Cockpit view = waste of time...?

This is just something that crossed my mind the other day...

I was playing GT4 on my shoddy homebuilt driving rig, with my TV on its stand in front of me. I had it in bumper cam - as always - and I got to thinking how perfectly realistic it was. If I wanted to look at the wheel and my hands, I'd look slightly down, and if I wanted to see the road ahead I would look up again. I have it set up like that, for the most realistic experience.

And then, I thought about GT5P. I've never played it, but I have seen screenshots on the web of the cockpit view. And it just struck me how unrealistic it would be while using a wheel.

As I said, my wheel is the perfect height in front of myself and the screen, so it's like a real car. When I get GT5 proper, though, I would have one that's projected right in front of me. Kazunori, frankly, is wasting all this time modelling the interior views, etc. etc., when all we really need is a bit of bonnet in front of us.

Pros and cons, ladies and gentlemen:

Cons:

- More memory
- Possible lag, possibly reducing number of cars. It has to render not only the highly detailed cockpit, and pointless wheel and hands, but the entire HD outside world FOUR TIMES, i.e main view and mirrors.
- Unrealistic if using a wheel
- Time dedicated to perfecting driver hands animation, modelling interiors, etc. etc. could be better spent on improving what needs to be improved.
- The driver hands are having trouble being perfected anyway. They did it in GT4 - albeit from an external view - but can't do it in GT5P's cockpit view, for some reason. The wheel only turns, like, 200 degrees, and this could be very disorientating of using a 900 degree wheel. For me, anyway.
- Loss of sense of speed.
- Lower visibility.

Pros:

- A bit more realistic for gamepad users.
- Something to look at... a little extra.

Those are the pros and cons in my own opinion, anyway.

But, my point is, why render all the steering wheel and hand animations when you have the wheel - and the most realistic hand animations ever - right in front of you? I understand that cockpit rendering is still useful, if you need to look to the side, for example. But all we really need is a POV that shows maybe a little of the top of the dash, and the bonnet in front of us, from behind a windscreen. Because we already have the wheel and hands in front of us.

Opinions?

You do raise a point, and I do use the bumper cam as well, even now in GT5P, but, they have the cockpit view in there to satisfy all customers. Forza 2 got criticized for not having the cockpit view, and now they have it in. Some people just like the view, realistic or not, they probably love to see the leather interior, or the badge on the steering wheel. If GT5 loses the cockpit view, as much as it will decrease space, and increase game performance, it's just a step backwards.

Here we go again! I didn't know every car had a G25/DFGT for a steering wheel. 💡

I think it's very nice that PD have modeled the interior for every car - it gives each car a little more character and unique flavor. :D

Besides, maybe you should wait until you have actually played the game to pass final judgement? ;)

exactly my words!

In GT4 i obviously only used the bumper cam, but in GT5P i am only using the Cockpit view.

I dont pay attention to the In Game wheel, i focus on the road and thats it.
I just love cockpit view because it DOES add more realism. Ok you are right, the 200 degree rotation may be sometimes confusing but if you focus on the track, you will not notice it anyways.

Plus when using bumper cam, your practically sitting in the middle of the car and too low = unrealistic unless youre in a single seater (but then your still too low)

I do have to say, that when i played SuperCar Challenge they had 2 types of Cockpit view.

One just like in GT5P and the other was just where the steering wheel was and that was the most realistic view!!
If PD could copy that view from SCC then that would be a big 👍

Chris

If just matched hand movement 1:1 to steering wheel game controller movement, i would not want anything else changed on interior view.

bro how could u say no to cockpit view and interior modelling...:S

i say its an option and should stay one

I didn't say I was opposed to a cockpit view. Far from it. I was just saying how all we really needed was a view of the bonnet through the windscreen, and maybe some interior modelling for looking left/right, rather than all the other complex modelling for driver hands, steering wheel, etc.

Indeed.

Personally me interior view is the greatest thing added. If I had to choose between 16 car races, damage and weather... or Cockpit views (with 6 car races and none of the others) I would still take cockpit view.

Cockpit view is fantastic, although on time trials i go straight to bumper cam, the novelty never wears off. I like it alot :)

Yes, Some might slam my lack of realism but if I can't see the car then I'm not as confident. Lol.

I gotta say I am not a huge fan of the cockpit view. I am unable to go fast with it, I don't know why, but I just cannot match my usual times with the interior view as I can the bumper view.

And there's always online racing.... I find it impossible to race online with others with the cockpit view, I can't see what's around me like I can with the bumper cam.

i prefer bumper cam too its wide open cam...While i am driving in Cockpit view. I cant see anything on the road..I must look forawrd to sıde mirrors

I race in no view other than cockpit, I love that view and am deeply thankful PD modelled it with such detail.

Not all of us use a stearing wheel so having a cockpit view is a great experience and i use it often, its not a waste of time, there are several driving views to suit everyones needs... yours is bumper cam because you have a wheel.. etc

Can't say I notice the hands, I'm usually watching the road.

Best addition from GT4 to GT5P by miles.

What they said!👍

hm the statements in the OP dont mesh with what i have experienced in gt5p.

asides from the extra dev time i see no reason not to have a cockpit view its very slick in gt5p.

I dont own GT5P or a PS3, however I do have a G25 and play many different PC sims. I always race in cockpit view. From car to car and game to game I'll change my seat positions or field of view, but I always go for the cockpit view. If GT5 didn't have a cockpit view I wouldn't even be considering wasting $700AUD on a PS3 to play it.

I'd like to add that the cockpit view doesn't impact game performance. Only your cockpit is rendered, wich is (workload wise) worth about a half car.
