Well, lower gear ratio for 2 to what ever gear yes, first gear ratio should be a little bit longer so the tires dont spin. On 4wd cars, im nor sure about the springs, but i usually run soft springs and dampers, and ride height is a little bit higher in he back. It works well for me, but i dont know if its the correct way.
yeah... believe it or not actually my gtr has the tallest gear setting on 1st gear, then the 2nd gear is the shortest, and so on in that pattern...
it sounds amateurish, but trust me it took me some time to actually take it up...

1st: as long as possible
2nd: very short
3rd: a bit longer then 2nd
4th: a bit longer then 3rd
5th: halfway between 4th and 6th
6th: adjust to trap speed
