About an hour ago I saw a Tesla Roadster. I chased after it and got a few (very poor) shots while next to him at a light. He turned into the parking lot of a local casino and at risk of being a little bit of a weirdo I doubled back and went to get a better picture. As I was turning up an isle I saw the driver and I said, "Sorry, I really just wanted to get a few pictures of it." he replied, "It's no problem, if you can wait for a minute I'll be right back out and I'll take you for a ride."
Now I want you to note it is at this point that any semblance of me being a generally composed and dignified human being flies out the window. It will not return until I get back in my own car.
I reply with the sort of excitement that the N64 kid had on that fabled morning. "Really!?!?!" So I wait like a silly little puppy, prancing around the car taking photos (my car is parked directly next to it and provides a good size comparison) and generally being in slack jawed squealing awe. The owner returns and is all smiles, "I love showing it off to someone who really appreciates cars." He has seen this enthusiasm and goes on to explain that he still feels it himself, and that he just barely manages not to do a little jig while walking out to it in the morning.
I run a little video on my phone, which of course due to my excitement is embarrassingly bad, but certainly proof positive of my little jaunt. (I'll post if anyone is interested, I managed to not catch anything interesting on film, so it's more evidence than actually enjoyable, unless you like looking at a dashboard while I chatter and then getting a few glimpses of the road.)
He does really lay into the car and it is startlingly quick. We talk about the car, and it is the 2010 model, car number 505 (5th 2010 car) with the fully sorted transmission. What made him get it was that he owns a Prius and wanted to go full electric instead of hybrid. With the rapid charger it charges in about 2.5 hours and it's just astounding. The car is similar in size (maybe even smaller than) an Elise and is incredibly low to the ground. Getting in and out is by no means a mean feat. Room inside is, well... enough. I have similar headroom to my Eldorado and my legs could be straight, but the footwell was rather narrow for my admittedly large boots.
I have a lot more to say regarding it, but for the moment let me say this: If you are thinking of spending $110,000 or so on a car the only two cars you should look at are this and the R8, and IMHO the R8 pales in comparison, except for creature comforts. (The wild sounds the Tesla makes up for nearly all the difference in my opinion)
