I wonder if that will have any effect on their willingness to continue racing in F1.

The cost to Mercedes is only a small portion of the budget (~£44m), and the team itself actually turns a small profit (about $14m), so it only costs Mercedes/Daimler about £30m for the coverage it gives the brand... I think the value of that coverage is several billion dollars.

I'm curious as to where you've gotten those numbers, as I've read that the entire group requires hundreds of millions.

...oh VW's turn again to get fined.

In terms of scandals this seems pretty tame - colluding to make diesel cars dirtier, but still within the requirements. And Daimler was the rat.
