Describe DriveClub in one word

Soulless.
I am aware of all the noise about this word but to me this is the truth. When I mean soul, I think about GT1 (eg. dealership music), Ridge Racer Type 4 (atmosphere) or Burnout (gameplay wise).

I think soulless is a bit strong - okay, it's your opinion...but...I think it might be the wrong word

It certainly has character and I believe soul in what it brings - in fact, harking back to the old racers, DC gives me a very similar feel, which is why I replied. There again, I hated all of the interim music from the early GT - not a big fan of lounge jazz. Give me the real jazz, not Murph and the Magictones stuff.

Replacement

Allow me to explain. Some four months ago, I bought Project CARS due to the hype getting to me, and I guess I expected way too much from it. I'm going to say, 2 1/2 weeks before that game started to get too repetitive for my tastes. I don't think that's a bad game by any merit, and if you like that game, then more power to you. I was just heavily disappointed and didn't want to keep it in my house anymore. So this morning, around 13 hours ago, I successfully traded it for DC for only $25, and I have not so far regretted my decision.

Rain
(weather effects still unsurpassed to date on console in my opinion)

or even
Surprises
(like the new bike DLC, the arrival of the Wombat Typhoon earlier in the year, and others.)

Do you ever feel like they are so proud of their weather effects(they have very right to be) that 85% of the dang races are in the rain? It's so hard to race in the rain, at night especially. It took me an hour just to 3 star the Henessey Venom GT time trial at the end of the original career.

Soul is an interesting idea in this genre, cause I feel like most people couldn't care less about it in a racing game. But it's something I look for no matter what I'm playing, and in my opinion Driveclub's got it. It's about the thrill of driving the most amazing cars in the most beautiful vistas on the planet. To me, the jaw-dropping environments, pristine visuals, game-changing weather effects, and sharp, old-school arcade handling give this game a soul. It reminds me of those Top Gear episodes where they set off to find the world's best roads. Simple driving pleasure.

For examples on the opposite side of the spectrum, Project Cars and Forza lack it. I still like both, but they're not very interesting or pretty, and there's no thrill or beauty in the way they operate. In terms of physics accuracy and racing excitement they hit the nail pretty well on the head, but they're very much dry, by-the-numbers simulations. And there's certainly a place for that. But to this day, every time I take a spin around Cayoosh Point or Lytton I'm in total awe, and I don't get anyhwere near the same feeling from those other games.

I'm glad you name-dropped R4 though. It's my favorite game ever, and the epitome of soul.

Dedication.

Feel like this perfectly sums up Evolution Studios commitment to this game considering how it started off. In a world of half-arsed game releases and post-releases, Driveclub is one of the few examples of modern gaming done right. I know they completely cocked up the launch, but not many companies would have extended to the lengths Evolution have done after all the lay-offs and ambiguity about their future.

It's so refreshing to see this in the console market.

Except that its an arcade with awful driving physics, and except that it has a very short list of cars and tracks... but other than that I guess its complete and not "half-assed" :)

Except that its an arcade with awful driving physics,
This is an opinion, which you are entitled to. Please don't present it in a factual manner.

it has a very short list of cars and tracks...
Is there an arcade racer on PS4 with more?

but other than that I guess its complete
Your first point about the driving physics doesn't really factor in on how complete a game is. Further, all tracks that were added to the 'tiny' track list were free and clearly not held back DLC. Likewise for the cars. My definition of 'half-arsed' constitutes things like features advertised on the box not appearing for over a year and then not even being usable without an external device or 'quantum breaks' in DLC that never actually happened(i.e: publisher/developer lies).
