If you do not prefer to do any one of these, VOTE NO

If you do prefer to do all of these, VOTE YES

-I use cockpit view
-I don't use driver aids except ABS (sometimes)
-I prefer racing with heavy damage (mechanical)
-I prefer racing with tire wear on
-I race as if it was my own (or my racing teams) car in real life (clean)
-I try to use "proper" tires (a.k.a. I use tires with appropriate grip levels for the car being simulated)

Keep in mind, this is asking for your preference. I may be using the word dedicated improperly as a result. Meaning that you don't have to vote no if you occasionally do things a little differently when circumstances demand it.

HOWEVER, there is no inbetween answer for a reason, so don't say "I can't vote because I like to do ______ but not _____"

Either you prefer to do these things or not.

This is simply the definition of the question I'm asking. There is no "right" way of playing GT5.

I'm just curious how many people in the community are like me and enjoy to drive/race as realistically as possible in this sim.

This is not a debate, and there is no wrong answer (except undecided).

GT5 is only a sim if you treat it like one.

I can't answer the poll. I use third person view, but I drive clean, I don't use aids, and I prefer tire wear.

I use cockpit view, I sometimes use some aids depending on the car, I race clean, and I prefer to race with tyre/fuel wear on. I don't like mechanical damage, however.

I do everything stated in the OP except I use bumper cam instead of cockpit cam. I suppose this makes me an arcade racer. :)

I try to make this game as realistic as possible. Cockpit view. Tire wear. Heavy damage. I always add 73 kilos (160 lbs) for driver weight. I use appropriate tires for the car/race that I'm in. For example, if I enter a race with a very lightly upgraded '07 BMW M3 with just a height adjustable sports suspension, I'll use sport hard (I think of sport hard as the stock tire an M3 would come with IRL) or sport medium (I think of sport medium as a tire someone would put on their car IRL if they intend to use their car as a daily driver but also want to drive it hard on a track day at their local track).

I will use aids though. If I have comfort tires or even sport hard tires sometimes, I will leave TC on at 3 or 4 to simulate the factory traction control that's found on most cars IRL nowadays. ABS is always on 5 on my street cars because u can't turn ABS off in real car that has ABS. Most cars have ABS nowadays.

If I'm in a racecar that I know uses TC, I use it. For example, the RM Corvette ZR1. I tune that car as close to ALMS/WEC specs as possible. They allow traction control in those series so I use it. If I'm driving one of my NASCAR stock cars or my Ferrari F2010 Formula 1 car, I don't use any aids at all as those series don't allow the use of those things.

Lately, I've been racing in arcade mode a lot. With the AI set to their most aggressive setting and choosing a car that will make the game put 15 very capable cars against you, arcade races are a lot of fun. I've been running 20 lap races on tracks like Spa and Monza with cars around the 500-515PP range on sport hard or sport mediums and I've had some super fun races. Races that I'll be battling the same car for a 2 or 3 laps before I can make a clean pass, only to have a 2, 3 or 4 lap battle with the next car in the running order.

If you try to run the races as realistic and as clean as possible, it's a lot of fun.

I'm just curious how many people in the community are like me and are fully committed to driving/racing realistically.

If you use cockpit view, don't use driver aids except ABS sometimes, use proper tires (or at least the tires the car came with), prefer racing with heavy damage, prefer racing with tire wear on, and if you race as if it was real life (clean), then vote yes.

If you said no to any of those, please vote no

GT5 is only a sim if you treat it like one. I for one, prefer sim racing to arcade racing. I believe it's much more rewarding. I hope other people feel the same way, although I have a feeling a lot of those people are probably racing on the PC now

You're not going to get a good response with that pole because it is way to broad. The cockpit view is a killer.

I personally dislike cockpit view because I can't see my mirrors, and in a race that is "realistic" a driver needs mirrors. And the driving position is wack in some cars.

ABS ON is Sim??? At last check many racing classes have banned ABS and many have proven the ABS in this game isn't really just "ABS" but it is also a stability control. IMHO ABS off is much closer to "simulation" than traction control being used ( And I hate TC ).

Now "proper tires" is a very ambiguous term, and could be taken in may ways. Truthfully GT5 don't have "proper tires" it has road "similar" tires (CH-CS), semi-slick tires (SH-SS), and race tires. All that may or may not mirror real life. I think every car in GT5 comes with upgraded tires stock. Most no-supercars should have CH or CS.
Some tire information.

I would answer no if “I race dirty” wasn’t in there.
400PP, racing softs and SRF!
The perfect combination for running side by side through the twisties at Eiger.

That's why they allow you to look left and right.

I hate TC as well, but ABS isn't cut and dry. That's why I wrote sometimes

Most supercars should only be using comfort soft tires at most because most don't have semi-slicks, and if you compare the maximum lateral G's of almost every supercar in GT5 to it's real life counterpart, almost every one of them will have comfort soft producing the most accurate results. There was a guy (JDM-something, can't remember) who did a very in depth look into the levels of tire grip in GT5 and used in game vs real life stats to figure out which tires belong on which cars, and almost no road cars should even use sports hard. Just look at lap times at top gear or the ring. Even average drivers can destroy the real life times with sports hards on.

But like I said, I don't want this to turn into a debate

I was trying to say that almost all (I'm leaving room) cars should be on CM or lower. A SH pulls over 1G so that is a very high performance tire.

Well, hood view for me is the most "realistic". When I'm driving a car I'm not looking at the frame around the window, I'm looking through the window and I generally only see the hood. Still I have the mirror problem with both views so I only us them for fun in time trials.

Good luck with the poll but I figure it will turn into a debate. Realism has room for interpretation in this game.

it definitely means you're not committed to simulating real racing. Can't drive a real car from the front bumper.

I use it because it's quicker and I'm less likely to hit anyone. In real life you would be able to subtly glance left and right and use your peripheral vision to know where other racers are.

Do you use a car seat ? Do you have a triple monitor setup ? Do you race with a crash helmet on ? If not you're not committed to simulating real racing. Can't drive a car from the sofa or without a crash helmet.

I feel it's a bit unfair to lump everyone who doesn't use cockpit cam into some sort of uncommitted group of amateurs. Many use it as it minimises the risk of hitting other drivers which is the main concern when racing others.

Why not? Isn't that the point of a forum?

Don't take this the wrong way but you seem to just want to show everyone how "pro" you are.

I think the term 'realistic racing' is very loose. Different people have different meanings for it. What you consider realistic may not be to someone else, and that is what is creating conflict in this thread.

The poll seems to me to be very biased and one sided. According to the poll and OP, you either drive like the Stig or you drive like a 10 year old in an X2010. To me, and this is only my opinion, the OP is accusing people of not driving perfectly simply because they think they do.

This is only my opinion though.

If they allowed us to use the PSEye throughout all the game modes, I think more people would use the Cockpit cam. I for one would use it more but it's a pain to turn the wheel and reach for a button at the same time. So more realistically, I try to keep my hands on the wheel with exception of shifter.

I use the bumper cam, it keeps me nice and close and helps with reaction times. If I'm doing the seasonals, I use the Cockpit view. Main reason being that it's never a really close, nose to nose, race, so you don't really have to worry about surroundings as much.

For everything else, I drive with no aides, at all. I run proper tires, and use the clutch at all times (even though not modeled properly). I race very clean and fair, no unfair advantages like weight reductions, turbos or engine replacements, only removable parts to keep within PP. To be honest, I think I'm VERY good on the track.....according to you I'm a noob!

Like others mentioned, the poll is a bit biased. As wolfdragon97 said, you make it seem like we're either drive like a pro or we're a kid. Not cool!

Absolutely agree 100%.

To go with this, all you need to do in real life to be able tell where another racer is, is to locate them by listening to their engine and glancing at the mirrors or to the side. You do not need to move your head or take your hands off the wheel to achieve this. In GT5, you have to hold down a button which when you're steering at full lock, is neither easy nor realistic. (Yes, I know that the PS-Eye can do this in arcade mode, but is not possible anywhere else in the game, which is where the mojority of time is spent racing).

This is how the OP comes across to me too.

This, this, this!

I suppose that I'm an arcade racer because I seldom use damage when hosting an online lobby, for the simple reason that I find it unfair that myself or another racer should have their race ruined due to some dirty ramming noob entering the room for the soul purpose of screwing everyone up. You wouldn't get these people on a real circuit, they'd never pass a driving or racing license.

.....according to you I'm a noob!

I never said that and I never implied anything of the sort. I simply asked whether you are fully committed to racing realistically, or not. Considering using cockpit view to be a part of being considered FULLY dedicated to realism is not biased at all. Broken record time, you can't drive a car from a front bumper. The fact that you have trouble pushing buttons while driving has no bearing on whether cockpit view is realistic or not.

Sorry I thought you meant the opposite.

I can understand using hood view. It is what I would use in absence of a cockpit view but cockpit is still the most realistic option.

Personally I wish GT5 was like iracing where we could never switch off cockpit view while driving/racing.

I just think that if you want a semi-realistic experience out of a racing game, there are better choices for that than GT5.

Don't get me wrong, I think GT5 is possibly the best racing title ever just for the sheer variety, gameplay, and replayability it has but I think it should be much more of a simulation than it is.

Unfortunately that may not happen even with GT6 due to the community. If the community prefers to be only mostly realistic, PD will most likely try to give the community what it thinks we want.

Based on how most people play it, we won't be seeing a netkar or iracing challenging sim on console, anytime soon. Frankly I think that sucks.

Talk about a biased poll...

Anyways - voted no since I use ABS (which is apparently a GT crime?) and roof/hood view. Furthermore disqualified since GT doesn't have my car. Still fail to see why I'd be sneered at, especially since GT5 isn't a sim in the first place.

The bias in this poll makes it impossible for me to answer. I'm the first option, minus ABS 1, but I use nose cam.

I use it because it's quicker

Terrible excuse

Do you use a car seat ? Do you have a triple monitor setup ? Do you race with a crash helmet on ? If not you're not committed to simulating real racing. Can't drive a car from the sofa or without a crash helmet.

If everyone I raced with used a crash helmet, you're damn right I would. It would be silly, but I'd do it. There's a reason I left some of the statements up to preference, I'm not saying if you don't do all those things 100% of the time that you aren't a sim racer, I'm just saying if you don't prefer to or have any interest in doing those things that you're not entirely a sim racer and I'm only doing that, to more clearly define the poll.

And I'm not saying being a sim racer is better, I'm just trying to differentiate between the two, so people don't keep posting "I can't give an answer cuz I do this and don't do that..."

I feel it's a bit unfair to lump everyone who doesn't use cockpit cam into some sort of uncommitted group of amateurs. Many use it as it minimises the risk of hitting other drivers which is the main concern when racing others.

I feel it's perfectly fair. I'm the one who made the poll, you can't argue with the question I'm asking. That's all it is a question. I'm not implying a damned thing. I am trying to find out just how few or how many people there are in this community that aren't willing to make compromises just to be a little bit quicker, or avoid having to push a button.

Why not? Isn't that the point of a forum?

Don't take this the wrong way but you seem to just want to show everyone how "pro" you are

Frankly, if I could make it so this was only a poll, and not allow comments I would. Is there a way to do that? I didn't think there was but now I wish I had found out first. I don't have time for debate, and seriously debates on any forum are a waste of time because 90% of people on the internet can't be positive. This is a perfect example of that. I ask a simple question, and you take it as if I'm insulting. This forum as well as any other is entirely too pessimistic and I don't enjoy arguing with anybody, let alone people like that.

And I'm not "pro" at all. I'm not even that fast, but I do believe in going all the way, and not just doing things half a**ed. If you don't feel the same, that's fine. It's not your fault. A lot of people just do what their used to and I can understand that. I used to be the same way. Plus we all make compromises at times.

The same with any poll, the purpose is to simply to gauge the community.

It is in no way fair, and the poll undoubtedly needs more options. Who cares about what view you use? It's all a personal preference. According to you, I race dirty and use driving aids because I race in nose cam. Have you ever conducted an experiment? You cannot be nearly this specific in your criteria in this broad of a subject.

EDIT:
I left things "broad" because I didn't want this to turn into an a big debate.
I'm adding this to my original post because I didn't feel like I needed to make another post. By creating such a one sided poll, you have unintentionally created an argument over the poll. You should have known that a poll like this would restrict many, many people from voting or even expressing their opinion because neither option fits them. Polls are made to be a way of generating feedback, but this poll suffers from a lack of ability to do so.

I voted no and I'm proud of that fact.

Thank you.

Everyone else take note. Just because you have differences with someone doesn't mean you need to get defensive about it

PS. Here's my exit. Like I said in the post, this is not a debate (although you guys are free to have one), and I will no longer be bothering to clarify myself or post on this thread. I believe my revisions have made it perfectly clear, although I'm sure some pessimists will continue to take it the wrong way, they're free to do so. Vote yes or no, and have a great day!!

Also, if you voted yes and are interested in racing sometime, feel free to PM me.

Thank you.

Everyone else take note. Just because you have differences with someone doesn't mean you need to get defensive about it.

Um, you don't really know the people on here very well. For some reason, almost everyone treats me as their punching bag. They won't get any sort of lesson from me.

I know you said you'd stop posting in here, but I'm still going to express my opinions.

I'm not being pessimistic, nor am I a pessimist. I think the correct term was 'negative', and that we're being 'negative'. Yes, we are, because we're pointing out that your poll is unfair and one sided. In my eyes, you were asking for responses like this. Simply because other people don't have the same driving preferences as you, they're a dirty racer. I'm in no way taking this personally or to heart, I'm just pointing it out. I apologise if I'm making it look like I am. Because I use some aids, such as ABS, which comes as standard on most, if not all modern day cars, I'm a bad and unrealistic driver? That's what your poll and OP is implying.

Now, anybody who has raced with me will know I'm a very clean racer. I'm such a clean racer that if I accidently knock you off the track, I'll force myself to spin out on the grass out of guilt so you can get your place ahead of me. But, according to your poll, I'm a dirty racer.

I'm trying to point out to you that you are very biased, and I and many others would be fine if you just simply added one more option to the poll, something like "I do some of the above, but not all." or something, just to make it fair. But, what it looks like to me, is that you're not willing to admit that you made a mistake, and now you're accusing us of being pessimists and that we should not question your saying. You say in the thread title itself, 'Community Poll'. That means the community of GTPlanet should be allowed to discuss this. But simply because we're using forums for, initially, what they are for, we're pessimists. Simply because we don't have the same preferences as you, we're pessimists.

This is only what it looks like to me, and only my opinion. Other people however, may or may not agree with me. I just want to make sure that this is just my opinion, and not absoloute fact.

I voted No, but mostly for the fact that, from my experience, GT5 has too many 'less than realistic' things to really be given true "simulator" status.

I actually have a Vauxhall Corsa and I've never floored it in second gear and managed to make the tyres wheelspin, regardless of how cheap the tyres are I buy. (unlike in the game on CM tyres) The FFB is wildly exaggerated too, to get even close to matching my real car I have to turn it down to 4 or less.
I've also not seen any roadgoing cars that have a 10 point adjustable ABS or Traction control system. As for cockpit view, if I could adjust my seat so I don't have anything obscuring my view I'd probably use it more often than I currently do.

That said, I drive as clean as I get given. Start driving like a d*** and I'll join in. If I make a mistake, a big one in a clean room, I've even been known to give myself a drive-through penalty!
