Drift Photo Competition Rules Discussion

In light of how the first one started off, I'm asking that we all put our heads together and set up "Rules of engagement" for the Drift Photo Competition.

Such as an idea for a competition is presented idea to a designated person (predicatably the moderator of this forum, who hasn't been appointed yet) who can accept or reject the photos based upon it fitting the criteria of the competition.

Car/track/corner/combination of these or other criteria.

We set up a specific thread, that the person in charge will set a poll for a given amount of time and we all get to vote. We vote in the thread, not in a poll. That way, anyone can see who voted. The photos should be unmarked as ass not to sway a voter based on the driver.

I'd like to compile these rules and thoughts in an intelligent discussion in this thread. We can all convey, propose and modify the rules so we all have a basis for evaluation.

i agree, the contestants photos should be posted anonymously, this prevents anyone from playing favorites, and we need to keep the the voting thread void of all unneccesary conversation as much as possible. everyone could just post the # of the photo they like.

the only 1 thing i have to comment on is the issue of everyone using the same turn on the track for the photo. Now maybe this isnt the case but it seems like in that situation someone whos voting might vote based on how the drift looks and not much else, because the scenery on most of the pics would be similar. However it could go the other way and contestants would make the effort to have their picture stand out from the rest.

Cars should be limited to classes i think too, but not 1 specific car. Car limitations in GT4 for the various races could be applied to the photo contest.

Just some thoughts.

like i said on the other post, peopole jst need to stick to one car, but i disagree on the only using 1 corner.Its up to you to find the best corner angle of the car, not people who say, 'oo i want ppl to take it at this corner'.

I think the drift pic contest is a great idea. however, the driver should be able to use any corner on the track they want. Limiting it to one corner would stiffen half the creativity of what this competition is about.

A "For instance", GTBN has the longest running "spot races" league. Yes, even longer than the weekly here at GTP. The person in last place specifies and stewards the next race. We could establish similar rules. The last place person publishes a "Spot drift phot competition" and gives a set time, requirements, posts an e-mail for any participants to email their phot to him. He then posts up the images with #'s for the rest of us to vote.

I'm not talking about 35 rules with 13 subsets of each rule. Just a simple formula that can be adhered and applied to nearly any situation. Final decision would be rendered by the steward. Not a moderator, but the person in charge of the Comp.

instead of someone posting their email, contestants could send a PM with a link to their photo. and I like the idea of different people choosing the requirements for each comp., we just have to make sure when they post the guidelines they are made very clear.

I think any picture where you can't determine if the correct track was used should be something to think about. do you let it slide(hah. no pun intended)? do you throw it out?

And try to be honest. Don't pull the e-brake and take the photo showing only the front. The car must be drifting.

I think it's better to choose a track, not only a corner.

One corner limits what this is about - which is dramatic photography. That was what I understood it to be about.

I've made some nice shots where you could not tell what track it is, unless you analizied the tires marks on a corner. Some very dramatic shots would be lost I think if we removed that range of pictures as well.

PMing a final product to the organizer is the best idea I feel, as it would prevent any copying of styles, would be straight forward, and prevent mail box clutter. A poll or voting system... held for a period of time after the submission date would be best as well, with unmarked photos, as to prevent any accusations of a bias based on the artist.

One thing that would also be nice if each person voting explained why they liked a certain picture... preferably with more than "Its a Skyline, its teh hawtness." This would give feedback to the artists and allow for a progression in the quality of photos.

A limitation to cars could be beneficial... as it would keep things from getting too wild and outta hand. For example, me drifting the Nike car when everyone else is using D1GP cars is a bit... special

Well, you don't see all of the same cars at a Drift competition, nor do you see the swimsuit models photographed at the same spot on the beach.

Personally, if you wanted to limit/set rules, I would just narrow down the choices, not force everyone to use the exact same thing. I may be best drifting MR cars on tight corners, whereas someone else may be best at drifting the biggest cars on the long sweeps.

Choose 4 corners on one course to choose from. Then set either a drivetrain limit, or a HP limit if you want to limit the cars. It's really up to whomever is going to do the work setting up the contest. If someone wants AE86 Trueno's drifting the turn after the corkscrew at Laguna, then so be it. The amount of entries is going to dictate how many people are willing to go out and find a Trueno and work on the perfect shot for that specific contest.

Most likely, you'll find more entries in a contest that is more "open" to the public, but there is not reason not to have a variety of contests, and they can be run at the same time or closely together. Just don't run an open contest to close to another open contest to avoid the same shot being used for both. A specific car model contest in conjunction with an open contest will work, you can just exclude the "specific car model from the other contest" from participating.

Okay, you should set up a post titled something like "Drift Photo Competition Tryouts" Everybody who wants to enter can submit they're ONE photo, unmarked and unnamed, just the photo itself. It shouldn't matter the track or the turn because limiting those two things would severly cripple how creative and imaginative you can be. The moderator of the forum pics the top 10-20 pictures. Numbers them off then has a poll on them, the poll should be set up to just give you the number and percent of the votes each picture has. And if possible only allow one vote per IP and account name.

Seems to me like anyone that won the week's previous contest shouldn't be able to compete again now that they can choose where/what. This will make sure persons don't monopolize the competitions.

Yeah, I agree with that. I think they should have to skip one weeks competition. But only the one directly following their win.

2cents: The car should not matter every one has a fav. car and to limit a player to a certain time era or manufacture is kinda lame. The corner should be choosen by the winner of the past weeks compitition and have a time limit to pick with in so the next weeks can get underway or even have it so that the track is picked one week in advances I.E.

week 1: winner John 1 = picks week 3 track
week 2: winner John 2 = picks week 4 track
week 3: winner john 3 = picks week 5 track
week 4: winner John 4 = picks week 6 track
week 5: winner John 5 = picks week 7 track
week 6: winner john 6 = picks week 8 track

Get it... and must name the track and the corner by a certain date after winning...

I am not sure, but possible backgrounds could influence votes I guess... The technicality of each corner is different also. It would just make it more uniform, so that voting would be judged more equally; the concept if I am correct is that the entered photos should be judged on the picture/scenery/lighting/contrast/angle of drift/smoke/and what not. So it would be a fair of a playing ground for the corner to be the same. I don’t think the main idea is the car in these competitions it is more or less the ability to make the picture stand out against the others.

right but all the corners are available to everyone, so its not like there are any advantages anywhere. Contestant A can choose corner 1 and Constestant B can choose corner 2, but you cant say that one has an advantage over the other because they each made their own decision on where to take their picture. plus you can always update to a new picture if the entry thread is open, to try and out-do someone

I definately think we should have track restrictions, and car restrictions are fun too. both of those (sometimes) force you to learn different tracks and drifting types of cars. I think it would be cool to have an MR drivetrain restriction, although we'd probably have 100 MR2s and NSX's?

and regarding d3p0 and Swift's comments....I also considered that, I wasnt sure how well it would go over, and was hoping we could just do it on the "honor system" and the week's current judge would pick photos other than their own.

If anything, having the cars wide open will give an advantage. Almost everyone drifts with the same cars; Silvas, 86's, RX7's, EVO, Skyline, etc. Because of that, if you shoot one of those cars, you are likely shooting someone's favorite car.

Also, another reason why winners shouldn't compete is that they will have control over the 15 selected for voting.

That too.

Maybe we can make a system whereas, we accept the fact that the person choosing the options for that week picked them for a reason. Then they can get some recognition by posting a shot of their own, but that shot should not be judged.

The idea is to judge the photo. I try to look for a photo that is not only a quality photo, but really captures the "feel" of drifting, and is a believeable image depicting drifting. Im not sure how to describe it much better than that.

Unfortunately, we cant judge them like we would a video, because we have no way to determine the technique used to obtain the photo. I know ive had a few photos that turned out quite good due to driver error, crappy technique, etc... but theres no way to judge it with the photo.

I guess you could sum it all up and really just say its a matter of opinion, which is probably a primary reason why i support having a rotating cycle of people choosing limitations and photos. There are always going to be disagreements due to opinion but if we had the same people picking and choosing the photos every week, it may end up seeming a little biased, even if it was some respected board members choosing every week. no offense guys

The Best Picture... if the car is not in a drift it will not look as good as one it a drift you know it is a "whole" thing no percent don't take it so ...umm literal ya know its a picture what ever catches an eye.
