Do You Use The Emergency Brake?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone here uses the emergency brake (circle) as opposed to the regular brake (square) when entering a turn. I've seen some people say that they "pressed circle at the turn" or something like that, and I was wondering if anyone uses it all the time. I don't; the brakes are just smoother, and I like seeing the brake lights.

I did several searches on this, so if it's already been discussed, please help moderators and please lock the thread (BUT ONLY IF IT'S A TOPIC ALREADY DISCUSSED!). Thanks.

:-)

We were just talking about this recently but I don't remember if it was an official thread or not.

I use the e-brake occasionally. Front-drive cars can benefit from light use during actual races because (if you use it sparingly) you can wind up getting tighter cornering, especially when understeer becomes too prevalent.
But using the e-brake too much can erase any benefits you've made...after awhile it just slows you down. I tend to

1. brake into a corner normally

2. give a dash of e-brake if I have to get things super-tight (and maybe avoid some Ai). I have L2 as my e-brake so this is always convenient.

Like I said this mostly applies to front-drive cars for me; but I've very occasionally used it on other drivetrains.

i have it set up about the same as P.bone, Ill enter a corner, and tap the ebrake a few times to tighten thigns up.

Why is it called emergency brake?

Because when you use it in a race you will wake up in the emergency room.:scared:

That means whenever I use it - even only a little bit- hell br(e)akes loose, I have no practical use for it; even at reallying its way too strong at every surfuce you drive at.

Ha ha. All brakes on cars used to be operated by cables or some other such mechanical devices; nowadays most brake systems are hydraulic, which provide smoother, more consistent braking with less force applied.

But if your hydraulic brakes for some reason fail (extremely rare but it happens) hopefully you've still got your parking brake to save you--which most of them to this day are still cable-operated like they were 100+ years ago. Hence the term "emergency brakes". 💡

I think it's better to swing than e-brake to tighten things up.

example:

in a left corner, use the regular racing line but instead of a regular turn in (which could cause understeer), do a quick right turn and then left to get the car a little sideways. But be careful, too much and you will probably spin.

Um, 💡 it's called drifting.

no no... i was talking about FF cars too, well a little drifting maybe, but more balancing the car so it's ready for the turn before you get there... which is also known as... gah! you win

Emergency brakes are useless and retarded in GT4, I remember holding the E-Brake on a long turn on the Nurburgring on my Lotus Elise, held it for 6 seconds, turning at full lock, and the car still didn't drift! So no, I don't use E-Brake after that occurance. :irked:

hahaha this happened to me in real life a few months ago!!! I was driving home after getting my car serviced and my master brake cylinder seals broke or gave way for some reason and i was left with NO BRAKES!!!! :grumpy:

so that is one time in my life i was gratefull for the e-brake / handbrake!!! as i was heading into a T intersection at 60 kmph!! :scared: hehe i sqealed straight through it!!! scary stuff.

In the game i use it on ice races or special cond tight corners and slam the back of my car into fences to avoid 5 second penalties recieved when you hit them front on!:sly: i reckon its quicker!!

Yeah my brother has a '69 Ford Falcon in real life...all 4 wheels have drum brakes on them. IF he don't get drums cleaned out every couple of years the brake dust accumulates in them and eventually the car's brake distances get longer and longer as the shoes inside those drums start trying to stop a bunch of dust! :scared::nervous: Finally one day he tried to stop and went clear thru an intersection with no brakes! THankfully there was nobody there.

With rear-wheel drive cars, doesn't the e-brake lock up the wheels totally? I tried it on my ruf gtr, and the rpms drop dramatically. I went to give the car gas, and nothing. Almost as if it turns the engine off temporarily. BTW, I don't know what I'm talking about... hehe. It happened one day, and the car completely locked up.

Try putting in an LSD. (2-way or full stay away from 1 and 1.5)

Already done, and I see no difference. I find e-braking very unpracticaly in GT4, I think it's just ridiculous. Being able to take a turn the right way would be much faster than "drifting".

Huh, funny, I have no problem like that in my S14.:indiff:

On all cars - except, in real-life, the Bugatti Veyron, which has ABS on its handbrake (emergency brake, parking brake, whatever).

I kid ye not.

I can't imagine why on earth anyone would want to use the handbrake in this game, it's coded physics are sooooo wrong it's not even funny. 👎

is there any way to adjust the physics coding? like on epsxe? I am actually a handbrake fanatic, when im playing 2P...

I only use the side brake into turns when i feel like testing a cars braking i do both grip and time attack along with jgtc and i use it in the middle of my drift or if i feel like entering a turn real fast, faster than i should so i brake and side brake at the same time.

If GT has the right physics,i would definitely use the handbrake on all the car (especially if there was a steering wheel with a handbrake) but as for now i'm using handbrake just for drifting (mostly FF cars) and use it to turn into sharp corners.....

it's very hard to make a profit using the e-brake

Yes it locks up the rear wheels and also puts the clutch out so your car is now coasting in neutral. To start driving again you hit the gas and the clutch kicks back in again.
