Drifting...the new rice boy phase?

I have been noticing around cities, and through gatherings everyone is talking about drifting now. Vinkento and I had a conversation about this online, and it was very interesting.

Before everyone hated "ricers" , it was pretty much just underground. Then all of a sudden it just blasted through the market. Left and right, there is some kind of exhaust on a stock Civic and even a 1980 datsun ((exaggerating)). People started to get annoyed of driving everyday and hearing that high-pitched tune of a exhaust on a car, which is been drivin' recklessly by some punk kid. Altezza lights were pretty cool at first, until it was blown out of proportion. Everyone now is installing them on pretty much anything that has a engine and wheels. Dragging... cops didn't really crack down on it as before, but now hundreds, thousands kids do it, and thus for makes it more noticeable. My point is that, now that D1 Grand Prix has come to America, everyone wants to become a drifter. For example, a guy on my AIM list had in his profile "JDM Unstoppable Dragger" and had his quarter-mile run times on his profile and what kind of parts he has installed. I talked to him, and i asked him "Do you know what drifting is?". His response, "No i have heard of it though, its gay people are just wasting there time.". Now, this was before D1 GP Qualifying Rounds in Irwindale, and he was going to attend because his friend was going. A day later, i check his profile, and guess what? "Drifting for life! Number one Drifter yo!", was in his profile. This made me really mad. Just because of one day,buy watching, hes a "drifter" now? And im sure there are TONS of people out there doing the same thing. And also, this is very sad, my friends friend calls me up, and he asks me "Dude did you go to D1 ?!?! It was amazing.", "I want to trade in my CRX and get a Hatch-eye Row-Kuh". And yes, thats how he pronounced it. Without thinking i hung up on him even more pissed off. People now, are making "drifting", the new phase of the rice-boy era. Everyone thinks they know drifting now. They don't understand that drifting has been here for YEARS, Just not in the states. They don't even think about the history of it and how it came too, and they dont even know who the "Drift King" is, and dont even respect the history of it and why it was developed. They just want to do it because it makes them look "cool". My question to you, do you think drifting will become the new phase of the rice-boy era?, do you think D1 coming to the US is bad thing for us drifters who have known about this for years and is fueling the drifting craze? This is just my opinion, and i would love to hear all of yours.

The sad thing it probably will be. I just got into drifting and I'm already starting to reasearch the drivers and it's origins. But there will probably rice boys who will give everyone a bad rap. It's just like the import scene today. A LOT of people do rice and there is a small minority that doesn't, and they still get screwed cause all the ricers are wondering where the stickers and the 6 foot tall spoiler is.(bad grammer) Still, those guys keep working on their cars. The thing about drifting is that it isn't about driving in a straight line, if you talk smack and then you can't do anything everyone will know that you are just a ricer boy. Drifting will probably catch on, but it probably won't get as big because it requires actual skill.

ehhh but that is life.... everything big kids do the lil ones will copy... so whatever is oldschool and underground eventual gets mutilated by those too young to handle with care... ie.... clubbing...raving...driving in general... i mean even skating and rock music only became big because a resurgance of big bros and big sises were skating and listening to music... the way of the world is for trends to exists and yes it sucks and yes people get bad raps for what they like to do when its trendy and cops crack down... and yes it sucks... but we gotta deal cuase people will always judge you on what you wear, drive, and do for fun and a living... oh well

Unfortunatly.....yes.....I think its going to be the new phase.....Now I will admit....Im no drifter....and reading this post is making me wanna change my name on here......I aspire to be a drifter someday.....and I will push and push toward my goal...but for now......Im just a lonely 16 year old driving his moms car till I get my own......*sigh*.....I live in a suburb of a pretty big city in North Carolina. There are a few self proclaimed "street racers"...thinking their 95 Civic EX will outrun ANYTHING because it has "Euro" tails on it and an aftermarket exhaust tip they picked up at the local car shop. *sigh again*. Now im not saying Civics arent nice cars. They are. But the sad part is the people driving them. I wont say that I know everything about cars, but I will say that I love cars. And it makes me oh so sad to see these people taking the cars their parents worked so hard to get them, and the engineers worked so hard to build, and turn them into scrap metal driving the hell out of it and taking a corner too fast because they think the cheapest Chrome 16" wheels they got at the Wheel shop could make their car handle like the ones they look at pictures of in the car mags at the grocery store while their parents get the milk and bread and what not. Its sad. Ive seen it happen enough to know that its stupid and these kids dont learn. Im scared to see what going to happen when the kids start trying to drift. I know people now that like to pull up the ebrake in the middle of the road at 40 to see what happens. its gonna be rough. Theres gonna be some pretty pissed off cops. Theyre building a track around here soon. I think by the time i get my car and set it up decent, they will have built it, so I will have a place to learn to drift. Until then....its on GT3. *sigh* I wish I had a Hachi-Roku *cries* I know this is a long post...so I hope someone out there takes the time to read it ^_^...happy posting!

The Same things happening Ova here. NZ had its first official D1 torney this year and now everyones "really into it".I think its good that theres so much interest the more the merrier just think youve got years of accumulated knowledge on the subject of drifting. As for the stupid kids trying to emulate what they see thats always going to happen as it is i like to go watch the street drags theres just about someone every week who crashes or gets caught years ago that was me but not anymore thats just the way things go.

o ****. excuse my language. im hating this already. one thing i hate are fakers. and it seems like there are a lot of them claiming that they can drift or that they know all about it. it sucks for all of the people who are true to drift. as sad as it sounds, the rice boys will definately defile this amazing and enjoyable 'sport'. all the rice boys can go and shove it. im getting pissed off now, so imma take a cool down period. o god......

I think the anime "initial D" played a huge role... like drifting was already pretty big in japan, but when ppl here saw it all they talked about was drifting.. at least around me it was like that. but really they dont know jack about the actual technique etc etc. and one day they're gona die trying to "drift" on the streets.

ive said it in diff threads and i'll say it again

This year and following for drifting = RICE

it will probably stick until somone messes up realy bad and dies and it's in the news.:banghead:. too bad though, cuz drifting would of been fun:(.

and to s13driftspec. we might be ALL hypocrites, so you just put up with it:mischievous:

America's going to do to drifting what it does to everything else... bend it over the kitchen counter and rape it till it's dead. That is.. unless we take a stand and make sure drifting stays where it belongs: In the hearts and souls of the people who honor and respect it's herritage and wish to make drifting better, not themselves.

A revolution's beginning my friends... a revolution that might someday be Japan's biggest mistake for starting. This revolution will change drifting from the beautiful art it is now to a simple parlor trick that matches nothing like it originally was. There's going to be two people in the racing community:
1) The person who will exploit the simple-minded folk of the world to make themselves look cool with a parlor trick that looks like drifting and
2) The drifter at heart who respects what drifting stands for and why it's here today.

How will you stand during this revolution? Will you sit idly by and watch as a past-time is brutally slaughtered and thrown into a hole or will you stand and fight for what you believe? Drifting isn't a game... and the fight for its honor won't be either. Stand tall and true my friends, if you see some jerk-ass driving down the road in an 86 that's iced out... blow out his tires and hunt him down like the ANIMAL HE IS!!!

I wasnt to fussed but youve just stired me up Vinkento.Your right i now know what side i want to stand for. That 86 better watch out cos i know were he lives

I don't know if I would say Drifting will = Rice..they're two different things..
Rice=a style of customization-Huge Spoilers on FWD cars, Altezza tail lights, ridiculous body kits, chrome rims, etc... 'All Show, No GO'.
Drifting=a style of driving that really has nothing to do with the way your car looks and everything to do with the way your car drives (or the way you drive your car)

I will say that I think Drifting is the new "IT" thing on the import scene. Who knows, maybe Fast and the Furious 3 will be about Drifting instead of Drag racing. I think there's going to be a lot of people that are going to try drifting, (and fail) before giving up because it's A) dangerous B) expensive C) Difficult. They'll probably just make their cars look like Drift cars, but never actually drift. :)

But the ordinary people who aren't on the tracks don't understand that. They will look at anything that looks like drifting and say "look at that guy drift." When all he's doing is some cheap trick that you know the americans will develop. Then where will the real drifters be? Maybe it won't work out like that... maybe the real drifters will be able to retain the respect and honor they devoted their entire life to be privaleged to recieve. But will you really take that chance? When push comes to shove... will you be slapped around and told to shut up or will you show the american people what drifting really is and why the fakes don't deserve to call themselves drifters.

What's worse is that, like street racing, someone will be an idiot and try drifting in the streets and someone will be injured or killed. It is inevitable in my mind that it will happen in America.

If they don't know what Drifting is..or can't figure out what is or isn't a drift, then f0ck them.

What "fakes"? How do you "Fake" drift? I don't get your point.

Unless someone stands up to the wannabe's... and teaches them the truth about drifting... Drifting will become an atrosity throughout the world. The lives of many will be destroyed... I'll say it again people... this isn't a game, and whether you like it or not... something's going to happen.

The Americans have a special unique quality to them. They can take any idea and make a cheap workaround that works kind of the same way but is alot easier to accomplish. People who will use this will be known as fakes... or some name someone'll make up. (americans are good at that too oddly enough)

yeah I get the fact that we love taking good ideas and f0cking them up..but I don't see how you could "Fake" drifting. Drag racing is one thing...it doesn't take alot of skill for some kid to race his riced out Civic down the 1/4 mile, but drifting takes tons of skill and I don't see how you could Fake that. Now that we have D1 events in the US, people are seeing what REAL drifting is. So basically in the end you'll have Drifters, non-drifters (maybe even some Drift fans in the bunch), and Ricers.:D

All in due time my friend... if people can clone a sheep, build sky scrapers, develop lazors and make Michael Jackson a pop super star... we can make drifting as easy as we want it.

maybe..but nobody's going to waste their time trying to make drifting easier. The car manufacturers certainly aren't going to build cars that are easier to slide sideways.. hehe they're doing everything they can to keep them going straight. The way I look at it, If there was an easier way..it would've been created by now..in Japan.
There is no real way to make drifting easier and that's why I don't think Ricers will actually get into it. (sure they'll talk about it..but not actually do it):D
