Not that I think the Z06 should cross the 100k mark, but wouldn't that still be less than half of the 911 Turbo and (especially) 458 Italia?
The 911 Turbo is due to start about $150k, the Turbo S at a little more than $180k. Even then, it's a relative bargain compared to what's made available by the Italians. Sitting flat at $100k, if the Z07 does that, it continues to undercut it's competition by tens of thousands, if not more. Even the SRT Viper, with similar specifications, would be in excess of $100k.
If they want to make the Z07 that expensive, by all means, I don't think it's outrageous. Its becoming increasingly difficult to find current C6 Z06s that ring up for less than $90k, especially when you're adding the updated interior, Magnaride suspension, and the fancy wheels/tires.
If I were the man in charge of Corvette development, I'd wanna do something like this:
- Chevrolet Corvette - Standard 5.3L V8, six speed automatic: $43,499 MSRP
- Chevrolet Corvette Eco - Standard 5.3L V8 with Two Mode Hybrid system, automatic-only, re-tuned for performance application versus previous GMT900 applications: MSRP - $51,995
- Chevrolet Corvette Stingray - As is: MSRP $51,995
- Chevrolet Corvette Z07 - 5.5L V8, 550+ BHP, more or less a road-going version of the C7.R: MSRP $89,995
- Chevrolet Corvette "Hammerhead" - Twin-turbocharged 6.2L V8, 700BHP, a very capable and very luxurious Corvette to properly sit above everything else: MSRP $114,995
They've got plenty of room to do whatever they want. I really feel like a budget model down at the bottom would rake in a lot of cash with people just looking to dip their toes into the Corvette water, and within a year or two, they could very easily introduce a monster of a performance car with that extra cash. It's the same damn thing that Porsche, Ferrari, and everyone else does... And as much as it may encroach on the Camaro, there's quite a difference between them.
