It's going to be interesting to see what excuses the believers think up this time when it doesn't happen.

You would think people would rethink those kinds of beliefs when they're never right.

^ They'll probably say, "Oh, we meant the 21st of December 2012 in the Islamic calendar." Even though the Islamic calendar doesn't even have December...

If the world ends for human-induced reasons (nuclear war), it doesn't count as a correct prediction. I wasn't going to bother posting in this thread, but seeing as nuclear war is getting closer, I thought I'd take the time to point out this fact.

However, asteroids, volcanos, tsunamis, the world just plain falling apart, that's nature-induced, so it's only things like that happening that DO count under the mayan proposition.

The Mayans never said anything about anything apocalyptic happening, whether man made or not. The only thing that the ever really implied was that an age was coming to an end and it happen to correspond with the December 21st date. A new age can mean anything, the year 2000 was a new age for us.

So really the Mayan's "prediction" is going to come true regardless. A new age will happen but it'll be more then likely meaningless since a new age could be seen as starting every day, month, year, whatever.

The chances of the world ending, whatever the year is is <1. It's more than likely not going to end, but any predictions are never in certainty.
Just pointing out the obvious. Do I think the world is going to end in 2012? Probably not, but maybe.

Encyclopedia
Earth will most likely not end for a few billion years. Humanity on the other hand...

Humanity will usually be in peace when everyone is rich in resources. When everything goes down hill people grow poor and desperate. Then the bad stuff happens.

Assuming current conditions will maintain, life will suffer when the Sun goes into its last phase, which is 5 billion years from now. It'll emerge into a Red Giant. Then there's the Andromeda Galaxy slowly getting closer to the Milky Way.

Yes there will be a change and the first thing will be the rush to delete paranoia videos and certain internet users trying to convince others they "totally knew it was stupid and was just playing along for lulz".

Bugs me that saying, it's so primitive sounding. A book ends, a film ends...that's really the only useful application of the word, you don't say your cat ends, "oh man my pc got a virus and ended" "2011 was the end of my grandad" whut.
It's not about it being so vague, I just think its a totally incorrect use of the word and reflects the intelligence of the person saying it. I don't fear predictions, people doubt a weatherman's forecast of a week ahead, and sure as hell morons and people that can't read things properly will do no better. I do however fear people that want to make something happen.
And like the typical 'ending', the credits will roll and people disperse with an air of disappointment. The fan kids will move on to another fad, or considering the frequency of 'predictions', latch onto the next sequel!

No it will end on December 31th 2011, when our calender ends.

I have a 16 month calendar this year, so we've got until April. But I don't know what will happen after that, because according to my calendar, days just stop happening! :scared:

What I think when I see people who believe the world will actually end:

I'm not one of those who thinks the world will come to an end,but i do believe something big may happen this year.It could be a big weather event, earthquake,or maybe even a solar flare or some type of solar event.

I found some interesting info that leads me to believe that the solar event may be at the top of what could happen.

SunSpotless days since 2004
2012 total: 0 days (0%)
2011 total: 2 days (<1%)
2010 total: 51 days (14%)
2009 total: 260 days (71%)
Since 2004: 821 days

From what i have posted here you could say the sun is getting very active.Maybe we will witness a big Solar Flare sometime this year?It just could happen.

The 2012 total is not valid... yet. We are just in 12th day of 2012.

So what? What makes you think that these numbers are unusual in any way?

And having NASA and other space administrations been predicting higher then average solar activity in 2012 for years? It's not like a giant solar flare is going to kill us all, the worse that might happen is that your TV might have a lot of static.

Not really. There's a great deal of uncertainty about how intense a future solar cycle will be before the cycle is actually underway. It's only now that solar cycle 24 is underway that decent predictions regarding it can be made. Currently, NASA have solar cycle 24 to peak at a lower intensity of the previous cycle, and that this peak will most likely occur sometime in 2013.
