Dodge SRT-4: SportCompactCar of the year

but it takes a 2.4 liter and turbo to get 216hp? thats weak... and neon u kinda need to change your avatar seeing as how the neon has fallowed what so many car makers done: added turbo, and a big ugly ass wing (typeR, Eclipse, Evo etc.)

You think its weak ? I bet you havent drivien it. If you cant go fast with 90 HP, 900 wont help. And it has more than 216 HP, around 230 from a test RSW did. They didnt just add a turbo, which you would have known if you had actually researched about the car before putting it down. Goes faster than the Mazda 6 which has more HP and it handles better as well...

2.4 liter? u can get way more power from a 2.4 and with that much u wont need a turbo, the ITR was 1.8..

mazda 6 is a sedan while the neon is a compact
besides the SRT is like there special edition wait till mazda comes out with a special edition...
i dont like neons period.

With the exception of the a few RX7's, most Mazda's wont touch a Neon in the 1/4 mile.
Neons are so easy to make fast and with the advent of the SRT, can have more possibilities than before.
Dont knock the Neon.
Ive been a member of the Neon.org and there are some very fast cars there.
Ive been on the Protoge.net and they dont even come close.
Have some respect for a car that can whip most Mazda's a new trouffle. ;)

It doesn't "take" a 2.4L, Dodge chose a 2.4L. They could have tried something more peaky with the regular 2.0L block, but they wanted that typical, grunty Mopar feel. The turbo was nice, but the extra displacement spools that turbo right quick.

As for someone who can't make turbos work anymore, look at Ford: they can't get the Focus RS to run on anything less than 95-octane (or better if you can get it) and that's only 215HP.

And let me tell you, the 2.4 has decent grunt. When we did the swap in my wife's Neon, it woke *right* up. Horsepower is nice but give me torque for a street car any day.

They are nice cars. Just like some Honda's too many people mistaken it for a 'Econo-car'. Though it is, the Neons are great cars for touring in. Cant wait for Fall 2004 if you catch my drift ;)...

Personally I'm not that crazy about compact cars. I don't like the way they look or drive not to mention you feel like you are wearing a car that's way too small. That said I do kind of like the SRT. I've started looking for a 3rd car again. I need something to drive back and forth to work because the Ram is eating up too much gas. The SRT seems perfect for the job. Cheap, decent gas milage, quick for a little fun on the x-pressway,not totally ugly. I'll have to try one on for size at the dealer.
No offence to Neons but if someone asks I will tell them it's a Dodge.

Hey people, dont forget, this. The Dodge Spirit R/T is an ordinary car, which reaches 60 in 5.9 secs,225 horsepower, nice little car,and my friends daily driver, look on supercars.net for it.It looks ordinary so dont be suprised........

The claimed HP of 215 for the SRT-4 has taken near Mexico City at an elevation of 2,200 meters above sea level. Would it make less horsepower at sea level or more. We bought a Neon SXT and an SRT-4 at the same time and they are the same body. The SRT has added on aero skirts no side molding, different grill, different rear bumper, awsome seats and drive train. The brakes and suspension are better. I want to get another set of SRT-4 seats for my wifes car. If you have a 2000 thru 2003 neon your in luck a lot of srt stuff will work on a none turbo neon.
The latest numbers are 0 to 60 5.34 secs, 1/4 mile 13.74, and 0 to 150 mph in 46.80 seconds. Nissan 350z takes 53.36 to reach 150 mph.

Actually the engine in the SRT4 is different from the Neons so some parts wont work. Since there is less air at high elevations above sea level there is less air, thus less power. If at sea level you would have more power...

I'm still wanting one, even though it's resale value will drop like a rock in the future.

Then again, I had the old '95 Neon for over 7 years...one day, I'll find time to test-drive it.

Generally, turbo boost compensates for any power deficiency; but like you said, it ought to be just as powerful at Sea Level, Florida.

Actually more powerful. Since there is less air the higher you go above sea level, the less air that gets into the engine, which means less power. At sea level you would produce more power because there is more air than you would if you were in the mountains in Colorado...

I'm stoked about the SRT4. If I weren't in college I would definitely be looking into financing one. I really want to at least drive one, anyone know how old/what criteria is needed to test drive one of the these bad mothers? I'm 20 so I don't think i'm too young but I dunno if they would let me drive one if i wasn't serious about buying it. Basically I have no idea as all i've test driven are used cars.

school year which is almost done - amherst, mass
back home - jamestown, ny

the local dealer back home doesn't have an srt in stock, but the one here has a nice shiny red one in the show room that i always look at when i drive by

Welcome aboard, Expresso! Nice to see another Neon owner in the mix.

For a hot, new car like that, they might be looking for a deposit before they'd let you drive it. If it's in the showroom, it may already be sold, anyway.

But then again, the sales droids may be itching for a chance to take it out... never hurts to ask.

Thanks for the info. I'm actually in withdrawl lately over my expresso. When I was driving from my house in ny to college in ma at the end of winter break my transmission blew. Didn't have the cash to get it fixed 'til now. I found a used one for $225 that's getting put in as we speak. Know if this is a good price?

I'm gonna call the dealer here tomorrow and see what's up.

Yeah, $225 is not a bad price for a reasonable-condition used transmission. Manual, or automatic?

If it was manual, did you do a lot of burnouts? That can cause the pin retaining the differential to come out, leading to "transmission grenade syndrome". Hope you get the car back running well soon!

It's a manual. That sounds like what happened. I was just driving along, hadn't had any problems with the transmission at all except for an occasional grind going into reverse, and i heard a large boom from the engine. Felt like I had hit something.

I found this to be strage too. After it happened, I could put the stick into gear without using the clutch and my speedo would go up as i shifted from 1st to 2nd, etc.. It would say 10mph then go up to 15 as I went to 2nd and I wasn't even moving at all. I know this is a SRT thread, but is this normal?

Well, yeah, kind of, at least for a broken trans. The speed sensor is inside the transmission, and it senses the rotating speed of the output shaft, and then the computer calculates how fast that must mean you are going. If the diff had exploded and the transmission was just freewheeling inside, it would think you were going, even if the actual wheels weren't turning.

I've been neglecting my duties over there for a while, but drop in over at www.neons.org . I'm and admin over there, and I wrote the first-generation FAQ. I need to get the 2nd gen FAQ done since the car is going to be out of production in a couple years!

Just finished reading the thread.... Very entertaining!!!

I just drove my SRT-4 off the lot today. Haven't had much time to "play" with it yet, but I'm taking it slow. Bought it as a toy, basically. It was cheap - and ended up costing about the same - if not less - than buying a stock honda, toyota etc... and modifying it...

This little Dodge is fast!!! Even with the AC on!!! :D I guess my perspective is a little foggy right now as I'm moving from a 2000 Jetta VR6 GLX to this.

It's not finished nearly as well as the VR6 - but for the price, you can't complain!!

The most impressive thing about this car - other than its quickness...? Lack of torque steer!! To be honest, I have yet to feel any bias to either side! My VR6 pulls like I have a 500lb gorilla tied to my side view mirror!

The most unimpressive thing I would have to say would be the seats. My hiney was numb when I got back from from the dealership (25mins).

On the whole, It's a blast to drive!! If you have 20g's to spend and you're looking for an exciting jaunt through the city, buy it now!!!

OK, I have to say the argument as to whether this is a Neon or not caught my attention. I'll put it this way... That guy in the Mustang GT who just got Whuppped by a Neon isn't going to tell his friends he had his clock cleaned by a Neon... He's going to say "An SRT-4 killed me the other day..."

That's his problem, not yours. I'd make sure to call it a Neon every chance I get, if I were you.

Congratulations on your new car? What color? Where are you located? Go to the site I mentioned - www.neons.org - where there are a TON of knowledgeable Neon owners. There's an SRT board there among the regular neon forums.

And don't foget about the ram-air customization: check out the top of the air box and how it meets the "brace" in the hood above it. A 5" hole saw and some weatherstripping = instant cold air induction, when you take the "fake" grilles out of the hood scoop. Just be careful not to drill out through the top of the hood.

Good luck and let me know more about the car when you get a chance!

Congrats Man 👍. Glad to know someone else owns one other than me (But my uncle might take it off my hands, too much insurance for me). The reason for the uncomfartable seats is Dodge knew people would want to customize it, which most likely means seats. Why pay for ultra expensive foreign leather, only to get rid of it for something you wanted :D?...

I know it was alot. I cant remember exact numbers though. He might sell it back to me for $1 when I can afford the insurance every month. Then I would have 2 cars :P (when Im older)...
