So will someone create some kind of awards for some of the best and worst Cheap Cockpit Alternatives?

ha!, the problem here for me is everything , gt force pro is way too much for me and my lotus elise wheel is **** because it only turns 90 degrees and when the car starts to slide i am screwed , the main prob is the gt force pro does anyone know were you can get a cheap gt force pro? i need answers on this one!:( :( :(

Buy it on 'eBay'. Probably the cheapest place you'll find it. I got my my G25 for less than $200 there. sorry for the super-late response. you've probably already bought one by now...

Yeah, nice design there radese. How about lowering the shifter? So it will feel more like sports car setup and not a minivan setup.

haha... NoxNoctis Umbra is right. I can just imagine it now: "introducing the all-new Playseat mini-van" maybe work out something so you can attach it to the seat or just make a shelf to lower the shifter some.

yeah that's weird. ive never seen a shifter mounted so high. maybe there's a flappy-paddle gear box as well? it can't* be comfortable driving. and i looked and that's the only shifting option.:boggled:

I don't think there is one for this car.

The only way to shift gears is when you drive like a grandomom facing 10cm away from steering wheel.

Would this work??

I'm after a more sturdy table for my G25 after nearly snapped my laptop table last night!!!

EDIT - done some investigating on this one and i reckon i'll have to bolt some wood under the plastic so the g25 will clamp on better but from what i've read it looks sturdy enough. The video on some site shows someone putting a full plastic water bottle off one of those water coolers on it and it didn't budge an inch.

Not everyone gangsta leans when they drive, the position is actually quite great Having been in one of those up close in person i can say if you're sitting properly in a CGT then the shifter position if perfect as the throws are very short from each gear. Also the car is very low and short, shorter than say a corvette so the high position actually feels right when you're sitting in it.

And so does the Type-R Civic (not the current...), and it's quite easy to use and falls into hand.

Of course as you say, you can't "gangsta lean", cruising with one arm stretched all the way to the wheel and he other hand on the lever. If that's important when choosing a car then these are not good choices :)

just got a laptop table from Ikea
it is perfect!
and it is called Dave :P
ill get some pics up soon

Plans are here:
http://www.cnw.com/~lavinrac/carseat/chairplans.jpg

I have started work on a new front half of my seat, however, as the old front half fit perfect for the madcatz wheel, but when i bought my Logitech DFP, it didnt fit well at all.

I love the cockpit but all i need to know is how you mounted the rocker. i had originally planned to use a flat-bottomed chair but found a nice rocker at a great price. could you give me a walk through. (btw, i did see you sketch-up of the whole rig but still am not sure how you did the chair.)

Thanks!!

here is my "cheap alternative"

old side table pulled out the drawer and broke the bottom support out that held the drawer up...

my car is currently un-finished, i came upon a Bride Vios III low max seat to use while my car isnt running, - by no means cheap here, but any car seat will work, when my car is done and the Bride is in there, i just use a seat out of an olds alero.. lol

Well i've been using it for a couple of weeks and unfortunately its just not sturdy enough. It's passable but for races where you need to give the wheel a good thrashing the table moves and bends.

Just gave in and ordered a wheelstand pro. Hopefully it's more sturdy than this.

Here's mine.

Cost:
2" PVC, pipes and joints, glued - $60
MDF wood, quarter to half inch - leftover scrap
Salvaged Integra seat (I believe)- $17
Plastic paint - $10
Screws, nuts, bolts- $15
Logitech gear G25 - $240

Specs:
Overall - 30" wide, 4'-6" long

Adjustments:
Head rest
Seat backrest reclines
Seat locks foward or back
Tilt wheel
Shifter repositioning
Pedals are permanent

Overall enjoyment: 95%
The steering wheel mount does have little flex to it but does add to the feedback. Switching from joypad to this cut 4 seconds off my time in game play.

Nice PVC setup!
Before I wanted to create one, and paint it GT theme, read and blue.. Or really nice glossy WHITE!
I like it!
I know it would be more work for you, but you should make some holes in the PVC for the cables to hide ;)

As well would it be cool to have 1 inch holes for the shifter tube? I guess it will become less rigid, but will make it look like its metal or steel.

Not everyone gangsta leans when they drive

Just to make it clear, I am not one of the gansta lean when I drive. ;)
And I actually set in MINIvan setup like that, It was automatic, but when I reach for the shifter.. yeah it was comfortable! 👍

Does anyone have idea on how to make the the PlaySetas Evolution Pedal support even sturdier? I hear when G25 has BRAE MOD, the EVO chair flexes when pressing the brake to the limit. How can I make it more sturdy? What should I buy? where should I drill? I have some idea, but I would like to make it pretty as well. Thanks

Here is how it looks like..

Appreciate the response. Still contemplating the holes to hide wires only, otherwise to many of them will compromise rigidy.

Forgot to mention the visual media I'm using with the race seat, currently using a 27 CRT but working a 'man cave' in the garage using a DIY 720p projector (shown below) and a 120" screen. What I uploaded@ youtube when I had the projector in the house.

I'm really liking your design on the whole thing. Would it be possible for you to post some close-up shots of how you mounted the platform for the steering wheel and the shifter? Maybe if it was mounted directly on top of the frame, it may have been a bit more stable than what you described, but it would sacrifice height positioning. Overall, it's still a great build; I'd like to see if I can replicate it somehow.

Sure :)

The steering platform is hinged off on a 2” pvc ‘T’ joint with a 3/8’s, 8” long bolt, washers and a wing nut. The ‘T’ joint has pvc caps glued on both ends that I drilled on center for the bolt to go through the platform and joint. Mind you all these pvc pieces were found at the hardware store. On front of the platform you can see a ‘U’ bolt that is long enough to go thru the platform above and tightened with 2 wing nuts. I found scavenged rubber spacers to place between the frame and the platform but another set of nut’s and washers can be place there to adjust for tilt. So, all together it’s a matter of loosening the 8” bolt/wing nut and adjusting the 2 wing nuts/nuts to angle. The little flex I mentioned earlier about is really unnoticeable while gaming. It's just that I refrain from leaning on the wheel or the mount while climbing in or out of the cockpit as you would with a regular vehicle.

The shifter is basically ½” MDF wood tightened onto the pvc frame with 3/8’s, 2 ¼” wide automotive exhaust ‘U’ bolts that are tightened with wing nuts. The mount where the shifter sits on is screwed/glued at a right angle onto the MDF wood, see pictures. So, it’s a matter of loosening up the 4 wing nuts on the ‘U’ bolts and sliding the mount up or down for adjustment.
