Cockpit view: brilliant

Burammm
In GT5 I've never quite come to grips with the cockpit view. For some reason it always tends to block the most important parts of the view and feels clunky and unnatural.

However, in Shift 2 the cockpit view is for me by far the most natural and useful way to drive (followed by helmet cam and bumper cam). I can't quite put my finger on what makes it so great, but in Shift 2 I never even consciously think about the camera and the view while driving; it just works.

Great job by SMS. They certainly seem to know a thing or two about making a fun racing game.

Best cockpit view in any racer!

It's a shame Helmet cam is too far away as it restricts your view too much...would love to see a view next year that combines the looking of the driver but in cockpit cam.

Maybe it's the lighting or something? GT5 seems to make it look like a cutout of the interior is placed over your field of view, while Shift seems to make it look more natural.

I'm not quite sure what it is, but I agree with you.

The interior view is indeed excellent. I dont care much for the head tracking interior view so I just use the regular interior view. Once I got rid of that head tracking view, the game was much more enjoyable.

It is the best. I'm trying to get used to the helmet cam. Too bad they sort of messed up the regular cam. You sit way too close when the first Shift was just about perfect. They made the wrong decision. At least it does not feel as stupid as how Forza 3 did it.

-There are 2 views in Shift 2
1. Cockpit view with n(sits closer to windshield)
2. Helmet cam view with headtracking (further back from windshield)

-In Forza 3 you can adjust how close or how far you sat away from the windshield. It was a tricky setting but it was there.

Shift 2 easily has the best looking interiors no doubt about that. The reflections of the top of the dash off the windshield look amazing. Plus you can actually see the glass on each gauge inside the car and those also reflect light. Just amazing. :dopey:

I have the xbox 360 version. I don't have #2 you posted above. Are you sure? What version do you have?

I have the 360 version.
Are you sure you dont have it? As you approach the corner the screen will look to the apex. My game defaulted to #2 and I didnt like it at all. Luckily later in the game somehow the #1 option magically unlocked. I wonder if it depends on the car??? Try some different cars and see if you get different views.

I love the idea of the helmet came but I can't drive fro crap like that..lol

I have not tried the cockpit view, I've been racing in the hood view .

I'll have to get it another try

360 version.
-There are 3 interior views in Shift 2. Again these 3 views might only be available in certain cars because I did NOT have all 3 views when I started playing the game. I can take pics tonight if necessary.

1. Cockpit view with no head tracking (sits closer to windshield)
2. Cockpit view with headtracking (further back from windshield) *this was the default view when I started the game*
3. Helmet cam
Yes, please take pics. It would be very interesting. This is the first time anyone said there are 3 interiors views (excluding on modded pc versions). Personally, I like the cockpit view with no headtracking, but ideally, I would like it further back (showing more of the cockpit) like it was in Shift 1.

Ok I will take pics tonight when I get into the game. Probably get the pics posted tomorrow. The most strange part is that the game defaulted to #2 and then later all of a sudden #1 was was in the game. And thanfully because I did not like the #2 view at all with the headtracking.

CB- Hello!

Check what cars this is on, I only have the two, cockpit and helmet cam.

Are you sure it's not the helmet cam on the retro cars, 'cause the helmet chages to ye olde style, no borders around the screen, looks like the cockpit view and still looks to apex.

I currently drive these 4 vehicles and have the 3 cockpit views for at least 3 out of 4 cars.
1. Audi TT Quatro D Class
2. Subaru Impreza C Class
3. GT500 Mustang C class (muscle races)
4. Default drift car D class

I much prefer the Non-headtracking view. The headtracking often disorientates me when i am trying to aim for that apex.

Distance settings for the cockpit would be nice, but fortunately, it was just the right setting for me.

I also like how you can look up and down and not just left/right like in GT5.

The main reason I want the non-headtracking cockpit view to move further back is so that I can see the full rearview mirror and the driver side-mirror.

The 2nd reason is to admire more of the detailed cockpit, switches, etc.

And the 3rd reason is to have a wider FOV to see the cars beside me. However, eventhough the helmet view sees more of the cockpit, the outsaide FOV is the same as the regular cockpit view (i.e. you only see more inside the car, but you the FOV outside is still the same).

I agree with you. I dont like the head tracking but the non head tracking view is too far forward. I cant see my rear view mirro or my side mirrors. So its a lose lose situation for me either way. Regardless I use the non head tracking cockpit view any chance I can get. I dont like the helmet cam much either so I dont use it.

I really like the helmet cam. Didn't think I was going to first, but after a couple hours of using it, I started to prefer it over the others. Makes the racing even more intense 👍

Good point about the "retro" cars with open helmets.

I have only seen 2 interior views (cockpit and helmet) and I am at level 20. To be fair, I didn't try all the cars nor did I flicker through the different views to see if there is a 3rd interior view. I just assumed there were 2 only, and left it at that.

I'll have to try the cars mentioned to see for myself. Can anyone else confirm a 3rd interior view with the cars mentioned?

Me too, I absolutely love it. But one of the biggest reasons I stuck with it is because like CB said, the normal one is too close. They changed the FOV.

But the helmet cam is a great aid at times too, when it starts panning, that's a suggested braking point. I just like the way it flows.

I find myself noticing and being much more conscious of how my eyes and head really do move when driving my real car now. Funny.

I am not a cockpit racer but I agree that its alot better than GT5. I do race in cockpit from time to time. Now helmet cam is a different story. I don't care for it. It throws me way off. As the helmet turns I forget that its the head and not my car tuning and I go into the corners with more understeer than I want. Nice concept but its not for me.

I like the hood cam the most. Alooooot better than GT5's roof cam. I have never seen anyone legally driver down the street with their head sticking out of the sun roof to view were they are going.

It's a japanese thing 👍

UPDATE ABOUT VIEWS!

I stand corrected. There are indeed only 2 cockpit views. I took pics but everyone already knows what these views look like so no sense in posting.

1. Inside view no headtracking (closer to windshield)
2. Helmet Cam view with headtracking (further from windshield)
