So here's the deal. Today's sightings were so volumnious that I'm only going to post the best pictures of each vehicle. Several vehicles I saw multiple times and got several pictures of, but if I did that, I'd be here all night. So here goes, from the beginning, though note I'm a bit rushed tonight so I might not go into as much detail as usual. All pictures taken October 14, 2006, in the Buckhead section of Atlanta, Ga.
Shuttle to mall, eat, walk outside. As always. Outside the mall in valet:
Not bad, obviously, but not uncommon in the slightest. Sitting parked a few feet from the Maserati, though, was this gem:
(it was parked near the Maserati, but that shot turned out badly; this is a second shot I had at the vehicle about an hour later - same vehicle for sure though)
Proceeded down Peachtree Avenue, and caught a Maybach, but I couldn't get my camera out in time, so I just caught the tail end. Frown! It was okay, though, because I made up for it later:
Both of those pictures were taken much later in the afternoon, although the silver Maybach is the one I saw and was unable to photograph early on. Moving on down the street, at the InterContinental, parked as it always is:
I photograph and post it every week but folks, it's a Phantom, and if I've learned one thing from living in Denver (two Phantoms in 17 months), it's "don't take Phantoms for granted."
Parked near the Phantom:
Yes - rare enough to warrant a picture - the valet guys here clearly know cars, since they left it up front (with a 300C SRT-8, SL500, 911 C4, and Phantom). Most valets would probably relegate a "lowly Mazda" to the standard parking lot.
A few minutes later:
Nice shot if I may say so. About 20 minutes later, at my favorite intersection, having JUST arrived, I saw this:
It's a DB7 Volante, if you can believe it (I could barely). Female driver, dealing with hair. No surprise. I later saw another DB7 Volante that may or may not have been the same one - I didn't photograph it, thinking it was the same, but now I'm not so sure. This was parked in a handicapped spot at the upscale mall:
It's only the second time I've seen a Phantom parked anywhere but valet. That brings today's Phantom count up to two, for those of you playing at home. At valet at the same mall:
Gorgeous car, as always; the 360 is really one of my favorite Ferraris. Saw this drive by a few minutes later:
Then it turned in to mall valet, where I took this picture:
Very cool, and I was very happy to see two of them today. Not long after, I saw this guy:
Esprit V8 - not sure of the trim (SE or GT?) but definitely a very cool car. It took a bit of time for me to see it - it's not hugely low or wide, and in black (and with those wheels) it blends in very well. Next up:
Not even sure if I should post that, but you guys always express interest in SRT cars, so I figured why not - I saw every SRT today except the tough ones: didn't catch a Viper or a Crossfire. In fact, I still haven't seen a Crossfire SRT-6 in Atlanta. Speaking of Dodge:
Just out (2007 Dodge Nitro), and part of the Budget Rental Car fleet. Saw this particular one twice. It doesn't look as bad as it does in pictures, honestly - just like the CR-V, it blends in. Then again, that may have something to do with the fact that it's in silver. And in those wheels. Speaking of just-out Chrysler products owned by rental companies:
That's the new Chrysler Sebring folks - I really didn't think it was out yet, but I guess I was wrong. I guessed that "the VIN probably ends in 00008," which may be true since rental companies do usually get just-out cars first. After the Nitro:
I wouldn't usually post that picture due to its quality, but that's actually a GranSport Spider, not just a regular Spider - I noticed it too late to prove that, though, so I guess you'll have to take my word. Speaking of crappy pictures, here's one:
That was my "regret of the day" - I never did see that car again to make that shot up, which I hate because I love photographing Gallardos, and looking at Gallardos, and drooling over Gallardos. It's okay, though, because this one made up for it (seen minutes before the black one posted above):
I saw that orange one twice before I got that picture, and to get it I had to climb up on a sign indicating the name of the mall, which was quite difficult. It was rewarding, though, because while on the sign I also caught this:
Louisiana plates. He eventually turned in to mall valet, producing this picture:
I've never seen valet handle a supercar before, and trust me - they handled this. I've never seen anyone take so much care when getting out of a vehicle!
I'm jumping ahead though - prior to the GT sighting, I saw this:
Tag was "1 FRUIT" sparking speculation of the sexual orientation of the owner, though I really don't think anyone driving a Phantom with those rims can be anything other than straight. With hoes. A few mintues after the Phantom:
Cute car, eh? No GranSport like before, but it works. That's the fourth Maserati of the day, and every model they make (if you don't get trim happy). Saw the Coupe, Quattroporte, GranSport, and Spider. 👍
Number two sighting of the day:
You've never seen that. You're afraid of that. You run when you see those. Which you don't. Actually they're not that uncommon, but I've only seen two. They're outlawed in six states, including California, which is weird, because the other one I saw had California plates. Hmm. Another odd SUV:
Not just a G-class: it's a G-wagen. Two doors! Parallel import, anyone?
And speaking of parallel import:
Hell yes. They're not
that rare, but they're rare stock, and they're cool, and they are indeed uncommon - and you love them. Admit it, you do. Good stuff. Getting ready to leave the intersection, this occurred:
That's a Ferrari F355 Spider. I saw it coming way down the road, but it was a tough shot because the green Pontiac Grand Am you can sort of see in that shot blocked the usual path to the turn lane, so I had to wait until he had turned, and my camera decided to focus on a pedestrian instead. So that's what I have. Already posted the Maybachs, but one of them came here. After a Maybach, another rare Japanese car:
Don't know whether it was a Turbo or not, but I never see them. Most people see them constantly, but I see one every two months or so, so please forgive me for posting a picture. Back to the mall, back to valet:
Phantom number four today. I'll save you the suspense, though, there are no more today. After a Boxster with ski racks and another Maybach 57 (above), it finally happened:
Did you see that?
Marcello Gandini's masterpiece. Here's the irony of this: yesterday, out of boredom, I was combing through Lamborghini Registry, and ran across
THIS EXACT CAR, wondering, "I wonder if he ever drives it up in Buckhead," as it was one of just two Countachs the registry has in Atlanta. Less than 24 hours later, I saw the vehicle in real life (in Buckhead). Here's the thing about this car:
IT'S LOUD. I've never seen a louder vehicle, ever. It was deafening. I ran down the road photographing it, people stopped to stare - everyone knew something special had just happened.
Only 610 Countach LP5000S QV models, like this one, were made, and around 1,982 Countachs were made in total but it's like I mentioned to my girlfriend - yeah, the Enzo, etc. is
rarer, but this sighting is most certainly just as good - because people don't
DRIVE their Countach. It's a bitch to drive, it breaks down constantly, and you can't go anywhere without attracting loads (LOADS) of attention. People would rather just put them on their wall.
This is the first Countach I've seen on the road.
Of course, nothing could really compare to the Countach, but a couple of things tried:
That one pulled into the Ritz-Carlton. Next up:
Florida plates on that one. And this:
Followed into valet by a G55 which the valets didn't find worthy of being placed in the same line as the Arnage and the 360 Modena.
Back on the street, I heard a noise, looked back, saw this, turned my camera on, and got... this photo:
Second chances were everywhere today, and actually I messed up my second chance with this car, so I was given a third chance, which produced this picture:
And this one, which I think more accurately portrays the gorgeous color scheme on this vehicle:
Those were today's sightings, and I hope you guys liked them. As usual, the Bentley collage:
I actually saw three Conti GTs but since the other photo didn't fit, I decided not to think of some creative way to fit it but rather just leave it off, since why be creative when Volkswagen wasn't creative when styling the vehicle. Long sentence? Yes. But that one was short. Also caught this 911 right near the end - anyone know if it's anything special?
