China

While they aren't saying this is China, it sure seems like this is probably related to last week's balloon downing along with the downing on Friday:

Could be Russia trying to provoke the US/Canada into something.

Why couldn't Canadian units do it on their own?
They don't have F-22's, which were designed to fly high and fast, although the object over Canada was only flying at 40,000 ft which should be in the reach of CF-18's.

This thread hasn't been getting a lot of attention despite a lot of things going on. I don't blame any of you - it's a pretty scary situation. The newest development is indicative of a protential problem.

the USAF's NGAD program has question marks overhead. Just a couple days ago, an AF chief did not provide the answers anybody expected when asked about program progress. The deadline for contract awards is basically right now, but he said they're still deliberating and dealing with "difficult decisions". The problem here isn't necessarily the program itself, it is other programs, and the reasons those programs exist, as outlined in this video.

Biggest problem? The China situation is escalating so quickly, and necessary US infrastructure is so far behind them in development, that the military is having to sacrifice next-gen programs to divert money toward things they needed yesterday, like four entirely new bases in the Phillipines. This could indicate that the US expects these bases and other immediate programs to be needed very soon, i.e. they expect conflict to break out sooner than later and infrastructure needs to take top priority. I'm just a dude in a chair but at this point I think and all-out multi-national war could break out in the SCS within five years. The Air Force is shifting gears right now to favor drone swarms and loyal wingmen attached to current platforms which means they need numerical advantage as quickly as possible. This shift toward numerical advantage is worrisome because it means the US military understands just how dominant China's industrial capacity is and their mezmerizing ability to create numerical advantage. All of our Pacific allies combined coudln't out-produce China.

There have been several serious things that have happened in the SCS recently, notably that the Chinese Coast Guard has had a physical row with the Phillipines Navy and Coast Guard several days ago. The situation isn't quite as large-scale as most news agencies made it seem - turns out, the confrontation took place in inflatable skiffs as the Filipino soldiers were attempting to deliver supplies inside the Second Thomas Shoal to their beached ship which is constantly manned. Chinese sciffed rammed the Phillipines boats, seized all the supplies, and one Filipino soldier lost a finger. There is a photo of a Chinese soldier aiming an axe toward the Filipino soldiers.

The Chinese also damaged the Phillipine vessels.

This is becoming commonplace and it's ridiculous because the Second Thomas Shoal is within the Phillipines 200nm EEZ. The only parts of any island groups inside the SCS which are in China's EEZ are the northern half othe Paracel islands, while the vast majority of the other islands, including the Spratly Islands, are split between the Phillipines, Malaysia, Brunei, and Vietnam. While all these countries have submitted various claims to the UN for arbitration, China simply ignores all these UN rules altogether. It's create a mad rush where all the other countries have had to adopt China's tactics to compete with the lowest bidder.

In other news, China is literally occupying sovereign territory of Bhutan which obviously implicates India.

China's salami tactics are going to lead to a world war. I give it ten years. It'll start in the SCS and eventually involve all countries along the Pacific, including a war between the Koreas, and bring India against China, which will give Russia an opportunity to attack NATO as the US's forces will be split, and Iran and their proxies will go wild, Israel in Lebanon which may implicate Cyprus now as well. Venezuela will be effectively untouchable in Guyana unless the Brits can do something about that. I ain't no fun.

DAMMIT...I hate when people articulate world problems in a sensible, highly digestible fashion that requires me to think about them. Argh.🤣

True story though, all of it. There are deeply concerning issues swirling around the world and I share your fear of global outbreak...what do we do about it? Serious question, too, as most who read that will ask the same question: "What am I supposed to do about it?" I think it's a fair question given how insignificant an individual can feel when we're but one voice against the landscape of global warfare.

Maybe the most obvious response here (US) would be to vote. Problem is, when you say 'vote' we think of one thing and that's the presidential one. Nobody thinks about local, which is where it all starts. Even the greatest entanglements of vines can be thwarted when you focus on the roots. Get out there and get involved but, most importantly, get in the know about who you vote for.

Won't lie, this all scares the 💩 outta me. How do I/we make things better for our kids and fellow humans? I'm open to suggestion. Not looking to go all "The Walking Dead" on it and disappear into the hillside, but will if I have to.😁

Another great suggestion is exactly what you did here...keep talking about it. Absolutely nothing changes when it's forgotten.

Step 1 is elect leaders who listen to reason. I think you know what I'm talking about lol.

Besides that's there's nothing we can do. Live our lives, pay our bills, have fun. All this stuff is way above our pay grade.

Its the same everywhere.
People not voting are giving their vote to every party they didnt want, which multiplies their voting power in a bad way.
My younger sibling didnt vote last time "I dont see a reason, doesnt change anything." - well yes, with an attitude like that it is not a surprise the AfD (German literal Nazi Party) has seen such a surge.

I caught a headline or two about some of the stuff going on over there. Won't pretend to know what I'm talking about or truly understand but, and on the surface, it sure seems similar to some radicalization efforts we've got on our soil. Sounds to be as welcome there as it is here, too.

I think a lot of the sway that's been enacted to move the needle in the wrong direction comes down to one thing: truth. Be it a "lack-of" that is enabling the, quite honestly, brainwashing of millions of people -OR- the "presence of" that infuriates the rest that don't drink the Kool-Aid. Against my better judgement, I tried THIS out the other day. Walking the dog through the neighborhood I hear several folks gathered (also with/walking dogs) spout "Now they expect us to believe that <Person A> doesn't like the <thing>!" followed by a bunch of "yeah, rights!", as is typical. Since I live on the other side of the neighborhood, I decided to chime in "Love the Frenchie! Hey, couldn't help but hear y'all...you do realize that <Person A> called them a bunch of suckers and losers, right?" It was interesting to see the response, even more interesting that they were willing to have a conversation about it. Not gonna fool myself into thinking I changed someone's mind as I'm confident I didn't. But I did make them think about it for a minute. I'll take it.

Point being, being on different sides of the political spectrum doesn't immediately quash the opportunity for conversation. Some people really just don't know this stuff. Sad that I can't recommend for people to try, but I can't. If you're willing to take the chance, though, know that it's not 100% guaranteed to be a waste of time...maybe only, like, %99.99999.🤣

Do I think there's anything we can do about it? Short-term, no. That doesn't mean a longer-term solution isn't viable, though. For instance, on our side we really, Really, REALLY need to bring back and leverage the Fairness Doctrine. Not gonna peel it apart here, but it's repeal (1987) gave birth to the rise of the highly politicized talk world that has become a cesspool of lies, deception and self promotion, all at Democracy's expense. This was an FCC thing that ensured alternate viewpoints on controversial social issues were given equal time. You couldn't say something ridiculous in an echo chamber, there had to be a counter. If you didn't, you risked your broadcasting license. You can scam your viewers for more money when you get sued...not gonna help if you can't broadcast, tho.👍
