So, I recently sold my kit car to pay for the insurance of my latest purchase - My lovely new (well, 20 year old) 1993 Eunos Roadster.

I have lots of plans and ideas of what I want to do to the car, and I will try and keep the thread updated...

Pic when I first got her...

Sunday Drive

So after a week of driving the car around and getting used to RWD, me and a couple of mates decided to go for a drive to take some pictures...

And after that I thought she deserved another clean. (3rd one of the weekend...)

So yeah, just a normal uneventful sunday drive, apart from one massive (and I mean massive) oversteer moment where for a moment the car looked to have gone past the point of no return but I somehow managed to keep it pointing the right way around. The honest truth is I wasn't even driving that aggressively, but coming off a roundabout at 40+ in greasy conditions near a bus station (oil all over the road) isn't the best idea I guess.

That would be awesome, though hop up parts would probably get really expensive. I don't know the aftermarket world for them that well.

I plan to supercharge her in a year or two, 200BHP in a 900kg car sounds good fun. It's lively enough as it is in the rain.

Where the car is at the minute...

As of this moment, other than a couple of minor interior modifications, such as new leather gaiters, a stainless steel plate to replace the ashtray, and making a little mount to offset the numberplate, I haven't really done anything to the car yet. Right now I am saving up for a set of Rota RB 15x7 wheels and a set of Toyo Proxes T1R tyres to replace the scratched and damaged TSW's and the economy tyres that are wrapped around them. After that I plan to fit Gaz Classic coilovers to lower the car a bit and transform the cars handl

There are a couple of things wrong with the car, the front bumper has a bit of faded paint where the number plate used to sit, the repair job on the driver side sill has been finished poorly, and the boot paint has a bit of an imperfection in it too. Also, there is a bit of a top end rattle in the engine, most probably the tappets on their way out. All easily sorted issues, other than that the car is mechanically sound and I will get round to fixing this when my wallet allows.

I am going with a classic/retro racing car look, but I want the car to be functional enough that if I wanted to take it on a track day, it would be more than at home. If you bare with me, this car has potential. ;)

Great choice man! I've been able to drive a few of these in performance situations and they never cease to amaze me. So light, so balanced, so precise. Enjoy it!

Yep! I have a supercharged '96 as my autocross rat / hooner - it's definitely a ball of fun to drive. You should look up your closest autocross / gymkhana and give it a whirl, even on stock power levels. It's a very good time.

Choosing the right wheels...

Okay, so the first thing that I plan to change on the car are the wheels. Unfortunately, I cannot make my mind up which ones I want so I am going to post a picture of three particular wheels on a black MX5, and I want you guys to help me decide...

Okay so here goes...

ROTA RB (£525 inc. Postage)

Gold...

Thanks! :) Yeah, they are fantastic machines, I don't think anything rivals it for the money, not at all.

I may look into that. ;) It does sound fun.

I prefer the RBs in gold, then the Grids in bronze, then the Grids in white, in that order. Don't like black wheels on a black car, even with a polished lip. Not a fan of those Enkeis at all.

I would look into the weight of the wheel - MX5s are very sensitive to unsprung weight. Look into 949 Racing's 6ULs (if they ship to Blighty) or Kosei K1s (I have my race tires on these). Another great option are Enkei RPF01s, but I don't know the cost for you.

Rotas are heavy for their size in most cases, with an exception for the Slipstreams. Motegi TrackLites and Rays Gram Lites are good, as well as the ones listed above. You pay for that weight though. Unsprung weight is key on a Miata, as it doesn't have a lot of power to get things going. Also, look at tire weight too! Tires are farther from the hub and therefore their weight is actually more important for acceleration.

If you searches on some US SCCA solo/Autocross forums you will find some common choices for the MX-5 that are race proven. The SCCA guys squeeze every ounce from those cars, especially in the CSP class.

The Rota RB's weight a slight (Very slight) bit more than the standard wheel.

I looked into 6UL's and they seem a bit too expensive to be honest. And the Kosei and Enkei seem pretty impossible to get a hold of over here.

And I will have a look on those forums too, thanks. ;)

Yeah, slipstreams are Honda wheels, based off of the Spoon design from the 90s. Can't argue with their performance though! I have a set of 16s for my wife's GTI that she raced on for a couple of seasons.

I daily drive on some standard Rota Torques (23 lb) in the Evo. I race on the factory BBS wheels (17 lb) on the Evo MR. The race package is about 8lb lighter per corner (with tires), and the difference is night and day. It is a completely different car with the lighter package. And that's with 400 whp. At Miata power levels it could feel like you're towing another car behind you.

That's a good way of putting it.

The Enkei J-Speeds are a good couple of lb lighter than the RB's (13.2 iirc) which is about the same as standard MX5 wheels. I do like them in white, shame I couldn't find a more flattering picture...

I think 200bhp is optimistic with a blower, 180bhp with a turbo but without shed loads of cash you're not going to get more than that with a supercharger.

Good choice on going RWD, though. So much more satisfying to drive, how's the insurance considering your age? (is it a 1.6 or 1.8).

Yeah, to be fair even 180 is a tad optimistic haha.

Maybe 170 - 180.

Insurance wasn't too bad for my age, cost me £1700 fully comp.
