Drifting...the new rice boy phase?

I don't know about everyone else but I feel like the whole thing about cars or "rice rockets" and how people think of them are all hypocritical... now I know I'm not really in a position to say I know about cars or how to drive them either... but a lot of these words are really miss used. I would go to the "races" at night just because I like cars but I'd stay as far away from the road as possible because these guys don't know how to race even if it is a straight line... e.i. an S4 with 4 peeps beating a supra... hmm... Anyways, this whole drifting think will be another trendy thing just like having a suped up civic is... in the end it's just another civic... that's why I never understood nos all the "cheating power" you could throw on your car. It's not about the equipment it should be about you and your ability that's what a lot of peep miss or think they know... I as well recently got into drifting and mostly because of Initial D but drifting is not about showing off that's was D1 is to it's most of it's fans but the drivers that do it on the other hand are professional. All your gonna get out of D1 is that the next teen will go out and try it on the streets like they did with the fast and the furious and 2 fast 2 furious. I'm smart enough to say I don't know what it really is but I'm not gonna do something stupid just to say I think I do... I wanna learn what it really is and the details about it and it's history.

The car manufacturers certainly aren't going to build cars that are easier to slide sideways.. hehe they're doing everything they can to keep them going straight. The way I look at it, If there was an easier way..it would've been created by now..in Japan.
Unlike us Americans, the japanese still know what the word honor means in their herritage.

There is no real way to make drifting easier and that's why I don't think Ricers will actually get into it. (sure they'll talk about it..but not actually do it):D
Don't tell me there's no real way to do anything. Just because it seems hard for you doesn't mean some guy sitting in a garage somewhere won't develop some type of car modification that will make drifting as simple as pressing a button. Back in the day people would say that there isn't a real way to send a man to the moon... and I don't know about you, but I'm not a conspiracy theorist who thinks the government made up the whole moon landing. So don't think for a minute that you can't make a machine do anything you want it to.

wtf does honor have to do with making drifting easier?

yeah, but think about the mechanics of it...what possible modification could you make that would make drifting easy? There are so many variables when drifting..power..suspension..clutch...steering, etc that even if somebody found a way to make one part easier..say a steering assist or something..it'd still be difficult.
I don't think Drifting will ever be popular enough here for American companies to dump lots of R&D money into it.
Oh well..it doesn't matter
:)

Well then when it's all over and if it turns out like you say it will, I'll be glad to hear "I told you so." But if it turns out like the way I believe it will... you're either out of the way or you're in it... and I will enjoy using my second amendment rights.

lets all take a moment to pray for the sport of Drifting..lets all pray that it doesn't turn into some lame version of it's former self.

I just hope the ricers stick to FWD, so they don't buy up all the 240sx's and AE86's and bastardize them. I'm in the market for a 240sx right now (probably s13 hatch, but I'm really tall so I might have to get an s14 for better comfort hehe)and I can see prices are alread starting to go up.
I've yet to see a riced out 240sx in my area (it's all riced civics and eclipses and stuff around here), and I think I'd have to steal it De-Rice it if I did. :D

I honestly hope it doesn't turn out the way I think it will. I would be perfectly happy if I ended up being the paranoid geek as long as drifting remains the wondeful tradition it is.

Nice name ethix... unfortunately that's what this country doesn't have a lot of at the moment, that and other things... Anyways, it's funny you bring up the cars. I absolutely hate Hondas, now before all you guys start sending me hate mail hear me out. When outdoors what do you always see... civics, integras, and wrx (recently)... Lets try not to all jump on the bandwagon all at once... there's more to life than just these cars... yeah yeah... so what you got a body kit and that retarded wing you use as an extra brake (hey I've seen several inverted that way) but come on lets not kid ourselve... in the end what is it... a civic... an integra... a wrx. Get some variety people, there's more than just a stupid honda. I got a used AE92 back in 98 before I even knew about "the races" and "drifting" but even though it's not in the greatest condition anymore and it's not a true 86 I still love it because it's original and different. You won't see a car like it on the road.

I started cracking up when I read this, cause I drive a Honda Accord (and no..I don't think it's fast..it's my grocery getter with nice wheels hehe) and my dad drives a WRX hehe. I agree with you though that there are tons of Civics and Integras and Accords, etc on the road with big body kits and spoilers and NAAWWWS lol, and it's nice to see some different cars out there. That's one of the reasons I love 240sx's and MR2's so much..I hardly ever see any around. I see some s13's every once and a while, but they're never fixed up or anything, and I never see S14's or MR2's (probably just because of the area I live in). :)

same here. i havent seen many silvias, mr2's or any 240s. its all hondas, benz and beamers (i live in a well off area, although i am the poorest in the community by far). no one here really knows anything abut cars. all talk and no show.

i think what he was saying is that "bill"(for sake of a better name) will do a dumb fishtail with a "Hatch-eye Roh-koh" and he will get mad props (ofcorse untill his bodykit falls off because is was not made to be actuly used!)

...oh and i cant wait till some idiot ruins it for the rest of us...

yeah, but the only people that will be giving him props are his moron friends who also don't know wtf drifting is...so I say let them enjoy their ingorance.
as I said before I just hate how the prices of everything Drift related is going to go up now, that's my only real complaint about Drifting going mainstream. I'm no drifter in real life..the only time I've ever drifted is in the snow (not to say I won't try to learn to drift as soon as I buy myself a 240sx though), but some of my favorite cars are recognized as drift cars and now they're getting expensive 'cause all the ricers are buying them up so they can pretend to be Drifters.

I'm not sure what people are like in Rhode island.. but it's easy enough for people to captivate the minds of anyone around here with practically anything. You can always have your own reasons for drifting, but when those reasons result in people who respect drifting's herritage to be shunned and unnappreciated for what they've spent their lives to learn, then thats just wrong.

I'm somewhat worried about drifting becoming the relm of every ricer on the block, but as long as it takes real skill, RWD or AWD, and real tuning to actually drift, I think drifting will stay away from a majority of ricers. Ricers whant something easy and cheap that will amke them look cool, NOS on a stock DX Civic fit's the bill, while learning to actually drift is a challenge, and something that Civic can't do, so mister ricer loses intrest quickly. ;) At least I hopw so. :(

vinkento, you need to chill out on the whole ricer / drifting subject. Instead of bashing on ricers why dont you go and work on your drifting. Drifting is supposed to be fun and enjoyable, not a revolution of some sort as you claim it is...
As anything popular, there will always be pretenders and people detracting to the particular culture/community. Instead of wasting time talking about how the pretenders will ruin it, why dont you focus on the people that are actually contributing something to it. ;)

How to answer that response...
1) I said ricers maybe once in my life... 2 now. I'm not shifting anything on them.
2) Drifting IS supposed to be fun and enjoyable, but there's a possibility the american culture will rape its herritage to no end.
3) I know I can't get rid of everyone who wants to pretend... I don't want to get rid of anyone really, I want to teach the people who won't respect drifting and instead just use it for their own personal gain.
4) My goal is to make sure the people who are contributing get their fair slice of the pie.
And make no mistake... the american people are very good at taking ideas and destroying them for their own use, and that's wrong not in my opinion, it's just plain wrong.

:D Just to show no hard feelings.

actually I have more respect for the Accord than any other honda (excluding the s2000 ands NSX)...I mean sure 99.99% of accords are ricers or just plain old grocery getters....but they are ususally faster than civics....and nothing says "you suck" more than getting beaten by a 4 door family sedan that weighs twice as much as it's opponent....Now I don;t like the accords with spoilers meant for dragsters or "airbags" but Ive seen some pretty sweet sleeper accords with a nice turbo under the hood....I don't know...people think I'm weird because I like them but I just do....see Accords have potential but most aftermarket companys dont realize that so they don't make any parts for them....I have much more respect for someone in a fast car that nobody makes parts for than for a civic that has millions of manufacturers making parts for them....

as for the drifting thing I agree that people will ruin it...It's sad but true....and you know eventually some idiot will try to drift and plow through a house or somethin and give everyone else a bad rep....I know drifting will catch on in the US for sure because all you have to do is look at the magazines....Super Street, Import Tuner, etc. they all are talking abuot drifting...its gona be like the whole JDM fad all over again....hopefully we can figure out a way to stop it....something like DAP (drifters against posers) or some group like that....

hehe well you are going to have to stop me from becoming D1 champ (someday)

yeah I've seen some Accords that are fast, there was a guy on one of the Honda forums I used to check out who had an h22a (prelude motor) turbo powered accord putting down 280hp at the wheels and on the outside it looked completely stock (aside from being lowered a little and having an aftermarket exhaust). The ultimate sleeper.
But most of them are just riced out with big spoilers and stuff. My accord sits on 18" wheels and it's lowered to get rid of the wheel gap, but other than that it's stock. I don't race people with it, it's just my grocery getter hehe.

we didn't go to the moon and i can say why: i don't know the details but i watched a vid on that and there is a radiation belt between us and the moon and scientist say it would take 6 feet of lead around us to protect us and the all they had on the way back was like tin foil and foam. sorry this is a little off topic but i had to get this out :)

btw i am not a fake drifter i would love to but i would only do it on tracks and off-road. and i would like to drift old muscle cars. (i love the camaro) and there is already somebody who does it :). And i don't see why people drag in FWD cars they have the worst starts and usualy have very little HP and why they would even put a wing on them when they need more traction in the front not the back.

I'm generally against engine swaps.....I think you should work with what you have.....I know that the F22B1 found in the 95 accord ex puts out like 160 stock and has vtec (more than enough to beat out any civic except some newer SI models)....I found a turbo kit for it that puts out about 210 Hp at the wheels at 8psi on a stock engine (stock excluding what comes with the turbo kit) and if you fix up the top and bottom end you can pump more boost out...as I said accords have potential you just have to find the right parts and look past all the rice mods available....I dont care if you add rims..thats not ricer..well I'll take that back...it depends on the rims....

I remembered another point I wanted to bring up about my last post... Along with seeing civics and integras all the time, everyone get's all excited about having the newest car but you know what in the end they are all cookie cutter cars that's it there's no history behind them no stories to tell about them no personality to them. For example, a Hachi Roku or even like mustangs they have a heritage and a personality and that's why I don't like cars like the civics and integras. Also, what are they really good for? drag racing? drifting? no...

Nick:banghead:

its only a short time before the drift scene would become totaly comercialized, and the unbecoming copycats would flurish to the stores to gorge in the masses of bull**** parts, magazines, and anything associated with drifting. simply put: an ugly american sport now.

how do we set the example here?
initial d was a great start to introduction to the sport (still not widespread in the states) but what will carry the torch? this has been bothering me
