Do you use the Runoff Areas as part of the Track ?

I try not to use the run-off area, but sometimes i end up there by pushing to hard. If I gain a position i'll give my position back.

the runoff area never gives advantages, actually, it slows you down by a fraction of sec because your radius is bigger. The only thing that might not "kill" your lap time is the fact that you are carrying enough speed at the corner exit since you're traveling a straight line at the (what was suppose to be the apex). But I've noticed that if the guy behind you takes the apex just right and accelerate at the corner exit without sliding too much, he'll get in front of you 70% of the time if the gap was around one second

I'll use them if I carry too much speed into a corner. But, as a general rule I try to plan corners using just the track area and not the runoff areas. The one that comes to my mind is at Suzuka. If racers use it they are normally not in good position to negotiate the next two turns so it's sort of self-correcting in that scenario. On other tracks I'm not sure.

I too have noticed that if I bring my apex out to the runoff area and I am within a pack of cars that the ones that kept the apex within the track will pass me up pretty swiftly. I consider it a "save" when I've got 2 on the strips and 2 in the runoff because teh car behind me barely gets a pass and I can usually squeak back in with no significant gain whatsoever.

It does seem strange that in free run mode you do pick up penalities for running wide but in the game it's ok. Fuji has to be the worse for people going wide - turn one should be allowed because of number of cars trying to get thru (would like to see the same run off going into turn one at suzuka - would save alot of swearing)
First and last turn from the front straight at Fuji is the only place l would do it, but only if i'm following someone for there slip.
At the end of the day I do this for enjoyment. I'm not out to spoil anybody elses fun.
"Go hard, be fair"

One of the good things about the Run-off areas is that it makes it possible to avoid punters where by if they were not there( Run-offs) you would be stuck behind the punter. So while I don't use run-offs intentioanlly to gain advantage, they do have merits when dodging punters.:D

The run off area isnt part of the track so I dont use it as such...other wise it would just be called the track and not a run off area.

If I run wide and end up on one and gain a place I'll give it back.. is only fair after all!

Rumble strips/kerbs are an integral part of the race track, and often offer better grip helping you turn the car. Suzuka is a good example of this - especially through turns 3-7.

No

They are not officially part of the racing surface, therefore , I try to avoid them.
The actual racing surface ends at the curb / rumble strips.
I have been put there by other racers, but not by choice.

In response to the main question of the thread title:
Heck no, I always try to attack each corner with the idea that there is a wall or armco at the edge/sides of the track. Run off is just that, run off area. It should never be used to gain or make an advantage on someone.

Fuji, last corner. sometimes I exit too wide but always yield the position if one is gained. However my lap times are always better if I stay on the darn course.:banghead::banghead:

I'll always do my best to avoid using the runoff areas of the track. Sometimes, despite my best efforts, I'll end up there anyway, and I'll continue to press, but if I gain a position as a result, I'll give that position back at the earliest opportunity.

None of the polls options suited, both this ^^^^ is exactly how I feel..

Online YES ON SUZUKA
Offline MAYBE

If I see several other racers in front of me using the area after the first turn in Suzuka and they appear to know what they are doing then I will joint them just so they dont get away.
