Does patching Shift make it a Sim?

I thought Shift 2 eliminated the "drift mode" physics? With the exception of some sort of power boost for <500hp cars.

I also agree that Shift 2's sounds are as inconsistent as GT5s. The cars that sound good sound quite good, but the bad ones (GTI) sound terrible.

Urgh. Note: this is my opinion from observations I've made and from time spent with modded Shift 1 and learning from others.
The engine running under Shift 2 is far more advanced than GT5 - suspension is wonderfully modelled, the tyre model is better and actually models tyre geometry. It's how they've adjusted the inputs for the user that is causing the problems. It seems to me they've toned the inputs down to make them smoother (slower?) for the casual user, even on Elite mode. I think this is because they know that even though they said Elite mode is targeted at wheel users, everyone playing regardless of what they're using switches to Elite mode with no assists because that makes them awesome and if they can't control the car in that mode something is wrong with the game. Unfortunately this is a result of what every console racing game allows.
I'd love them to remove the extra filters or whatever it is and allow the engine to fully shine.

Let's hope that is the case, or maybe there just might not be any filters in elite mode then it's just the physics that's odd. All that telemetry may just be for show, I hope not.

My version.

I think the potential of shift 2's engine can at least push it up to 6 with a patch.

What is crazy in all this is that.

iRacing = pure sim... And the game is easy to play, many of the cars (not all) are so natural and easy to drive. I've had friends over who don't play games at all, let alone racing games, they can jump on and get straight into it.

A friend of mine, who probably has not played a computer game in 10 years or so, drove at Lime Rock in an MX5 (very easy car to drive) with a laptime of 1:01 after playing it for a bit. That there is 1 second off the racing pace and around 2 seconds off the lap record.

If i had given him a go of Shift 2 then he would likely have put the car in the wall, because of dodgy physics and horrible controls with input lag.

Many hundreds of hours experience with RBR, rF, GTR2, GT5, LFS, F1 2010 and some experience with others. That's how I would rate them as far as that largely subjective "realistic" feeling.

Shift 2 is ok, but after 3 days messing with controller settings for both G25 and DS3, I have come to the conclusion that something is BROKEN as far as the controller input is concerned... this is on a PS3. The lag on the DS3 is bad, and with all aids off, it still tries to auto-correct for opposite lock on oversteer. That combined with horrible lag make it fun until your car is impossible to recover after extremely mild tank-slapper.

If you get the steering input control linear, (50% sensitivity for G25) it feels muddy and not at all precise around center. If you set controls to be more positive around the center, it's way overdone and touchy closer to mid to full lock. It's a constant trade-off that never feels right overall.

GT5 with a G25 puts S2U w/ a G25 to shame as far as steering feel and control. S2U isn't even in the same ballpark, not yet at least. S2U feels like it has a lot more to offer though, it needs more direct controller input or something. Sometimes you can get it "playable", but there's always a huge compromise somewhere. I'm going to plat GT5 for a while and then come back to S2U to try to get a handle on the input adjustment. I don't have very high hopes though, especially for drift mode physics.. what a joke that is with a G25.

I agree, GT5 is no where near as realistic as Shift 2.

It's refreshing in Shift 2 to actually wreck when you know, wreck, and not just bounce of cars and walls like a pinball.

It's refreshing to have adaptive competition that no matter what car you're driving actually gives you a competitive race.

It's refreshing to have AI that actually knows you're out there rather than making laps like slot cars.

It's refreshing to have a car that actually makes you feel like you're driving fast, rather than just making you feel like you're going to puke because the cockpit shakes.

It's refreshing to have FFB that actually makes it feel like you're losing traction and your car is loose

It's refreshing to have a game that actually sounds like you're driving a car on a race track, with marbles under your car, dirt and rubber and grass coming from the car in front of you, stuff hitting your windshield, and FFB that gives you a different feel from what surface you're driving on.

And it's really refreshing to have your car get damaged when you roll over, crash into cars and walls, and you're engine letting go if you over rev, rather than being indestructible Hot Wheels that bounce like pinballs with no damage off of everything they hit....

I agree 👍
