviously forgetting this:

I do agree that censoring sponsors ruins the authenticity of race cars, but it's done to prevent children from thinking that cigarettes or alcohol are cool because they're featured on cars in GT5. Unfortunately, there are a lot of incompetent parents who can't raise their children properly and are looking to blame everyone else, including videogame companies. PD/Sony are just trying to avoid those types of lawsuits.

IMO, trying to protect kids from alcohol and tobacco by censoring the branding in video games is like trying to stop a leaky roof with tissue paper. Many kids' parents smoke and/or drink to some degree. Convenience stores are full of cigarette ads (and beer too, in many cases). Every sports event on TV is full of beer commercials. A significant number of the cars at any NASCAR event have The Dreaded Vice Branding. It's impossible to insulate kids from this stuff.

👍 I think it's idiotic that they are forced to censor what goes into a simulator. Yes it's a video game and may be played by "kids", but GT5 should be exempt since they are recreating the same real world environments that those kids are exposed to anyway. If the ad in question can be aired on national television without censorship then a video game should be able to have it uncensored as well. :ouch:

The parental advisory panel can suck it.

It's not PD's fault for omitting vice ads...

All the motor racing DVD's i have are given an 'E' classification (Exempt in the UK) as the older race cars carry loads of Alcohol and Tobacco sponsorship, not to mention the the signs on the sides of the race tracks. I agree, GT5 should be given an exempt classification for the same reason.

If the people who classify the games heard some of the stuff that comes over the headsets online, GT5 would be classified as 18+ straight away!

I've always thought the ban on tobacco/alcohol advertising was stupid anyway. Oh wow, theres a car that says Marlboro on it, i'm going to go buy some cigarettes now. If you already smoke it may remind you to go buy some, but you really have to be a bit stupid to be encouraged to do it by an advert!

Of course seeing a tobacco brand ONCE doesn't make you decide to go out and buy cigarettes. Look at the bigger picture, it's constant re-enforcement of the brand as glamourous that does the damage.

Young children are impressionable. What little boy doesn't see an awesome racing car and say "Wow!". As he has the image of amazing cars (along with cigarette branding) burned into his subconcious thousands of times throughout his childhood, he builds a positive association with the brand. He doesn't see the brand as negative or harmful, he associates it with something he likes.

Fact of the matter is the ban on ALL forms of tobacco advertising in the UK is working - smoking rates are falling drastically. Yeah, it will also be related to increased taxes making the habit too expensive but don't underestimate the power of advertising.

Think of it another way: would tobacco companies spend all that money on sponsoring sporting events for year after year if it didn't work?

I'm glad of the effect the advertising ban is having.

This is coming from someone who has now smoked for over 20 years by the way.

I'm pretty sure it's nothing to do with censorship but all to do with lisences, remember all of the GT4 cars sponshorships were orginally sanctioned (for the game) 6 years ago.

I completely understand changing logos for copywrite reasons and the tobacco / alcohol issue, but this one baffles me.
In the picture posted above, the Citroen Xsara has 'OZ Racing' logos on the front bumper, under the Michelin stickers. Yet the OZ Racing logos have been changed on the Audi R8 '01 Race Car?!?

This makes absolutely no sense.

I've also noticed that all of the Lemans tags have been changed to PD and GT stickers, as can also be seen on the Audi R8 above. They were left off the Peugeot 908 completely.

It's a shame, Warsteiner is some really good beer... ;)
+1 👍
Warsteiner is great beer!

And I also noticed why they also took the Phillips logo off on the Renault 5 GrB?

You mean Sony couldn't convince a competing brand of electronics to let them put their log in a game that plays on a Sony product? For all we know those dirty bastages at Sony would gimp the car! Because Sony's totally the dev's.

One of those no way in hell kind of things. If Phillips did allow it I'd be surprised.

Scroll up a bit and take a close look at the Audi R8... You will see "Panasonic" on the side of it, so its not such a far fetched idea.
