DiRT Rally Thread

When you try Masters for the first time, and the start of your season is in the middle of a snowstorm. :(

Few weeks in now and i'm craving a new location, such an amazing game that stills has me hooked but it does take the excitement out of it when I've ran the same stages over and over including seeing the same sections repeated in the same rally in career mode.

On the plus side starting to get the hang of rallycross now :) AI can be very frustrating but its very rewarding when i win an event.

I got this game today and it is far more challenging that any racing game I've played! I've managed to win a couple of rally stages but I find most of the races quite stressful, especially with S1600 Rallycross. I'm also bearing in mind that the career starts out with the "entry level" open championships so things are only going to get harder from here... :scared:
Would you say this is a game for Aliens only? Been waiting for a price drop before jumping on this but i defo dont want a stressful game. I am miles aaway from being an Alien and fear this game might be more irrataring than fun due do the very difficult ai times.

Also is it still true default setups for cars are really poor? Can you download setups like Forza?

Personally I would say you need to be highly skilled to win events, but I have been managing to have fun with the game despite finishing midfield most of the time. Despite running on a dated graphics engine, the game looks very crisp and runs at a stable 60fps on Xbox One (and I presume any other system). The physics are on point and require you to actually get to know your car to become competitive. I'm only finding the game stressful because I can't win, especially in Rallycross.

In short, if you are looking for a pick up and play game, DiRT Rally is not recommended. It does require a lengthy learning curve.

If you are a decent driver who doesn't throw it in the weeds every other corner you'll do fine with DiRT Rally. Keeping it on the road is probably just as important as outright pace is early on - speed, and podiums, will come later

They aren't terrible. Maybe slightly exaggerated to make the cars handle differently from one another in the classes. I know a guy in my league that wins every time with just the defaults, even though tuning is enabled.

I know you can download setups on the Steam Workshop, but I have no idea how it works on the consoles.

All in all, if you go at your own pace and don't overdrive the cars, you can have a lot of fun just learning the rallies.

The game isn't too hard if you apply caution and appreciate the difference between rally venues and the cars. I'd recommend it to anyone providing they could put a moderate amount of time in.

I'd say race sims are only stressful if there are unrealistic elements ruining the gameplay, such as bad handling model where you lose control without understanding why or having to work through all the AI in a short race to win in order to progress, but constantly getting blocked or penalized for slight touches... That kind of thing.

DiRT Rally is not easy, but as long as you concentrate and adapt your driving style to the needs of rally it's a really fun sim. It's very satisfying as you get the feel for a car enough to not only take it cleanly through a stage but also competitively with the AI.

You do need to accept the crashes at first, though. In circuit racing the penalty for a mistake is usually a few seconds lost from a bad corner. In rally you will fall off the road, hit a tree, damage or destroy your car, etc... so you start off with the focus on keeping the car under control, away from the trees. Then you start being more and more aggressive as you begin to understand that this is not only the fastest but also usually the safest way through corners. It's a very interesting learning experience.

Getting a bit frustrated again; I'm trying to unlock a series of achievements for winning various titles - "Does your mother know?", "Fire spitting monsters", "Friends-Rivals-Champions-Legends" and "So Last Year" - and I have stacked the deck by making sure I only compete in the Open championship (I deliberately retire at the start of each Clubman event), but I'm struggling to keep it on the road. Every bump in Sweden pitches me into a snowdrift or a spin, and I can only manage to finish second at best.

This game isn't for people who expect to win every race, and quite frankly it's odd to me that people dismiss the game so fast because they see it as too hard. Thing is, the more I play it the more I appreciate the difficulty. By forcing you to push hard for good times, you learn the stages and you learn the cars. Not only that, but winning doesn't really earn you much more than getting in, say, 4th or 5th position. You can still progress, and the more you play the better you'll get anyways. I think it's pretty genius. Personally, I turn off all the HUD and just do my best racing and don't see my time until I finish.

Anyways, I still kinda suck at the game, but it's good fun. Does anyone else have issues with the Lancia 037 being almost too hard to handle? The Opel Manta is nowhere near as difficult to handle as the 037 despite being RWD
Group B also. I noticed too that the Stratos is a little difficult too. Just a Lancia thing?

I'm not great at the game but I'm more than content with finishing comfortably in the top tier for all the daily events. I'm not an alien, don't think I'll ever be!

Same here, right from the start I had everything turned off, I've no idea what the HUD looks like! I didn't know you got split times with differences or anything like that until a colleague mentioned them. It also means I have no idea how much time you lose for recovering the car etc. It helps keep the pressure on and you really have to listen to the co-driver, as if you miss what he says, you've got no other means of knowing what's coming up!

Trophy hunting :), I like collecting trophies.

You only need to win three of the events to win the championship, if you can finish no worse than second on the other three. My first time through the game I focused on Greece, Germany and Monaco. On my second play through I had improved greatly in Sweden and Wales, I was still having an inappropriate attraction to the trees in Finland though.

In the open championship there seems to be more of a chance of only one AI winning. Clubman was easier with other AI's finishing better, just an idea.

I definitely appreciate the challenge of Dirt Rally and it's what keeps me playing, there are so many games out there where I can just fall asleep playing out of boredum because the AI is tuned for lesser skilled players and its just a big ball and dance about how awesome you the driver are as you win every race with ease and they shower you with visual/audio fluff.

That's why Dirt Rally was a breath of fresh air for me, there is challenge even for the more skilled of drivers. Even so it could do with being harder at Masters, once your cars have been upgraded you regularly see yourself winning some stages by 20 seconds or more, or being able to get away with pretty big mistakes, spinning out or even rolling the car and coming to a win, so it's not as if you need to be Colin Mcrae to win.

But the focus on the game just being about the overall driving experience makes it for me, none of the side show distracting fluff, just raw awesome gameplay, visuals, sounds. If it was less challenging and more forgiving I would be highly disapointed and probably end up getting bored quickly as I do in most racers.

After losing to get back down to Open I went through a bunch of series for the achievements. Most interesting for me was the Lancia 037 which I think I did at Elite, raced with the HUD turned off and no timer until end of stage, Full Manual with H-shifter and heel-toe for throttle blips... And honestly it was one of the most visceral gaming experiences, the level of concentration quite exhausting after 1-2 hours of play with such a challenging car, but it is honestly everything I live for in my sim racing hobby..

There is probably no title I'm more anticipating than Dirt Rally 2 if they can improve on DR as an authentic rally sim experience.

Im treating the Rally Cross segment as a totally different game, but ive got to say,its providing some of the most intense, close racing ive had on console. Anyone agree?

Im on Professional level now,and its hard to get in the top 3 in the semi, never mind the final - but im loving the challenge. I spent about an hour in the lyddon hill semi to try and get 3rd,and i finally did it. I love working out the strategy of the AI,which ones take the joker early, and sometimes you have to just wait for them to make a mistake or crash to get though.

The S1600 class on Lydden Hill is an absolute blast and does make for some really close door to door racing. Everything else is pretty much a walk in the park though.
