I am really rusty with the hybrids. I was struggling to find the right turning point in both of my races. And I died inside when the game matched me up against Oceania's finest in Race 2:

My plebian 34k DR butt winding up in the same lobby as Oceania's incumbent Nations Cup champion? Yeah, no. I'm taking my 12th place and +100 DR and calling it a day.

The big boys were out to play this evening. I copped the strongest lobby I’ve ever seen, including many of those and some top Japanese drivers as well. The pole sitter was pulling 1:56s in race. Suffice to say my second last place was more honourable than it seemed.

Ahh Red Bull Ring Gr3. Probably my best track.

Got a win in my third race, after I decided to set a decent lap. Though I won not because I was fast, but the guy who eventually came second, knocked out every single guy on my tail. First he pushed off first at the turn 2. Then forced the new leader to the sand, I got past with penalty. They retook second by launching another guy in turn 2, and I managed to avoid being sent to gravel in Turn 3 by hugging the apex. Took out some guy on my tail in lap 3, with little shenanigans until the final corner where they took out 2nd place who could had got good traction to win it but they slid in them, sending them off, and snagging 2nd for himself.

This guy was genuinely fast enough to win by outright speed, they catch up after penalty after penalty, but just choose to ruin races for everyone else. Hey a win is a win, but it felt hollow because no one could challenge me without having the idiot pushing them off the race track.

Honestly though, I get what you're saying, I just disagree with that approach.

I'm trying to be a considerate driver to them, but not going to hand over wins. Especially considering the abysmal on-track behavior of most of the drivers who would have won if I hadn't.

To look at it from another perspective, the more I win, the sooner I'm gone from their races and will never see them again

I agree here. IF you are going to race no qual, you still race.
No reason to slow down.
I’ve raced through all ranks many times after sr issues.
To me it would be more of a mockery or insult I guess to pull over from 30 seconds or more ahead to wait for the b c d driver to cross the line first.
I think you will get bored though, or run into sr troubles when they update the penalty system again to trigger if you come within ten feet of another car.
There’s always been a part of me that’s not down with the starting last thing.
In reality it’s no big deal it’s just a video game.
On the other hand for an A plus it’s a foregone conclusion you will be slaloming the low mid a, and all b c d drivers...
The outcome is known.
Again in the grand scheme of things it’s a video game and that’s it.
I remember strongly though many many times I was trying my hardest at C or B and some name guy with a second account (ie BLAME so and so) came by and shoved past or ram me wide or even off track without any care for the fact of how much time and effort I put in to qualify and enter that race.
I’ve had it before when I’ve had time for only one race that night and it was ruined by some guy trying to get you tube content at my expense.
Even if they waited my race has been ruined by a player using multiple accounts to defeat the games matchmaking.
I think it’s more daring to run dailies on main too. Lol not even I’m dumb enough for that though, under the current lack of pens...

I race my main in daily races every day almost.
It's no big deal, ratings are just numbers

So what seems to be the popular car for Race B at the Red Bull Ring - both for qualifying and that for actually racing? I'm assuming that it's like Race C last week, where there's yet another discrepancy between what's popular in the time trials and in the race. Or does this usually only happen in Race C, where there's no tire/fuel use in qualifying but there is in the race itself?

I still wonder why the Peugeot VGT Gr.3 was so popular in qualifying at Tokyo Expressway East when the McLaren F1 GTR was so much more popular in the race itself - and seemed to be so much faster. Could it be that the F1 GTR lasts longer on softs? I mean, I went for a strategy that I thought made sense - about 7 laps on the mediums to begin since I was towards the back, then the last few laps were on softs when I also had less fuel. Y'know, since you had to use both sets of available tires...

I don't know which cars will be best for Red Bull Ring, but whichever cars are good for qualifying will also be good for the race, because it's Race B with no tire wear and no fuel. Usually, that's the only reason for the discrepancy but sometimes it comes down to slipstream with other cars on track too, like the case of last week's Race C.

The Peugeot VGT was a little better for qualy because it's so strong through the twisty parts of the track, and still has good top speed. But in race conditions, the F1 gains so much time on the straight that it's difficult to keep up with them....then once you do catch up with them in the twisty parts, it's nearly impossible to pass them, and if you do, you will likely get passed again on the long straight. So over a lap the VGT can be faster, but in the race it's difficult to be faster because of traffic and the draft.

Good to hear. It sounds like what you're saying will also apply to Race A, at least when there are multiple options for cars like for this week. But I think that if I wanna try Race C at any given moment, I'll consult with this thread first.

i tried racing from the back last week before hanging it up for a few days. i t was ok, but just didn't feel quite right to me. felt like i was missing part of the game or something. so back to qualifying and being punted this week i geuss. :) well isn't that a bad attitude. by the way, took me about 5 minutes to remember why i had uninstalled rfactor 2 in the first place.

Rfactor2 took me hours as a total rookie to get setup.
Then realized I wanted to add dlc content.
But, after all that, now it’s well setup and I know the menus.
The quality of driving is unmatched compared to any game I’ve done. That includes ai.

For online I choose GTS.
Hands down over everything else. With matching where a few tenths might drop you 8-9 places on an online grid?

Last time this combo was on it was the Vantage and the 911 that were the best options for me, by a long shot.

i have had it for numerous years and used to have it set up pretty well, but somewhere along the line things got messede up and have never been able to get things back to where i'm comfortable with it. and am so used to just turning gts on now and everything working perfectly and looking great that everything else just kind of sits there now. even amongst my bitching about getting punted. :)

I don't understand why the top ten times for Race C at Tokyo Expressway East is filled with the Peugeot VGT Gr.3. I tried using it and setting the best time I could in qualifying, then when I went into the actual race, I was the only one using it, while almost everyone else was using the F1 GTR. I also not only came in last, but I was slower than the next-to-last guy by over five seconds. What gives?
I have seen a few answers.

In the faster cars, especially Group 1 and Group 3, I find that I lose a second or two moving to another car. It takes a period of adjustment to gain back the speed.

There is almost no difference between a Clio or Civic that you cannot resolve quickly. It is much more difficult to make that transition in Group 1.

No hollowness allowed. You cannot control the trolls. It was a well earned win. Congratulations!

Well this was a crap evening's racing.
Started off at B due to the timings.
Started 10th. Made good initial progress. However I got involved with a swarm on lap 2 up towards Remus. Found a position to be comfortable in and the car ahead broke. Tapped them. Thankfully they didn't go wide and we all filed through o.k. But I was slapped with a fair 2 second penalty. However this put me back behind those I wouldn't want to be racing. I get a run on someone out of turn 1 and force them to the inside. As I turn in I get barged onto the sausage on the exit which spins my car. Last but 1 I just get back on it. My fastest lap is within a tenth of the Purple lap so I had top 5 pace. Passed a couple of cars which binned it. Came home in 13th. This race will probably be my home this week.

Race A.
No issues with the car control just slow. At least the others were slow too. Started 6th. No divebombs in the first 2 hairpins, good... However race undone with 2 punts on me on lap 1 and 2.

This put me DFL. The German who had done the first one got 3 seconds at least. He went a little wide through the next left hander so I glanced him to show my disgust on the way past. However he was now ahead of me once I got back round the right way after my 2nd punt. Thankfully he went wide on the last lap allowing me to finish ahead of him at least in 10th place.

Race C.
Managed to grab a sub 2 minute time before matching started. This put me 8th on the grid which I thought was good. However I started on the first part of the last chicane. But as the auto drive tries to maintain a grid formation I was facing the outside meaning I had to waste a second or 2 waiting for my car to rotate enough to put some gas on. This meant I was about 2 seconds off the car ahead with 9th right up my behind. Good work PD! Don't qualify 8th here, top tip.👍
However I wasn't having any dramas here and soon found myself 4th and fighting for 3rd. Pitted lap 5 which was probably a lap too late as the front tyres were dead. However the mediums felt awful. Those behind now on softs came after me. If race A was full of Frenchmen this was full of Spaniards. And they barged past especially at the final chicane. One who did so mucked up the 2nd part so I was right behind him going into La Source. I sent him on a quest to find the source. Eventually I was barged back to 9th. Then on the last lap my car understeered at Stavelot. I almost got out of the gravel without a spin but the car didn't want that. Thankfully only 1 person passed me. I crossed in 10th but went up to 9th as the winner forgot to swap tyre compounds.

Compared to the last week or so I might have similar pace to my peers. But as my DR has slowly fallen over the last few days I have found the dirtier drivers. :guilty:

Role reversal for me this week I prefer Race A Over C :embarrassed:!

I have that French's, that German's and that Italian's names written in blood! :)
You really did tolerate them. I could have sent them to narnia without much thinking.
I actually know the German for a long time for his extreme dirtyness and written the other two's names on a post-it near my rig.
Last week's Clio and this week's Fugu Z are quite handful for them so people are safe-r. :)

I have not raced yet... actually done very little racing over the last week or so.

For Group 1 Spa I have been practicing with no TCS whereas I used TCS in my last venture at this combo.

If you are starting at or behind the chicane I strongly advise TCS on cold tires to get through that mess. You can turn it off after La Source.

In general PD has done a poor job with rolling starts with kinks. Too much separation.

I always try to keep to my 3 strike rule unless completely obvious of course , I know I've had an issue with the German in the past I think from memory.

Usually, that's the only reason for the discrepancy but sometimes it comes down to slipstream with other cars on track too, like the case of last week's Race C.

Interestingly (or not), last time we had this combo my fastest qualifying was in the Viper because it was super fast through the infield section, but in the race it couldn't keep up with the Aston Martin's mega torque out of the corners during the race (and then couldn't pass in it's quicker sector) However the Viper got a little nerf last update so the Aston is quicker for me now. That thing is a beast at RBR!

I've not had an issue that needed TCS on a rolling start for a while, though it is a useful weapon to have. The issue was the placement of the car when it was released into my control. It was at the wrong angle away from the apex of the corner. It might as well have started me on the runoff.

I challenged myself this evening to win race C in a non hybrid car. It was tough, with the R18 dominating the timing screens and the TS050 being highly competitive too. I took the Peugeot 908 into a 37.5K DR (A/S) lobby and started P4. The 908 has the absolute top end, but it feels heavy through the mid corner and impossibly slow on corner exit compared to the hybrids with their electrical boost! To make it more interesting, I started on the mediums!

I had a blast during the race and jumping my competitors in the stops was key. Although the absolute top end made passing easy if we were side by side or nose to tail, not having the hybrid boost meant that actually overtaking on track would have been difficult. I could use the top end defensively though, which worked well.

Great fun if anyone wants a challenge.
