That would be mine. The theme wasn't the first corner, it was any point from the grid to the first corner. Those tail lights are cars braking for the first turn. The whole point of a theme is to interpret it how you like, this is an artistic competition not a place to document racing!

I have to admit, listening to the CONSTANT complaining and bickering, whether it be why people's photos didn't get chosen, or why other peoples photos were chosen, or why a certain shot is winning, or the other 500 complaints, has been a 100% turn off for me. As much as I love photomode and the competitions that go with them, I don't think I'm going to enter anymore. I was hoping the competitions would be more fun than the days of GT4 but honestly to me, its been the complete opposite. So I'll just stick to gallery updates and then drop in my votes for the weekly competitions.

I mean no disrespect, and I understand it's up to the photographer's interpretation, but the fact that your photo appears as though it could have been taken anywhere is obviously rubbing several people the wrong way. I personally feel it's not representative of the theme in a way where if showcased alone as a PMC winner, one could derive why it won apart from it simply being a good photograph—let alone what the theme was.

That being said, it was up to the judge whether or not your photo made the cut, and it did. So maybe everyone should blame Malc01 instead ... haha. Just kidding guys ... Folks really needn't take these things so seriously.

Cool, 2nd entry, 1st time through to the poll :D

I voted for the one with the taillights of the Ferrari. IMO the idea was the most original and performed really well as well.

I fear I may have touched off a firestorm with this one, sorry about that.

Congrats to everyone that made the poll, and good luck next week to everyone that didn't :)

woohoo, made it for the first time!
don't think it will win tho :)

 Poor Malc

To be fair I've also been guilty of having a moan at entries for not quite fitting the theme when Polifonic won the 2.0 with his F40 shot. To me, nothing about it was Top Gear inspired or related except the track it was taken on. But everyone's interpretation is different and that's what makes the polls so exciting. :)

Regarding my photo; I do see where you're coming from. It could have been taken anywhere, but I still feel that it symbolises that first corner rush quite well. I can't think of any other time in a race when the cars would be bunched up like that in such close proximity. At least that was my thought behind it. But thankyou to everyone who has given me feedback on the photo, it's much appreciated and I'm always eager to listen to what people have to say about my photos.

As a side note to anyone else, don't be afraid to criticize! Anyone with a half decent attitude towards these contests will take criticism in their stride and use it to improve. I know I do and it actually helps me to come back with better entries. This thread is a perfect example, people have given feedback and because of this I'll be making sure my entries fit the theme a bit better in the future. 👍

RetroGiant: Please try not to be too put off by it! I love seeing your contest entries!

I have a question for you Moglet. How did you get it to focus so well on the tailights that close and not mess up the color? I took a shot that was principally the same and then I saw the competition a week later and I went to upload it and the tailight seemed to be in good focus but the detail wasn't there. : / It looked like a standard car, I was using a miniture filter with a tad bit of darkness and a short focal length. How did you get it to focus in on it so well and kind of "blur" off in the distance?

I placed the camera further away from the car and zoomed in. This gives you a very quick fall off with the blur by using a high aperture (f3.0 or so would be good) but keeps the focused area sharp. The aperture and focal length sections of this thread explain it in more detail with example photos.

Also, the miniature filter should only really be used for miniature style shots! It blurs the top and bottom of the image regardless of where the focal point is and is designed to replicate this style of photography:

crossroads.jpg

Hence the 'miniature' name.

I've never said anything about not making a poll before, but I was really expecting to see my entry up there this time. Oh well, that's the way the cookie crumbles and there are a lot of great entries this week. I get the feeling I didn't pick the right continent of manufacture for this week's judge ;)

Or maybe my picture just sucked :D

Good luck to all, and it was a fun theme anyway :)

I am not in too...quiet dissapointed because my pic looks nearly like one that is in...ok....thats the way life goes...I don't wanna complain...I'll just try doing better next time...

There are really nice pics in... Good luck to all!

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat....
I didn't make it onto the poll again? Seriously, I swear I thought my photo was good enough for the poll... :(

it definitely looks better than 1/2 of the shots on the poll in my opinion, oh well... might as well get on with the next comp. :dunce:

I was even planning on voting for you.

Well my vote goes with the faded sports car (Nissan GT-R?) at the Monza chicane.
Awesome shot, but how on Earth did you manage to fade the car out???

thanks PedanticNerd, I appreciate your vote, as well as anyone else that votes for it, it's not my first attempt, but the first one that made the poll. It is a Nissan GT-R Spec V in an online race and I saved the replay went back, and noticed whoever was driving it must have made some erratic movement as made his car ghost. I am actually driving the Red Ferrari 430 Scuderia behind him, doing my best not to rammed in the back.

Ahh... sneaky :sly:
Well in that case it certainly captures the mad rush to the first corner! 👍

I was looking back through the comp. thread - there were far more than 40 poll-worthy pics this week! I don't think mine woulda made it even if I was the judge.

I really wanted to vote for Forgetful's entry, but in the end, Chromatic9's fit the theme better.

As to the 'tail-light picture', I figure, if your gonna push the boundaries of the rules/theme or go abstract, etc. it's gonna have to be outstanding. That one is pretty slick.

this. entirely. I don't even wanna read the polls anymore. just vote n leave. Because all it is is constant bickering about "oh why didn't I make it?"
we don't enter to please ourselves.
we enter to please a judge. and judge can cut whoever the hell he or she wants.
if you ahve an issue with that, then don't bother entering.
it sounds elitist, and it sounds harsh, yes.
but it's true.

guys like Moglet and others who try to do something a little off the wall for most themes, are trying to push it out of the box. they're trying to get something that you see and say "I didn't think I'd see that here".
piquing the ole' interest, is what they're doing.

on the off topic:
I can't say enough that I'm floored that my night at Nurburgring shot made it to the poll. that's nuts, in my opinion.
I figured it was a little bit crap, when viewed in the theme's context, to be quite honest. I'm not expecting a single vote, and I actually kinda hope I don't get any. there are other, far more deserving shots.

to be a little constructive:

there are at least 3 shots in this weeks poll that would've gotten my vote had there been more consistency in the content.
a good example?
the 787b and peugeot 905 on daytona.
now I realize that both of those cars may have done a race at daytona. the R92 did, at the very least, so group C cars did land at Daytona for a road race in the WSC every so often.

but when I see those 2 cars, I think 1991 Le Mans 24hr.
it's an awesome shot, and had my vote until I said "it's on daytona. . . " and the whole thing kinda fell apart. had it been on the first corner of La Sarthe, with th eMazda infront (as it placed) and the peugeot behind (being that the peug was the closest competior to the 787 in 91, that I recall) it woulda had my vote, at least. the whole thing would've made a collective amount of "sense", so to speak.

more than this is car choice.

there is a shot of a Ferrari p330 taking the outside line at grand valley versus an audi R8. again, a terrific shot.
but lacking in the "this makes sense" dpt. had that been a Mk 4 ford, or another car of similar vintage, that woulda been a real contender for my lowly 1 vote.
instead, I passed it over after viewing, since it simply didn't make sense for those 2 cars to be pictured together.

I'm not trying to be a douche. I'm simply saying, that I look for the content to make sense. the 2 Zagato race cars on Laguna seca?
yes maam. screams Monterey Historic to me.
the P330/4 leading a pack of 60's racers? at Monaco?
magic.

[sarcasm] Surely the only reason I didn't win is because my pic was right next to the shot that did. :nervous: [/sarcasm] :dopey: j/k

Great shot Chromatic9! Congrats!

Really, this was a tough week to decide on which shot to vote for. I hovered over Chrom's for a while, that's for sure. Great theme Malc01, and good job on the poll selection 👍
