Haha, I'd like to update mine a little.

Lead Vocals - Robert Plant. Just untouchable.
Guitar - John Petrucci - amazing songwriter/soloist
Bass - I'm still going with Flea.
Keys - Jordan Rudess - just wow.
Drums - Portnoy.

Yeah so it's pretty much Dream Theater with a different singer and bassist. But hell, what can i say, Dream Theater are talllennteeddd.

First it was Fantasy Football, now this..... great idea :D

Genre - Prog Rock

Lead Vocals - Liz Fraser
Guitar - Robert Fripp
Bass - Chris Squire
Keys - Keith Emerson
Drums - Bill Bruford

Each of the instrumentalists are capable of roaringly powerful and noisy music, but also of highly intricate noodlings that would make this band alot more mellow than the sum of their parts might normally be. Liz Fraser's gorgeous yet totally incomprehensible vocals would be perfect for create the ethereal sound needed for a modern-day prog-rock outfit.
Bob Fripp on guitar could also double up on the Mellotron keyboard. Backing vocals could possibly be supplied by Kate Bush or Peter Gabriel, depending on how much spare time they have, which I'm guessing might be quite alot these days... :sly:

Omnis
Genre: Orchestrated Operetic Hop-Rock

Singer: Luciano Pavarotti
MC: Wheelie Cyberman (Optimus Rhyme)
Violin: Andre Rieu
Cello: Yue Tang (My nextdoor neighbor. hahaha.)
Guitar: Steve Vai.
Drums: That guy from Foghat. That's my drummer. I don't know his name, but he's real good. *duhgga dugh dugghaga, duhgga dugh dugghaga* Yeah. The guy from Foghat.

LMAO!!! The funny thing is I can actually imagine the sound... it would actually work alright!

GTRacer4
Vocals- Robert Plant
Lead guitar- Jimmy Page
Bass- John Paul Jones
Drums- John Bonham
Ahh you beat me to it. You are so banned.

This is impossible to pick. Jaco Pastorius would be great on bass, Jimi Hendrix on guitar, John Bonham on drums and Robert Plant on vocals ... and even though the first post says that I can have whoever, regardless of whether they'd match or not, it's still in the back of my head. Led Zeppelin are the most talented band to ever grace the earth in my opinion, regardless of whether they completely fulfilled the given potential. They matched each other perfectly. I couldn't place a bunch of random greats together in a band, I'd rather give you a list of the finest musicians from each genre, but you realise how long that would take me to write and you to read if I'm talking genres, so I won't torture you all.

Genre: Progressive/Death/Power/Doom metal (not all at once of course)
Vocals: Fabio Lione (Rhapsody) because he can do anything. scream, sing opera-style and growl.
Guitar: Kiko Loureiro (Angra) mostly because he is extremely fast, but also has good sound.
Synth: Jens Johansson (Stratovarius, Mastermind, Yngwie Malmsteen) because he has the best style, and also is one of the fastest
Bass: John Myung (Dream Theater) because he can play everything
Drums: Aquiles Priester (Angra) because he is very fast and a great metal drummer

Ginger Baker - Drums

Eric Clapton - Guitar, Vocals

Jack Bruce - Bass Guitar

Wait, That's Cream!

Uh, throw in Jimmy Rowser on bass, because he's got lots of funk and soul in his style.

Hmm.... Maybe get Jimi Hendrix in as well?

And yet another bump to this thread :D

And here's the all-star team! *drums*

I remember reading a few months ago that a music magazine asked a big sample of music experts this very question. The results were:

Vocals - Robert Plant
Lead guitar - Jimmy Page
Bass - John Paul Jones
Drums - John Bonham

:D

Genre: Metal

Guitarists: Dave Murray, Adrian Smith because they ARE the best guitarists ever.

Bassist: Steve Harris, I've never heard a person play the bass better. No one can even touch him.

Drummer: Nicko McBrain or Lars Ulrich, 2 very great drummers but I can't choose just one.

Vocalist: Bruce Dickinson, Don't know I just like the sound.

So basically my Ultimate Band does exist as Iron Maiden.

Metal/Trash

guitar: Kirk Hammett (Metallica) and Andreas Kisser (Sepultura)
drums: Joey Jordison (Slipknot)
vocals: Robert Flynn (Machine Head) or Serj Tankian (System Of A Down)
bass: I don't know who is the best bass player (maybe Flea but he and Trash???)

But this would be a very hard band.....

Within this forum we have threads like :

Who is the best guitarist ?
Who is the best drummer ?
Who is the best bassist ?

Well now, combine all of your efforts and build your ultimate band.
I'm willing to bet that there will be some interesting line-ups,so lets see who you use to build your ultimate band. They can be past, present, deceased, alive, male, female - lets see what you come up with !!!

For me,to get this started.

Rhythm guitar - James Hetfield ( Metallica )
Bassist - John Entwistle ( The Who )
Drums - John Bonham - ( Led Zeppelin )

Vocals and Rhythm Guitar - Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age / Kyuss) because he's one of the very few artists who performs music for the sake of performing music.

Lead Guitar - John Petrucci (Dream Theater) because he's one of the most complex and accomplished guitarists; he's had more guest appearances at G3 than anyone else. And he maks it look so easy.

Second Guitar - Kirk Hammett (Metallica) just because I can.

Bass Guitar - John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) because Led-Zep were the hard rock band. The original, and still one of the best.

Drums - Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters / Nirvana) because he contributed to Queens of the Stone Age's Songs for the Deaf on drums, and it's a bloody fantastic album.
