The reporting on this has been just flat wrong, almost everywhere.

That one was seized under s165, which relates to insurance offences. The specific issue here is that the driver was a UK resident driving it on non-UK plates and non-UK insurance, which is not permitted. A UK resident must have UK insurance to drive a car in the UK, but it can be on non-UK plates (not registered in the UK) for up to six months before it must be registered in the UK.

Additionally, the Cybertruck almost certainly cannot be registered in the UK in its standard form. It definitely won't have a certificate of conformity from the manufacturer, and it would not pass an IVA test for single use.

That would mean you could drive it in the UK as a non-UK resident, on non-UK plates and with non-UK insurance, for short periods (umm... I think three months; I'd need to check) or as a UK resident on non-UK plates and with UK insurance for up to six months, but you can't do what this guy did and you can't import one and drive it about without significant modifications to pass an IVA to be UK-registered.

It's not, as a lot of places said, illegal to drive at all due to "safety concerns".

Musketeers will try to defend it by saying "oh that's the Roman salute he's doing", the thing is that we don't actually know what the Roman salute looked like, if the Roman Empire had an official salute at all. The concept of the "Roman salute" seems to have originated in the 18th Century, but it's primary source of influence is likely 1950s Hollywood; American film directors were drawing parallels between Fascist Italy and the Roman Empire since WW2 was still fresh in everyone's minds. On the other side of the Atlantic it also found use in Asterix comics and cartoons.

Of course the real reason he is doing it is to be a jackass.

Incoming, "Guys, he's clearly using the Hindu symbol of prosperity & good luck."

Edit*
This outlet is reporting Elon edited his gestures on the video he posted to his page.
Elon Musk has edited footage of his speech during Donald Trump's inauguration to remove what appeared to be a Nazi salute.

In a video posted on his X social media platform, the billionaire's gesture, which he repeats twice, is missing from his nearly four-minute speech. The second gesture is captured in the footage, followed by Musk saying "My heart goes out to you" to the crowd.

That was like a seventies movie edit of (insert any movie from the era). Too bad I have sound muted. I'm at my barber listening to the country version of Gin n' Juice.

There is no evidence at all Romans did 'that' salute. Its earliest reference is a 1784 painting so, y'know... fanciful and made up. But it's certainly retained its popularity with SPQR losers who imagine themselves as some sort of cerebral, brooding centurion of which Milhouse very much fits the bill.

Oddly enough, the pledge of allegiance used to be done with a Bellamy salute, which did look pretty similar to the Nazi salute.

Which is the typical defence of the American fascist. It totally wasn't a Nazi salute they were doing.

"The swastika is a symbol of peace. That's why I got this tattoo..." etc. etc.

0% chance that Musk is even aware of that. He just thinks he's an edgy teenager.

Elon's entire personality is basically "teenager on 4Chan/SA in 2007" so there's no doubt in my mind that it was intentional just to get a rise out of people.
