This was posted on another forum by a member who is part of the team working on Forza 3, discussing why the Nissan GT-R is not included in their game. Emphasis mine.

No R35 GTR, because they are a bunch of [Censored]. Apparently the GTR team is independent from the rest of Nissan on many levels, one of them being licensing. The only way they would allow us to use the R35 was if it had no damage, no rollover, no custom wheels, no custom parts that improved performance, no painting, and no livery. So we said no thanks.

So the old belief that some manufacturers would not allow damage therefore nothing had damage might still ring true. Now of course PD have a special relationship with Nissan and specifically GT-R, so they might get a special deal, but it seems unlikely that Gran Turismo will include damage, but only on certain cars...

Something to ponder.

My money is on the fact that, because Polyphony has a part in the design of the car that all that stuff is exclusive to Sony.

I think GT5 will end up being damage to racecars only. That will get around any manufacturers not wanting their street cars getting damaged and looking unsafe.

I'm not sure if I'd want my car in a game that makes it look unsafe.

The Ford GT in the Forza 3 video touched a wall and flipped like crazy. What will a potential buyer think after seeing that video? Maybe the GT-R guys dont want to see their car in situations like that?

He named a number of reasons why they didn't let them include the GT-R, but I have a feeling damage was the biggest, since it was mentioned first. They probably didn't like the custom paint etc and where probably willing to overlook it, but no custom wheels or tuning parts? I have a hard time believing they had a problem with that

Maybe customization and damage is exclusive to GT5P? After all PD help develop the GTR.

The R35 GTR is in one of the new NFS Shift trailers complete with custom livery. I dont think it has any aero parts on it or gets damaged but it definately has custom paint.

Thanks for this

I think all the talk about how the GT-R guys didn't want custom paint, custom wheels etc and thats why they didnt want the car in the game is BS

It was 90%+ damage/flipping in my opinion

I think the main reason is Sony just doesn't ant to pay the extra money to allow them to put damage on cars.

but the thing about rims, bodykits, damage and livery....hummm in Nfs Prostreet u can rollover and crash a GTR, put some ugly ass wide-bodykits , some ugly chrome rims and paint it with a gold chrome paint with some fire decals and they didnt said anything so... i think its more like saying hey, we dont want our car in your game because we are pals of Kaz and we wanna help him...not like audi, promoting FM3 like they forgot the Audi R8 meets Gran Turismo thingy...

Audi had the R8 in F2.

Also, if there is only partial damage I may not get it depending on how they do it.

All this barrage of negative rumors from unconfirmed sources on the day of FM3's announcement smell kinda fishy to me....I'll wait to hear Sony's take once it's all said and done.

Or Turn 10 realized that the R35 was that good, that it owned all other cars on track :P;)

No honestly, I really think that maybe they didn't like flipping over ( but then again it seems to be ok with other Nissan's which doesn't really make sense ) and at the end of the day the real reason might be Sony or Polyphony. After all NFS is NFS, while FM3 is the direct competitor to GT5. I don't like it, but I can live without GT-R R35 in Forza3. And who knows, we might get it as DLC someday.

He stated the flip in the F3 video was just for the video, it's not something that will happen a lot in the game as it's hard to get the accident just right.

I think the GT-R's inclusion in NFS may be due to the fact that no one in their right mind would consider NFS realistic, especially in terms of how the cars perform or crash.

I seem to recall there were cars in GT2 that did not allow aftermarket wheels to be added? I want to say Mercedes but I can't quite remember.

Indeed

I wonder if maybe Nissan are loyal (somewhat) to Gran Turismo with the GTR and want to give GT the rights to this sort of thing rather than it's closest competition. The paint, mods and damage part is pretty de-bunked (NFS Shift will have all of them apparently) but the rollover part might not be.

Only time I think a car would rollover is at Daytona, maybe im wrong but thats the only place I have seen a car go into the air and its obvious the "game" pulled it back to the track. Im not too worried about rollovers... though it would be cool if they rolled and blew up like in a Steven Segal movie, lol.

GT5: p allow us to decrease/increase the power of the GTR to have less/more P.P, and the same for the weight. Why wouldn't we be allowed to add some custom parts that improve the performances?

...and it happened with GT3 and 4 as well. But the cars that you couldn't change the wheels on were special - Polyphony Formulas and concept cars - not fully fledged production cars.

Another point to also make is that if someone buys a GTR, they are essentially advertising Nissan and the GTR. People will see it, hear it and will want to know who makes it. So can Nissan stop someone from giving it really small bright pink wheels and a huge sticker across the side saying "Don't buy this car! It sucks and handles like a cow!"?

No

Nissan: What one can do in GT is way less than what one can do in real life. More than that, only a few people will see if someones GTR has been fitted with the smallest steelies (shock horror) you can get in the game. Someone painted a GTR pink (sponsored by Donut King) for a tarmac rally. If there WAS a livery editor, short of "Don't buy this car", Pink with "Donut King" is about as bad as you could get. We can all imagine - and don't think you can control our thoughts as well as what we put on a GTR.

Sorry, but I call BS. Not on the livery, but the fact that a game developer's worker would actually use profanity to describe one of Nissan's teams.

Yeah, that's a good move.

"We want to use your GT-R."
"Not unless these demands are met."
"Screw you, then, you 🤬."

I don't believe it. No one's that stupid to insult a manufacturer.

Insulting a manufacturer like this will get them into trouble, since Nissan is one of the most important ones! If they decide that this insult was unprovoced and unfair, they might take their license back and wont allow Turn 10 to use Nissans at all. No 350z, no Skyline, no Rallycars, no LM cars and especially no GTR. It would make Turn10 look dumb when they announce the "defining game of this generation" without having Nissan in it.

But this usually happens behind closed doors and i guess we will never know for sure why licensing cars is such a pain for Polyphony Digital and Turn10. But since Forza 3 only features nearly half the amount of cars that GT5 will most likely do, the licensing department from Polyphony must have worked hard, thats for sure!

Only about 7 hours left until we know whats in the oven!

Turn 10 didn't say it, someone who is apparently on the "inside" said it, they may or may not work for turn 10.

His other posts in that link are way too far-fetched. 10 cars a month for DLC for FM3? 2 other games claimed that and we've seen the results....Besides that, I don't believe Turn10 would allow a developer to release that much information.

I know FC, which is the other one? :)

Forza 2 Didn't deliever on some previously promised DLC if I remember correctly?

This is utter crap. You could put massive a body kit, obscene paint, stupid rims and huge spoiler on the R35 in NFS Pro Street. You could also flip the car. What a load of crap.

(this one is not too distasteful but you get the point)

Exhibit B:

(Yeah I know its not a GTR but I bought the game and yes you could flip the GTR.)

I think Turn 10 will have to do some fast talking when certain posts start circulating. ;)

I've seen similar posts from the Turn 10 team, toned down a bit, and some of them don't hide well the disdain they have for Polyphony or GT fans.

Now wait a second, don't give me this "allegedly works for Turn10" crap, he's a member of the small knit forum I'm a member of, he works for them. If you don't believe that, then quite frankly you don't believe me.

I already offered an explanation for NFS: Pro Street.

And he can insult the GT-R development team all he wants, he's not offering an official company position and he's discussing it with a small group of friends. Profanity has nothing to do with the legitimacy of the claim, what a stupid ignorant way to brush it off.

No but he is correct in that Nissan does attempt to stop people from making performance upgrades on the real car by having a heavily coded ECU. This would fit Nissan's style when it comes to the GT-R.

I'm pretty sure an industry standard is "over promise, under deliver", especially in the racing genre. Because I can't possibly think of any other racing games that have done that in the past decade...

Yeah, your probably right because NFS: Pro Street had the GT-R and you could customize and damage it...but no rollover.

I'm a member of this forum that you're a member of. I work for PD. That must mean I'm telling the truth.

That doesn't explain why Shift has succeeded in doing everything he claims Nissan wouldn't allow Turn10 to do. He's obviously bs'ing everyone with that comment.

Promising 10 cars a month is a big promise. Turn10 won't do that because they're not retarded, and they know they will be heavily criticized if they don't deliver just like Ferrari Challenge & TDU were.
